January 23, 2015, 12:26 PM Last updated: Friday, January 23, 2015, 12:31 PM REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (AP) DNA evidence linked an Oregon prisoner to at least two of the six serial killings of young women that terrified the San Francisco Bay Area and a city in Nevada four decades ago, investigators say. He is suspected of the other slayings. ap photo Rodney Halbower, 66 The San Mateo district attorney's office charged Rodney Halbower, 66, on Thursday with two counts of murder during the course of rape for the deaths of Paula Baxter, 17, and Veronica Anne Cascio, 18. Their deaths were among six police say are connected and occurred between January and April 1976 in California and Nevada. Five of the bodies were found in the suburbs immediately south of San Francisco, including one near Gypsy Hill Road, giving the killings their nickname. A sixth body was found in Reno. DNA evidence linking Halbower to both killings was found on Baxter and Cascio, San Mateo Chief Deputy District Attorney Karen Guidotti said. Dung DNA Gives Clues to the Shy Okapi’s Lifestyle

Posted: Published on January 23rd, 2015

Try to read up on the okapi and you wont find much. This African mammal is most often seen next tothe adjective elusive. But even if we cant find any okapi, we can learn about their lifestyle through their DNAand we can find theirDNA in their feces. The okapi is an ungulate, like a cow. Or really like a giraffe, its closest relative. It has an elegant face, a long bluish tongue, and a zebra-striped rear end. It lives in the denserainforest of the Democratic Republic of Congo, chewing tree leaves in privacy. No one in the Western world knew the animalexisted until the 20th century. One of the great things about studying okapi was that there was so little known about them in advance, says David Stanton, a PhD student at Cardiff University in the United Kingdom. So in this sense, everything that we found out was a surprise. Stanton and his coauthors just published an investigation of okapi society. Rather than search for actual wild okapi (elusive, remember?), they scoured the Reserve de Faune a Okapis, a national park in the DRC, for dung. The researchers gathered 208 fecal samples. They were able to extract and sequence DNA … Continue reading

Miguel Harth Bedoya and L.A. Phil have special chemistry

Posted: Published on January 23rd, 2015

Scientists have made a considerable effort to identify the characteristics of 103 elements, from hydrogen to lawrencium, and explain the complexities of their interactions. But better living through chemistry only goes so far. The chemistry underlying an orchestra of 103 musicians remains a mystery. What makes a conductor and/or soloist jibe with a certain orchestra and/or audience goes far beyond our 21st century analytic powers. On Thursday night, Miguel Harth-Bedoya returned to conduct the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall. The young Peruvian conductor clicked immediately with the orchestra when Esa-Pekka Salonen appointed him assistant conductor in 1998 and promoted him to associate the next year. In 2000, Harth-Bedoya became music director of the Fort Worth Symphony. Clearly he clicked in Texas too; he is still leading the orchestra. Harth-Bedoya is hardly the same conductor he was when he first led a colorful performance of a suite from Prokofiev's ballet, "Cinderella," with the L.A. Phil in 2001. He returned to that suite Thursday for a program that repeats Friday and Saturday. This time the score was more vivid, more urgent and more commanding. The musical effect might be likened to the difference between watching a VHS tape of … Continue reading

Underground Carbon Dioxide Storage Process Faces Clogs, MIT Says

Posted: Published on January 23rd, 2015

Basic chemistry is generating questions about the effectiveness of storing carbon dioxide underground. The practice involves pumping the greenhouse gas into underground salt caverns, where its supposed to solidify. According to researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, much of the carbon dioxide will remain in its gaseous state, and may eventually escape into the atmosphere. The U.S. Environmental Protection agency has estimated that carbon capture and storage technology may eliminate as much as 90 percent of the carbon emissions from coal-fired power plants. The findings suggest that the technique may be less effective than thought at curbing climate change. If it turns into rock, its stable and will remain there permanently, Yossi Cohen, a postdoctoral researcher at MIT, said in an e-mailed statement Wednesday. If it stays in its gaseous or liquid phase, it remains mobile and it can possibly return back to the atmosphere. The basic idea is that the gas is injected into caverns about 7,000 feet (2.1 kilometers) underground where it reacts with salt water and turns into a solid. According to results published this week in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society A, the gas may solidify only at the surface of the underground … Continue reading

Unlikely chemistry benefits both Obama and Modi

Posted: Published on January 23rd, 2015

Ever since Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited U.S. President Barack Obama in September 2014, the word in New Delhi has been that the two men had chemistry. Mr. Obama broke the ice by leaving his White House staff behind to give Mr. Modi a personal 15-minute tour of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. Soon after, Mr. Modi decided to invite Mr. Obama to Republic Day celebrations this month, becoming the first Indian leader to choose an American as his guest for the spectacular annual parade. It is hard to say who was more taken aback: the Americans Mr. Obamas attendance required him to juggle the timing of the State of the Union address or the Indians, when Mr. Obama said yes. He is scheduled to arrive in New Delhi on Sunday. The emerging goodwill between the two leaders was not preordained. Mr. Modi came into office with a formidable piece of baggage, having been blacklisted by the U.S. government for nearly a decade over his handling of religious riots in Gujarat. U.S. diplomats efforts to mend fences were late and awkward. Beneath the surface of the two leaders personal relationship are the shifting tectonic plates of geopolitics. With the … Continue reading
