Hope for muscular dystrophy patients: Harnessing gene helps repair muscle damage

Posted: Published on January 15th, 2015

Researchers have successfully improved the ability of muscle to repair itself - by artificially increasing levels of the BMI1 gene in the muscle-specific stem cells of mice with muscular dystrophy. The BMI1 gene has been previously linked to the body's ability to regenerate tissue cells in areas such as blood or skin. Led by Queen Mary University of London and published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine, the study provides the first proof of concept that manipulating the activity of this gene enhances the regeneration of the dystrophic muscle to a level where strength is visibly improved. For example, the mice were able to run on a treadmill for a longer time period and at a faster pace. This line of research will now be further developed and scientists aim to one day apply the treatment to patients with chronic muscle wasting such as muscular dystrophy. Muscular dystrophy is a devastating and incurable condition. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy - the deadliest form of the muscle-wasting disease - is caused by mutations in a gene which eventually cause muscle fibres to become damaged and waste away. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is characterised by repeated cycles of muscle damage and repair, resulting in exhaustion … Continue reading

New Study is First to Show That Nearly One in Five Adult Epilepsy Patients Have ADHD Symptoms

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise In a new study led by Alan B. Ettinger, M.D., M.B.A., Director of the Epilepsy Center at Neurological Surgery, P.C. (NSPC) and Professor of Clinical Neurology, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, nearly one in five adult epilepsy patients reported attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms. This is four times higher than the approximate 4.4% rate of ADHD diagnosis in the general adult population. Those in the study who experienced ADHD symptoms also reported higher rates of anxiety, depression and worse seizure frequency. The study, which involved 1,361 adult epilepsy patients, is published online in Epilepsia, the journal of the International League Against Epilepsy. Little was previously known about the prevalence of ADHD symptoms in adults with epilepsy, and the results were quite striking, said Dr. Ettinger, who is an internationally known epilepsy specialist whose research focuses on psychiatric disorders that may accompany epilepsy. To my knowledge, this is the first time ADHD symptoms in adults with epilepsy have been described in the scientific literature. Yet, the presence of these symptoms may have severe implications for patients quality of life, mood, anxiety, and functioning in both their social and work lives. Dr. Ettinger … Continue reading

Aubyn Stahmer Joins UC Davis MIND Institute

Posted: Published on January 15th, 2015

(SACRAMENTO, Calif.) - Aubyn Stahmer, an expert in the translation of evidence-based autism research to community-based practice and delivery, has joined the UC Davis MIND Institute as an associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Stahmer, a licensed clinical psychologist, comes to UC Davis from UC San Diego, where she was research director of the Autism Discovery Institute at Rady Children's Hospital, San Diego, and associate director of the Child and Adolescent Services Research Center. "We evaluate how to take evidence-based interventions that are effective in research settings and make it possible to deliver them in settings where kids are getting usual care, in schools and early-intervention settings in the community," Stahmer said. She is an internationally respected expert in the use of naturalistic developmental behavioral interventions which are validated treatments for autism. Derived from developmental science and applied behavioral analysis (ABA), these interventions are play-based and child-initiated. Goals include the development of communication, language and positive social behaviors. Stahmer is the principal investigator of two U.S. Department of Education grants designed to examine methods of translating research-based interventions in collaboration with community providers. One adapted model, called Classroom Pivotal Response Teaching, is for classroom use in … Continue reading

What causes brain problems after traumatic brain injury? Studies have a surprising answer

Posted: Published on January 15th, 2015

A new paper by researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UM SOM) argues that there is a widespread misunderstanding about the true nature of traumatic brain injury and how it causes chronic degenerative problems. In a perspective article published in the latest issue of Neurotherapeutics, the two authors - Alan Faden, MD, a neurologist and professor of anesthesiology, and David Loane, PhD, an assistant professor of anesthesiology, propose that chronic brain damage and neuropsychiatric problems after trauma are to a large degree caused by long-term inflammation in the brain. In their view, this inflammation is a key culprit behind the myriad symptoms that have been linked with traumatic brain injury and mild traumatic brain injury, including brain atrophy, depression and cognitive decline. Dr. Faden and Dr. Loane also say that there has been too much emphasis on a specific diagnosis known as chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), the set of symptoms and pathology that has been found in some former professional football players. They argue that this may deflect focus from other mechanisms, which may be more important and treatable. They say that although chronic traumatic encephalopathy is a serious problem, relatively few people have been diagnosed with … Continue reading
