Neurofeedback technique can 'reboot' brain for ADHD, PTSD sufferers

Posted: Published on January 21st, 2015

In September 2013, Chris Gardner went from kicking and spinning as a black belt in taekwondo to being locked in a world where he could not follow conversations or even walk his dog. The 58-year-old Vienna, Va., resident had just had brain surgery to remove a large tumour, and the operation affected his mobility and cognition. After nine months of physical and occupational therapy, he'd made little progress. So he tried neurofeedback, hoping this controversial treatment would improve his balance and mental processes. Neurofeedback a type of biofeedback uses movies, video games, computers and other tools to help individuals regulate their brain waves. A patient might watch a movie, for example, while hooked to sensors that send data to a computer. A therapist, following the brain activity on a monitor, programs the computer to stop the movie if an abnormal number of fast or slow brain waves is detected or if the brain waves are erratic, moving rapidly from fast to slow waves. The stop-and-start feedback, repeated over and over in numerous sessions, seems to yield more-normal brain waves. Researchers who endorse the technique say they don't know exactly how it works but they say the changes in brain waves … Continue reading

Task length linked with cognitive fatigue in MS

Posted: Published on January 21st, 2015

Kessler Foundation researchers have authored a new article that provides insight into the factors that contribute to cognitive fatigue in individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS). The article, "Subjective cognitive fatigue in MS depends on task length," was epublished ahead of print on October 27 in Frontiers in Neurology. The authors are Joshua Sandry, PhD, Helen Genova, PhD, Ekaterina Dobryakova, PhD, John DeLuca, PhD, and Glenn Wylie, DPhil, of Kessler Foundation. This study was supported by the National MS Society and the New Jersey Commission for Brain Injury Research. Cognitive fatigue, which is common in MS, has subjective and objective manifestations. Treatment for fatigue is hindered by the lack of understanding of contributing factors. This study examined how the variables of processing speed, working memory, time on task and cognitive load influence cognitive fatigue in 32 individuals with MS and 24 controls. The investigators found that subjective and objective fatigue were independent of one another, and that subjective cognitive fatigue increased as time on task increased. This increase in cognitive fatigue was greater in the MS group. No relationship was found between cognitive fatigue and the other cognitive variables. "In our study, task length was the factor associated with subjective cognitive … Continue reading

Dermody fights Lyme disease in Boonton Twp.

Posted: Published on January 21st, 2015

Photo courtesy of Brendan Dermody Brendan Dermody is trying to raise money for a hyperbaric chamber to help combat his symptoms of chronic Lyme disease. With him are his younger sisters, who have also been diagnosed with Lyme disease, and their father. From an early age, Brendan Dermody has had to deal with adversity. The 30-year-old Boonton Township resident first lost his mother at the age of 12. Then came the strange medical obstacle to which no one had an answer. Dermody could only explain it as a series of misdiagnoses, mistreatments and dismisses, and being classified into niches of beliefs and practices. Over a period of 12 years, he would be told everything from fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, hormonal changes, and depression - to being labeled lazy and that it was all in his head. Then finally came a diagnosis. "My ophthalmologist is how I found out, of all places," Dermody recounted. "I was there because my left eyelid drooped dramatically, as well as the left side of my face, which is Bell's palsy. We did a full blood panel and lo and behold, positive for Lyme. That's where my world essentially got turned upside down." The Centers for … Continue reading

Dance Marathon to assist record number of donation recipients

SOUTH GLENS FALLS -- A Glens Falls woman battling breast cancer, a Schroon Lake drummer diagnosed with advanced multiple myeloma and the families of two men who died from an accident and illness last month are among the record number of designated recipients of this years South High Dance Marathon funds. The Marathon Committee has announced the 44 beneficiaries of the money that will be raised at the event on March 6-7. The students collected more than $583,000 during last years dance and are hoping to top that record this year. Students are responsible for choosing the beneficiaries, which this year total more than the 39 people and charities helped in 2014. Hannah Hutter, a committee chairperson, said the group decided to increase the number of recipients because it received about 140 applications from organizations and individuals. Were very excited to be dancing for all these people and helping people who need the money, she said. The committee altered its process slightly this year, according to Hutter. Instead of going through each applicant as a group, they handed committee members a packet of information about each one. Then, the committee selected the ones that were a definite yes and voted … Continue reading
