How an ultra-Orthodox Jewish man became a transgender activist

Posted: Published on January 25th, 2015

To the world, he was Jeffrey Smith, an ultra-Orthodox Jew and spiritual leader teaching the Torah to hundreds of students in Jerusalems Hasidic community. But inside, Smith was keeping a secret. Since I was 5 years old, I really thought I was a girl, Smith, 63, told The Post in an interview last week from Israel, where she has been living for the past two years as an Orthodox Jewish woman following sex-reassignment surgery. As a boy growing up in Patchogue, LI, Smith knew early on that something was amiss. But there was no Internet to tell her what being transgender was all about. Whatever it was, Smith instinctively knew to keep quiet about it. How does a 5-year-old in 1956 tell his mother hes really a girl? she said. At Patchogue HS on Long Island, Smith dated women, but relationships were short-lived. I loved being with them, going to movies, but I always felt like I had to do more and it didnt feel right, she said. Smith later attended George Washington University and, while pursuing a masters degree at the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1974, embraced the Chabad-Lubavitch branch of Judaism. I was drawn to the part about … Continue reading

Sheldon High School senior Ryan Fong is doing his part to help advance the field of stem cell biology. The research project hes been working on for the past few years entitled, Utility of Induced Pluripotent Stem Cell Derived Endothelial Cells as Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension Models, was selected from more than 1,800 entrants to place him in a semi-finalist slot in the 2015 Intel Science Talent Search. Fong was one of only three semifinalists and the only one from Elk Grove - selected from Sacramento County for the national search. He, along with Sheldon High will receive a $1,000 award each for the respected selection. I was really excited and not expecting it. I was extremely humbled, Fong said. Ive worked on this project for a while. But this whole thing doesnt just affect me - it affects the entire community, thebiology academy at Sheldon, and everyone whos helped me along the way. I also hope that it will all inspire future Sheldon students. The Intel Science Talent Search recognizes talented young scientists who are creating the technologies and solutions that will positively impact peoples lives. Projects submitted to the search cover all disciplines of science, including engineering, mathematics, biochemistry, … Continue reading

ACL Injuries in Dogs and Stem Cell Regenerative Therapy

Posted: Published on January 25th, 2015

The suggested solution, a TPLO to repair her lame leg, with a prognosis for a second surgery on the right knee in six months time, was quite a blow. This would add up to two invasive surgeries and a total of one year of recovery. On a quest to find an alternative, we looked into all other options. (See Talk To Me About ACL Injuries). During our research we came across information about stem cell regenerative therapy for dogs. We found that stem cell regenerative therapy has been used to treat tendon, ligament, and joint injuries in horses, and that it is available for dogs also. We decided to pursue this. Unfortunately, a couple days before our stem cell treatment consultation, Jasmine's ACL tore completely, and a non-surgical solution was no longer an option. Our final decision was an extracapsular repair for the torn ACL, combined with the stem cell therapy to assist the post-op recovery, and to see if it can save the right knee. The healing effect on the operated leg turned out remarkable. The right leg was also looking good, and three months after surgery Jasmine had a bounce back in her step. And then the ligament … Continue reading

Tool-making may have made language genes more useful

Posted: Published on January 25th, 2015

Oldowan choppers dating to 1.7 million years ago, from Melka Kunture, Ethiopia. Its widely understood that human genetics can influence culture, but increasingly, the idea that culture can also affect genetics is gaining ground. The theory of gene-culture coevolution suggests that the cultural practices we adopt change the costs and benefits of having certain genes, explains Catharine Cross, a researcher at the University of St Andrews. A gene that is advantageous under one cultural practice is not necessarily advantageous under another. For example, yam cultivation in West Africa led to deforestation and an increase in standing water, which creates a breeding ground for mosquitoes and malaria. This meant that yam farmers with a particular genetic resistance to malaria were more likely to survive than farmers with susceptibility to malaria. Yam farmers in the region have been found to have a higher incidence of this genetic trait than nearby groupseven speakers of the same languagewho farm other crops. A recent study published in Nature Communications has suggested that stone tool-making practices among the ancestors of modern humans may have put evolutionary pressure on individuals who werent very good at communicating, helping to select for the genes that would become involved in … Continue reading
