Janelia group leader Luke Lavis will deliver the next lecture in the Dialogues of Discovery series at Janelia Research Campus in Ashburn, Virginia. Lavis talk, The Chemistry of Color, is on Wednesday, February 18 at 7:00 p.m. Tickets are available at https://chemistryofcolor.eventbrite.com. All Dialogues of Discovery lectures are free and open to the public, but tickets are required for admission, and seating is limited to 250 people. Seewww.janelia.org/eventsfor more information, to sign up to receive email notifications about upcoming lectures, and to watch past lectures. Synthetic colors are everywhere: in our homes, clothing, and food. Synthetic dyes were first discovered in the 19th century and laid the foundation for the modern chemical industry. In this lecture, Lavis will discuss how scientists are revisiting the chemistry of color to transform old dyes into new imaging agents to illuminate complex biological systems. Lavis has been designing and fabricating dyes since he graduated with a degree in chemistry from Oregon State University in 2000. As an undergraduate, he worked in a natural products chemistry lab, recreating complex organic molecules from tree sap and red wine. Uncertain about whether to pursue a research career or go to medical school, he took a break after … Continue reading

Kevin Hart-Josh Gad chemistry highlights ‘The Wedding Ringer’

Posted: Published on January 16th, 2015

It's not quite a match made in heaven, but there is considerable comic chemistry between the high-octane Kevin Hart and the energy-conserving Josh Gad. A good thing since theirs is the only relationship worth watching in "The Wedding Ringer." There sure isn't much going on between Doug (Gad) and his intended, Gretchen (Kaley Cuoco-Sweeting). Doug readily admits she's out of his league. She seems to agree, as does Ed (Ken Howard), her domineering dad. End of story. Making matters worse, Doug is a prickly blend of loser and loner and the bride has a bevy of maids in need of groomsmen. His pockets, however, are lined. Enter Jimmy Callahan/Bic (Hart), the entrepreneurial wedding solver and his booming business Best Man, Inc. In very short order, Jimmy promises Doug the wedding of his dreams. It does, however, require pulling off a complicated maneuver dubbed "the golden tux." Eight faux groomsmen, each with their own identity and back story, head into Jimmy's boot camp for training. Meanwhile the best man must become "Bic," the best friend Doug's been telling Gretchen about, an Army priest stationed in the Middle East who's flying back for the wedding. It's a crazy conceit, and Hart tackles … Continue reading

A little help from your friends just increases pain

Posted: Published on January 16th, 2015

Maybe misery doesnt love company. When physical pain is involved, having an equally suffering friend nearby just makes you feel worse, according to a study published online Thursday in the journal Current Biology. The study wasnt aimed at figuring out whether we get by with a little help from our friends, but whether we catch emotions from them. It found that the stress induced by a social encounter with a stranger can block emotional contagion that otherwise is rampant between acquaintances. Even mice displayed more pain-related behavior when they suffered beside equally miserable acquaintances, the study suggests. The contagion of the pain of one is adding to the pain of the other, making it bigger than it otherwise would be, said neuroscientist Jeffrey Mogil of McGill University in Montreal, lead researcher of the study. In both species, this only works if they know each other. For the mice, the experiments involved some simple injections and restraints. Humans had to hold a hand in a bucket of water chilled to 39 degrees Fahrenheit. Subjects rated their pain while soaking their hand, then were paired with either an acquaintance or a stranger. When just one person in the pair was experiencing the … Continue reading
