Massachusetts mom raises funds for potentially life-saving stem cell transplant

Posted: Published on January 24th, 2015

Published January 23, 2015 Scleroderma makes it hard for Brianna Garcia to move or even breathe.(MyFoxBoston.com) Friends and family are rallying around a Massachusetts mother in need of a life-saving stem cell transplant as she battles a rare autoimmune disease. Brianna Garcia is suffering from Scleroderma, which makes it hard for her move or even breathe, MyFoxBoston.com reported. Scleroderma is a chronic connective tissue disease classified as one of the autoimmune rheumatic diseases, and it has no known cure. Depending on the patient, symptoms of the disease can be very mild or life threatening. The Scleroderma Foundation estimates that 300,000 Americans suffer from the disease. Dr. Ann Kiessling of the Bedford Stem Cell Research Foundation said a stem cell transplant can help save Garcia. Her immune system is stimulating an excess of collagen that she has. If you can reset the immune system, you can stop that process, Kiessling told My Fox Boston. This woman is very young, and she seems to have really severe systemic Scleroderma, Kiessling said. Garcia, mom to 5-year-old Gracelyn, turned to Facebook for help after her insurance company allegedly refused to cover the $150,000 stem cell procedure. I will not let an insurance company decide … Continue reading

TiGenix gets European patent relating to adipose-derived stem cell composition

Posted: Published on January 24th, 2015

Published 23 January 2015 TiGenix, an advanced biopharmaceutical company focused on developing and commercialising novel therapeutics from its proprietary platform of allogeneic expanded adipose-derived stem cells in inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, announced that the European Patent Office (EPO) has issued European Patent EP2292736 relating to an adipose-derived stem cell composition. The patent is entitled " Identification and isolation of multipotent cells from non-osteochondral mesenchymal tissue ". The claims of the granted patent cover both a specified population of expanded adipose-derived multipotent cells and their therapeutic uses, as well as pharmaceutical compositions of such cells. TiGenix is developing injectable products from its proprietary platform of allogeneic expanded adipose-derived stem cells (eASCs) for inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. Cx601 is a solution of allogeneic eASCs for local injection currently in Phase III of clinical development for the treatment of complex perianal fistulas in patients with Crohn's disease. Clinical results from the on-going European Phase III trial are expected in the third quarter of 2015, and, if positive, may allow the company to file for Marketing Authorisation in Europe. Cx611 is an intravenously-administered product of allogeneic eASCs, which TiGenix is currently developing for patients with early rheumatoid arthritis and for patients with severe sepsis. … Continue reading

Naples, Florida (PRWEB) January 23, 2015 The Miami Stem Cell Treatment Center announces a series of free public seminars on the use of adult stem cells for various degenerative and inflammatory conditions. They will be provided by Dr. Thomas A. Gionis, Surgeon-in-Chief and Dr. Nia Smyrniotis, Medical Director and Surgeon. The first seminar will be held on Sunday, January 25, 2015, at 11:00am, 1:00pm and 3:00pm at the Hilton Naples, 5111 Tamiami Trail North, Naples, FL 34103. Please RSVP at (561) 331-2999. ADSCs are taken from the patients own adipose (fat) tissue (found within a cellular mixture called stromal vascular fraction (SVF)). ADSCs are exceptionally abundant in adipose tissue. The adipose tissue is obtained from the patient during a 15 minute mini-liposuction performed under local anesthesia in the doctors office. SVF is a … Continue reading

Bourn Hall clinic in Cambridge celebrates 2,000 babies born following NHS-funded treatment

Posted: Published on January 23rd, 2015

Comments(1) Baby Rocco is just one of the miracle stories being celebrated by a Cambridge fertility clinic, which has just announced more than 2,000 babies have been born following NHS-funded fertility treatment. Bourn Hall, which has clinics in Cambridge, Colchester and Norwich and has opened supportive satellite clinics in Peterborough and Wickford along with facilities in NHS hospitals in King's Lynn and Luton, was first awarded the East of England contract in 2009 along with four other providers. NHS funding has given couples such as Harika and Craig Marlow the chance of a family. The couple, who live in Cambridge, had been trying to conceive for 10 years before they were referred to Bourn Hall for IVF treatment. "We started avoiding certain social situations to make it easier, like children's birthday parties," said Harika. "People were always asking why we hadn't had children yet. We found the easiest thing to do was be honest and we were never embarrassed, but then the person you were talking to would get so embarrassed you'd almost find yourself apologising for having fertility problems." The couple were successful on their first cycle of IVF and baby Rocco was born on March 11 last year. … Continue reading

New ‘systems genetics’ study identifies possible target for epilepsy treatment

Posted: Published on January 23rd, 2015

A single gene that coordinates a network of about 400 genes involved in epilepsy could be a target for new treatments, according to research. Epilepsy is a common and serious disease that affects around 50 million people worldwide. The mortality rate among people with epilepsy is two to three times higher than the general population. It is known that epilepsy has a strong genetic component, but the risk is related to multiple factors that are 'spread' over hundreds of genes. Identifying how these genes are co-ordinated in the brain is important in the search for new anti-epilepsy medications. This requires approaches that can analyse how multiple genes work in concert to cause disease. Instead of studying individual genes, which has been the usual approach in epilepsy to date, researchers from Imperial College London developed novel computational and genetics techniques to systematically analyse the activity of genes in epilepsy. Published in Nature Communications, the study is the first to apply this 'systems genetics' approach to epilepsy. The researchers studied samples of brain tissue removed from patients during neurosurgery for their epilepsy. Starting from these samples, they identified a gene network that was highly active in the brain of these patients, and … Continue reading
