Oxford University Press publishes first issue of EHJCVP

Posted: Published on January 23rd, 2015

Oxford University Press (OUP) is delighted to announce the publication of the first issue of European Heart Journal - Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy (EHJCVP), which it is publishing on behalf of the European Society for Cardiology (ESC) and the Working Group on Cardiovascular Pharmacotherapy. Pharmacotherapy is an increasingly important area of cardiology given the high number of cardiac patients who are on medication of some kind. This new journal aims to publish the highest quality research, interpreting and integrating new scientific developments within the field of cardiovascular pharmacotherapy. The overarching goal of the journal is to improve the care of patients with cardiovascular disease with a specific focus on cardiovascular pharmacotherapy. Professor Fausto Pinto, President of the ESC said: "The ESC is very proud to launch this new journal that will address a gap in cardiovascular publications today. Updated information on new treatment strategies is essential for today's practices and better patient management. I am certain that this new member of the ESC journal family will be very useful and well received by the cardiovascular community." Helen Leipman, Senior Publisher at OUP said: "Oxford University Press is very proud to be involved in this new initiative of the ESC as publisher of … Continue reading

FASEB Science Research Conference: ‘Glucose Transport: Gateway for Metabolic Systems Biology’

Posted: Published on January 23rd, 2015

Bethesda, MD - Ann Louise Olson and Chris Newgard are pleased to be co-chairing the next Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) conference on "Glucose Transport: Gateway to Metabolic Systems Biology" to be held in Big Sky, Montana from July 26-July 30, 2015. This is one of the longest-running FASEB Science Research Conferences in the history of the FASEB series, originally launched in the early 1990s in recognition of the cloning and characterization of a subset of the major glucose transporter isoforms. Over the ensuing years, the meeting has continued to feature important advances in glucose transporter biology, but has also evolved to embrace emergent topics in metabolic control mechanisms as they relate to chronic diseases and conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. The meeting has consistently attracted major leaders in these fields, but also with representation of emergent young scientists. This year's program, as seen in the accompanying attachment, is no exception. Recent progress in this area of research has been explosive, and we believe that this meeting will be particularly timely in helping to fully appreciate the significance of recent developments. This year's conference will provide a lively mix of glucose transporter biology, metabolic … Continue reading

After Tragedy, Fellow Biology Students Step In to Finish Friend’s Research

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise Four names were in the author spot of a Texas Tech University study presented at a biology conference in Sacramento in August. Senior biology student Tailor Browns name was at the top; she did most of the field research, which examined how oak tree resprouts respond to drought conditions. Joshua Willms, who is now a joint MD/Ph.D. student at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, is second; he helped coordinate all the research. Associate biology professor Dylan Schwilk, whose name is fourth, guided the undergraduate researchers. Christopher Rodriguez is third. The project was his brainchild. He learned how to use the equipment and wrote a research proposal. He told his friends about this exciting new research hed started, and he made plants and droughts sound exciting. Just a few months into the research, on Oct. 3, 2012, he suffered life-threatening injuries in a motorcycle accident. He died three days later. After Rodriguezs death, a few of his friends approached Schwilk and said theyd like to continue Rodriguezs research. It would be their friends legacy. Schwilk allowed himself to be persuaded. Its not a story of the work almost being done and … Continue reading

Promising drug candidate protects against radiation exposure from nuclear fallout

Posted: Published on January 23rd, 2015

The 2011 Fukushima disaster was a stark reminder of the continuing dangers posed by nuclear fallout, highlighting the need for an approved drug that can be taken after radiation exposure to protect against organ injury and death. A study published by Cell Press on January 22nd in Chemistry & Biology identifies a drug candidate called DBIBB that increases the survival of mice suffering from radiation syndrome, even when treatment started three days after radiation exposure. The findings suggest that DBIBB shows promise for becoming the first drug capable of treating acute radiation syndrome caused by the high levels of radiation released by nuclear explosions. "The 21st Century has presented humankind with unforeseen challenges, including the possibility of radiation terrorism," said senior study author Gbor Tigyi, a professor of physiology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC). "We hope that the scientific community and our efforts will provide protection through medical countermeasures against the harmful effects of ionizing radiation and also help humans to benefit from the useful effects of nuclear technology." Nuclear explosions can expose humans to high levels of ionizing radiation, which can cause cell death and organ injury due to DNA damage. Although some agents tested … Continue reading
