Shonda Rhimes' 'Grey's Anatomy' warning: 'we might not see Derek for a while'

Posted: Published on January 21st, 2015

Derek really is leaving Grey Sloan Memorial. As we saw in the Greys Anatomy winter finale, Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) firmly encouraged Derek (Patrick Dempsey) to finally take that position in Washington D.C. after spending months resenting her for not taking it in the first place. We end them in a fairly dark place, executive producer Shonda Rhimes tells EW. Hes walking away and shes sort of pushed him out the door. Its like, you call someones bluff and push them out the door. Hes having a hard time, shes having a hard time with this. The closing moments of the finale were juxtaposed to the big breakup between Ellis Grey (Kate Burton) and Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.), which insinuated that Meredith had finally completed the transformation of becoming her cold and heartless mother. I love the echoes of her mother that are in there and what that means for her. I love the idea that this could possibly mean that for the first time in her life at the hospital, she has neither Cristina [Sandra Oh] nor Derek, and therefore is essentially alone and how shes going to cope with that. Its going to be very interesting for her. … Continue reading

Associated Press Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2015 | 11:29 a.m. CARSON CITY State health officials say a major proposed funding boost for child autism treatment would substantially expand and improve service to the estimated 6,000 Nevada children living with the disorder. Health department chief Romaine Gilliland detailed Gov. Brian Sandoval's plan to add around $61 million to the state's autism support program during an interim budget committee meeting Wednesday. The increase would cover an additional 260 children and decrease wait times that can exceed a year. The state would provide coverage to more than 2,000 children with autism-related disorders when expanded Medicaid is factored in. The Nevada Autism Treatment Assistance Program was created in 2011 to help parents pay for costly autism treatment. Sandoval says that under his plan, overall autism funding in Nevada would rise from $2 million to $73 million. Major discovery on spinal injury reveals unknown immune response

Posted: Published on January 21st, 2015

CHARLOTTESVILLE (WSLS 10) - In a discovery that could dramatically affect the treatment of brain and spinal cord injuries, researchers at the University of Virginia said they've identified a previously unknown, beneficial immune response that occurs after injury to the central nervous system. By harnessing this response, doctors said they may be able to develop new and better treatments for brain and spinal cord injuries, develop tools to predict how patients will respond to treatment, and better treat degenerative conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, glaucoma and Lou Gehrig's disease. Officials say the newly discovered immune response occurs independently of the process that typically goads the immune system into action. In that process, the body identifies and attacks substances known as antigens, such as bacteria and viruses. What we have shown is that the injured central nervous system talks to the immune system in a language that hasn't been previously recognized in this context, said Jonathan Kipnis, PhD, professor in the Department of Neuroscience at the University of Virginia School of Medicine and director of the Center for Brain Immunology and Glia.It sends danger signals' and activates the immune system very rapidly. These danger signals cause immune cells to … Continue reading

Neurofeedback: Controversial brain treatment divides experts

Posted: Published on January 21st, 2015

123RF BRAIN TRAINER: Neurofeedback helps individuals regulate their brain waves. In September 2013, Chris Gardner went from kicking and spinning as a black belt in taekwondo to being locked in a world where he could not follow conversations or even walk his dog. The 58-year-old Americanhad just had brain surgery to remove a large tumour, and the operation affected his mobility and cognition. After nine months of physical and occupational therapy, he'd made little progress. So he tried neurofeedback, hoping this controversial treatment would improve his balance and mental processes. Neurofeedback a type of biofeedback uses movies, video games, computers and other tools to help individuals regulate their brain waves. A patient might watch a movie, for example, while hooked to sensors that send data to a computer. A therapist, following the brain activity on a monitor, programmes the computer to stop the movie if an abnormal number of fast or slow brain waves is detected or if the brain waves are erratic, moving rapidly from fast to slow waves. The stop-and-start feedback, repeated over and over in numerous sessions, seems to yield more normal brain waves. Researchers who endorse the technique say they don't know exactly how it works … Continue reading

New Generation Of Vets Has Higher Suicide Risk, Study Shows

Posted: Published on January 21st, 2015

Justin Eldridge's family will never fully understand why nothing seemed to ease the anguish of the young Marine and father of five, as he wrestled with post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury after a deployment to Afghanistan in 2004-05. Despite stints in VA hospitals and an array of medications, he killed himself in his Waterford home on Oct. 28, 2013. He was 31. "He did his part he followed the treatment they gave him," said his widow, Joanna Eldridge, who is now raising their children alone. "It just wasn't enough, in terms of following up with him and figuring out why he wasn't getting better . . . We just have to do better at helping these guys after they get home." A new study suggests that the suicide risk for Eldridge and other veterans who served in the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is significantly higher 41 to 61 percent higher -- than for the general population. The study, led by Department of Veterans Affairs and Army researchers, is the most comprehensive look to date at the suicide risk for veterans who were on active duty during the recent wars. The analysis to be published next month … Continue reading
