Family voices and stories speed coma recovery

A new Northwestern Medicine and Hines VA Hospital study shows the voices of loved ones telling the patient familiar stories stored in his long-term memory can help awaken the unconscious brain and speed recovery from the coma. Coma patients who heard familiar stories repeated by family members four times a day for six weeks, via recordings played over headphones, recovered consciousness significantly faster and had an improved recovery compared to patients who did not hear the stories, reports the study. The paper was published in the journal Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair January 22. "We believe hearing those stories in parents' and siblings' voices exercises the circuits in the brain responsible for long-term memories," said lead author Theresa Pape. "That stimulation helped trigger the first glimmer of awareness." As a result, the coma patients can wake more easily, become more aware of their environment … Continue reading

Research Discovery Could Affect Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries Treatment

Posted: Published on January 22nd, 2015

Researchers at the University of Virginia have learned that what happens to the body after sustaining a major spinal injury could actually help doctors treat some serious medical conditions. Researchers have singled out an immune system response that happens after someone sustains an injury to their central nervous system previously thought to be harmful. Doctors say the reaction could not only help them treat brain and spinal injuries but also treat conditions like ALS, Multiple Sclerosis, and Alzheimer's. "Because these diseases are chronic and the patients have them live really their whole life with the disability they get, if we can restore this function - really from the very beginning of the injury - then we can have a large impact on their quality of life, said one of the researchers, UVA medical student Jamie Walsh. This discovery is the result of collaboration between researchers in the U.S. and Germany and at UVA's Center for Brain Immunology. Major Discovery on Spinal Injury Reveals Unknown Immune Response: Finding Points to New Treatments for Trauma, Neurodegenerative Diseases CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Jan. 21, 2015 In a discovery that could dramatically affect the treatment of brain and spinal cord injuries, researchers have identified a previously … Continue reading

Researchers Reduce MS Disability With Stem Cells

Posted: Published on January 22nd, 2015

Scientists are hesitant to call it a cure, but they have succeeded in significantly reducing -- and in some cases, reversing -- disability caused by the crippling disorder multiple sclerosis. The therapy involves using the patients own stem cells in a single treatment. The stem cells are collected from the patients blood and they are used to reset the immune system, so the body's fighter cells no longer mistake the patients own nervous system tissue for an invader. Those attacks cause disability and autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis. MS is a degenerative disease. Ten years after being diagnosed, half of all MS patients are unable to work, and after 25 years with the disease, half lose the ability to walk. Richard Burt, chief of the Division of Immunotherapy at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, led a study of 150 MS patients, most with the mildest form of the disease called relapsing-remitting MS, in which they received the stem-cell therapy. He said their disability seemed to reverse itself or disappear. This is a one-time treatment and then you are done. And so we hope patients never need to be treated again, said Burt. About half of the patients tested two years … Continue reading

100th MS patient signed up for Kannapolis based MURDOCK study

Posted: Published on January 22nd, 2015

KANNAPOLIS, NC (WBTV) - A Raleigh medical practice has enrolled its 100thpatient into a Duke University health research project working to end multiple sclerosis, according to a press release provided to WBTV. Raleigh Neurology Associates recently reached the 100-patient milestone for the MURDOCK Multiple Sclerosis Study, a long-term health research project based at the North Carolina Research Campus in Kannapolis, N.C. Raleigh Neurology partnered with Duke in July 2014 to help recruit 1,000 people with multiple sclerosis and 100 people with Primary Progressive MS. Simon Gregory, PhD, is principal investigator for the MURDOCK Multiple Sclerosis Study and associate professor at the Duke Molecular Physiology Institute at Duke University School of Medicine. He and his team are working to identify the genetic underpinnings of complex diseases like MS and understand disease development and progression at the molecular level. While Duke recruits MS patients at several locations in North Carolina, Raleigh Neurology is theonly independent enrollment site for the MURDOCK Study and enrolls between six and eight patients per week. It has been a wonderful partnership to work with Raleigh Neurology. They have not only helped us spread the word about the important MS research we are doing with Duke, but they … Continue reading

Couple follow their hearts in epic journey of love

Posted: Published on January 22nd, 2015

There are many ways to express love, but Ding Yizhou chose one that few would adopt: following a heart-shaped itinerary around China with his girlfriend, who uses a wheelchair. Ding, 27, embarked on his trek from his hometown of Liuzhou, in the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, on Jan 3. He estimated the trip would take three years to complete. The journey resulted from a wish by Ding's girlfriend, Lai Ming. She was diagnosed with hereditary spinocerebellar ataxia when she was 21. The progressive, degenerative disease has left 28-year-old Lai unable to walk. Ding, a primary school classmate of Lai's, found out last year that her condition had deteriorated. He contacted her after noticing that she had signed off on a QQ instant-messaging post by saying, "How will my friends be if I die someday?" Out of compassion, Ding came to take care of Lai. The two gradually fell in love. To help with the treatment of Lai's disease, Ding spent all of his savings. He even bought lottery tickets in the hope of winning a fortune to cover the expenses. Despite his efforts, Lia's situation didn't improve. Lai once told Ding that she would rather go out and use a … Continue reading

New study finds 8 genetic 'errors' that cause aging of brain

Posted: Published on January 22nd, 2015

NEW DELHI: A global team of about 300 scientists studied over 30,000 brain scans of people from 33 countries and found that eight common genetic mutations are behind the aging of brain. This was the largest collaborative study of the brain to date and its findings could lead to targeted therapies and interventions for Alzheimer's disease, autism and other neurological conditions. The study known as the Enhancing Neuro Imaging Genetics through Meta Analysis (ENIGMA) Network was led by researchers from the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California (USC) and involved 190 institutions. The findings are published on Jan 21 in Nature. This is the first high-profile study since the National Institutes of Health (NIH) of the US launched its Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) centers of excellence in 2014. "ENIGMA's scientists screen brain scans and genomes worldwide for factors that help or harm the brainthis crowd-sourcing and sheer wealth of data gives us the power to crack the brain's genetic code," said Paul Thompson, professor at Keck School of Medicine and principal investigator of ENIGMA. "Our global team discovered eight genes that may erode or boost brain tissue in people worldwide. Any change in those genes … Continue reading
