Stem Cell Success: One Couple's Effort to Protect Their Son From Fatal Nerve Disease Will Help Other Boys Too

Posted: Published on January 19th, 2015

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise ANN ARBOR, Mich. University of Michigan alumna Brooke Kendrick and her husband Stephen were ready to start a family. But a devastating inherited nerve disease runs in her family, affecting her brother and threatening to kill or cripple any male child she has. So, the couple chose to conceive via in vitro fertilization, to have their embryos tested for the genetic defect, and to implant only disease-free ones. Now, as they get ready to celebrate the first birthday of their healthy son Gus, and the arrival of his sibling conceived the same way, they know that theyve stopped adrenoleukodystrophy, or ALD, from traveling further down their family line. But at the same time, theyve done something extraordinary for all families whose boys have ALD, whose men (like Brookes brother) have a less-severe form called AMN, or whose women and girls carry the genetic trait and might pass it on. By donating the disease-affected embryos that they didnt want to a U-M Medical School lab, theyve made it possible for scientists to study ALD in its earliest stages. The lab, called the MStem Cell Laboratories, derived embryonic stem cells from the embryo, and … Continue reading

JONATHAN CHARLTON THE STARPHOENIX Sharon Nordstrom feels ashamed for participating in a $38,000 multiple sclerosis stem cell treatment inIndia that was not all it was promoted to be. Im going to be a real mouthpiece now for people who think theyre toosmartto fall for stuff like this, she said. The WinnipegFreePress this week published aninvestigationinto Winnipeg-based Regenetek Research, finding that head researcher Doug Broeska fabricated his credentials, including his PhD, and overstated the effects of the stem-cell treatment. The newspaper also discovered that the chairman of the medical ethics committee at the Inamdar Hospital in Pune,India, told Broeska his lack of credentials and followup violatedinternational ethical standards and ordered him to step down as principal investigator of the stem-cell study. Broeska told theFreePress he was terminated only because it was decided to have a local principal investigator stationed inIndia. TheFreePress further reported that the University of Winnipeg has cancelled a joint stem-cell treatment project involving Broeskas company. Nordstrom says she last heard from Broeska on June 16, when he said … Continue reading

Gene tied to profound vision loss discovered by scientists

Posted: Published on January 19th, 2015

An exhaustive hereditary analysis of a large Louisiana family with vision issues has uncovered a new gene tied to an incurable eye disorder called retinitis pigmentosa, according to an examination led by scientists at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth). It is a family of eye diseases that affects more than 200,000 in the United States and millions worldwide The retina converts images into electrical signals that can be processed by the brain. It acts much like the film in a camera. Retinitis pigmentosa damages this film (the retina) and its early symptoms include decreased night vision and peripheral vision. Once it starts, the loss of vision is relentlessly progressive, often ending in blindness. In the journal Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, UTHealth's Stephen P. Daiger, Ph.D., and his colleagues report their discovery of a new gene tied to retinitis pigmentosa, which brings the total of genes associated with this sight-threatening disease to more than 60. The gene is called hexokinase 1 (HK1). This information is important because it helps affected families cope with the disorder, helps explain the biologic basis of these diseases and suggests targets for drug treatments and gene therapy, said Daiger, the … Continue reading

Stem Cell Transplant, Bone Marrow Transplant | Patient.co.uk

What is a stem cell transplant? A stem cell transplant may be used so that you can have intensive high-dose chemotherapy (and sometimes radiotherapy) to kill cancerous cells. The chemotherapy is higher than conventional chemotherapy and also kills the stem cells in the bone marrow that would normally make blood cells. Therefore, following the chemotherapy, you are given back (transplanted) stem cells which can then make normal blood cells again. A stem cell transplant is sometimes called a bone marrow transplant. However, stem cells can be obtained from blood as well as from the bone marrow. So, the term stem cell transplant is now used. Blood cells are made in the bone marrow, by stem cells. Bone marrow is the soft sponge-like material in the centre of bones. Large flat bones such as the breastbone (sternum) and pelvis contain the most bone marrow. To make blood cells constantly you need a healthy bone marrow. You also need nutrients from your diet, including iron and some vitamins. Stem cells are immature (primitive) cells. There are two main types in the bone marrow - myeloid and lymphoid stem cells. These derive from even more primitive cells called common pluripotent stem cells. Stem … Continue reading

Health researchers digging into own pockets to bridge gap in funding

Posted: Published on January 19th, 2015

Later this month, Torontos University Health Network is planning to enroll a dozen patients with arthritis-wracked knees in a clinical trial of a stem-cell treatment that researchers hope could one day make artificial joint replacements obsolete. The trial, a Canadian first, wont be cheap, despite the small number of recruits. To cover the estimated $500,000 cost, the researchers turned to an unconventional source of funding: 10 orthopedic surgeons at UHNs Toronto Western site who donated a total of $1.25-million of their own money beginning five years ago to kick-start the networks research into a cure for arthritis. The orthopedic surgeons decision to raid their own bank accounts to help pay for research is a rare but not unheard-of move in Canada, one that was driven in part by how much harder it has become to score publicly funded medical research grants in this country. We felt very strongly that in order to go to anybody and say, Would you please give me support for this idea? we had to have our own commitment beyond just the time and effort we would all have to put in, said Nizar Mahomed, director of the UNH arthritis program and one of the surgeons … Continue reading
