The DNA photofit: Amazing breakthrough means police can tell suspect’s colour, height and even age – from a tiny speck …

Police can build physical profile of suspect, even if there are no witnesses Until now, genetic samples could only be matched to criminals on record Innocent suspects can be eliminated using new technology, says expert Each test costs 700, and it takes up to ten days to analyse the material By Martin Beckfor Thed for The Mail on Sunday Published: 17:47 EST, 17 January 2015 | Updated: 17:47 EST, 17 January 2015 Police are now able to build up a detailed picture of a suspect from the smallest speck of blood left at a crime scene thanks to an extraordinary DNA breakthrough. New advances in the technology mean detectives will know if an offender is black or white, the colour of their hair and eyes, their height and age even if there are no witnesses to the crime. Until now, investigators have only been able to match genetic material to records of criminals already in the national database, but the innovation will produce a 'DNA photofit' describing the offender. Dr Denise Syndercombe-Court, a forensic genetics expert at King's College London, said: 'The new technologies raise the possibility that we won't need an actual eyewitness to a crime in order to … Continue reading

Feds, defense turn to DNA in Kansas identity theft case

Posted: Published on January 17th, 2015

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) A federal judge has postponed the Kansas trial of a man charged with assuming the identity of a dead Texas boy, giving the prosecution and defense time to obtain DNA that each side hopes will bolster their case. While DNA evidence has long been a mainstay in other criminal trials, its use in an immigration-related identity theft case like the one filed against Teodoro Erasmo Luna is rare. Most such cases also don't lend themselves to DNA testing because the government usually doesn't have a way to get a comparative DNA sample. In this case, the U.S. attorney's office wants to compare the defendant's DNA to the sisters of the child he is accused of impersonating, David Pena. Luna is charged in a 17-count indictment with aggravated identity theft, misuse of a Social Security number, document fraud, making a false statement on a U.S. passport application, making a false claim of U.S. citizenship, among other related crimes. The idea to use DNA testing was initially brought up by the prosecutor, and the judge agreed after the defense also asked the court to delay the Jan. 13 trial to allow time to conduct the test and receive results. … Continue reading

Another Life: Small is beautiful Irelands lakes, ponds and pools

Posted: Published on January 17th, 2015

Remote corner: swans on Dooaghtry Lough. Illustration: Michael Viney My favourite lake lies at the end of the machair, the grassy plain behind the dunes. Im not sure I can even call it a lake, at least officially, as the EUs water framework directive says a lake has to span at least 50 hectares, and I doubt if this one makes even an old-fashioned acre. But it has long been Dooaghtry Lough on the maps, and thats good enough. On a crisp January morning the sun glows in the reeds and gleams, perhaps, on a pair of mute swans, taking refuge from the whoopers bugling on the big lagoon next door. Or the peace may yield to a squealing swoop of choughs, bouncing between heights, each beak a bright flash of vermilion. In this remote corner sea-feeding otters come to rinse the salt and fish scales from their fur. Their pawprints begin at the edge of the tide, print a line on the sand before disappearing into a watery ravine in the dunes, then furrow up through mosses and liverworts to the lake. At its moist margins, too, a hand lens finds tiny snails, Vertigo-somethings, rare survivors from a chilly … Continue reading

Hendrix students share research at national meeting

Posted: Published on January 17th, 2015

Three Hendrix science students presented research at the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology (SICB) meeting in West Palm Beach, Fla. in January. The meeting had nearly 2,000 people in attendance, 611 posters, 767 talks and 12 symposia, which had close to 120 talks. Kristen OConnell 15, a biochemistry and molecular biology major presented a talk at the meeting. Wes Mills, a biology major and chemistry minor who graduated in the fall, presented a poster at the meeting. Kate Emery 16, a biology major and chemistry minor, presented a poster. The students have worked in the lab of Hendrix biology professor Dr. Jenn Dearolf (OConnell since she was a freshman; Mills and Emery since summer 2014). SICB is a very student-friendly meeting, Dearolf said. If you are a student and are presenting a talk or a poster at the meeting, you are able to stay at one of the conference hotels for all five nights of the meeting for only $75. You just have to work for the Society for two hours, she said. In addition, everyone at the meeting is very supportive of students. They ask questions of the student presenters because they are interested in their work. And … Continue reading
