SDSC announces international chemistry collaboration

Posted: Published on January 26th, 2015

The San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) at the University of California, San Diego is a partner in a new international collaboration to develop computational models and software for simulations of bifunctional catalysis, which is of high relevance for biomass conversion to liquid fuels and raw materials used in the chemical industry. The research is co-funded by a three-year award from the National Science Foundation's Divisions of Chemistry (CHE) and Advanced Cyberinfrastructure (ACI), and the French National Research Agency (ANR), with the combined award valued at almost $815,000 (EUR 706,000.) Three institutions are involved in the collaboration: SDSC and the University of Delaware in the U.S., and the cole Normale Suprieure de Lyon in France, bringing together research teams with complementary expertise. "Detailed computer simulations can play a key role in understanding how these catalysts function at a molecular level and guide the development of improved catalysts for industrially viable processes in biorefineries," said principal investigator Andreas Goetz, an SDSC researcher with expertise in molecular dynamics simulations and multiscale quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) algorithms. "These simulations are computationally very demanding, and SDSC's new Comet supercomputer, with its advanced Intel Haswell CPUs and NVIDIA Kepler GPUs, will be an extremely valuable resource … Continue reading

Chairs – an organic chem game

Posted: Published on January 26th, 2015

Chairs! helps make mastering organic chemistry fun.You don't need to memorize terms and formulas. Our organic chemistry puzzles help you think visually and learn through spatial reasoning -- key for mastering organic chemistry.Chair conformations, called ring flips, offer great exercises in spatial reasoning, which is key for mastering organic chemistry. Yet hand drawing these cyclohexane chair forms can be tricky. We created this game to prove organic chemistry can be visual, tactile and, yes, entertaining. This visual pattern puzzle game provides a fun and fast method for mastering chair (or cyclohexane) ring flips. Chairs! takes the mystery out of ring flips by offering instant feedback. During game play, as levels increase, so to does the complexity of these organic chemistry puzzles against the clock. There's no need to understand organic chemistry to play. With over 13 challenging levels, Chairs! will help you master this tough concept with ease.Content rating: Low Maturity Read the original post: Chairs - an organic chem game … Continue reading

Cell Thawing: Are You Risking GMP Compliance With The Water Bath Method?

Posted: Published on January 26th, 2015

By Trisha Gladd, editor, Pharmaceutical Online and BioProcess Online Follow Me On Twitter @pharmaonline and @bioprocessol As we move into 2015, cell therapy as a viable and profitable market is becoming more of a reality, especially with the increased focus on unmet indications offering the potential for small companies to find their niche in the industry. However, one of the challenges with working with cells, at both the research and clinical level, is the issue of variability that can occur during the thawing of cryopreserved cells. The most common thawing method today is the use of a water bath; however, this method can lead to issues with viability, contamination, and inconsistent results. Because of the sensitivity of the cell samples, it is nearly impossible to completely eliminate variability; however, with standardized handling practices, it can be lowered enough that it will not have an impact on the efficacy of a cell-based therapy. The Risks Of The Water Bath Dr. Karim Lee has been working in the Transplantation Research Lab at the Universityof California, San Francisco since 2008 studying the application of regulatory T cells in order to establish long-term acceptance of transplanted organs. Conventionally, we have used the water bath-based … Continue reading

FDA taps Duke expert in cardiology, research for deputy commissioner position

Posted: Published on January 26th, 2015

WASHINGTON The Food and Drug Administration has named a prominent Duke University cardiologist to its No. 2 leadership position, tasked with overseeing drugs, medical devices and tobacco products. Dr. Robert Califf currently serves as a vice chancellor at Duke where his work has focused on best practices for clinical trials, particularly those studying heart drugs. In 2006, Califf helped oversee a partnership between Duke and the FDA to develop new tools for spotting dangerous cardiovascular side effects of drugs and devices. He has also served as an outside adviser to the FDA. In 2007, he was part of a committee that concluded the agency was at risk of failing in its public health mission due to inadequate staffing and funding. Califf will begin work as deputy commissioner in late February. Go here to read the rest: FDA taps Duke expert in cardiology, research for deputy commissioner position … Continue reading

Study shows risk for younger adults with isolated systolic hypertension

The risk was higher for women. High systolic blood pressure with normal or near normal diastolic blood pressure (the bottom number) is known as isolated systolic hypertension. "Until now, physicians have not considered isolated systolic hypertension to be bad, but this study shows higher risk," said the study's lead author Yuichiro Yano, MD, of the Department of Preventive Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. "By identifying risks in younger populations, they can be made aware of the need to maintain cardiovascular health as they age." Researchers followed nearly 30,000 young and middle-aged adults for more than 30 years. Isolated systolic blood pressure is defined as a systolic blood pressure 140 mm … Continue reading
