Animal contraceptive vaccine could reduce euthanasia in shelters

Posted: Published on January 14th, 2015

Harvard bioengineer David Mooney has been awarded a grant to develop a nonsurgical method for spaying and neutering dogs and cats (BOSTON and LOS ANGELES) - The Gary Michelson Found Animals Foundation has awarded Harvard bioengineer David Mooney a three-year grant totaling more than $700,000 to pursue development of a vaccine technology that would provide a nonsurgical method for spaying and neutering dogs and cats. Mooney is a Core Faculty member at the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University and the Robert P. Pinkas Family Professor of Bioengineering at the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS). Mooney's team will use the grant award to adapt its existing work in implantable and injectable vaccines that activate the body's immune system to attack cancer or infectious disease. This time, the team hopes to tune the technology towards targeting and disrupting a hormone crucial to reproduction in mammals. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), which is produced in the brain, regulates the release of hormones from the pituitary gland that control reproduction in both male and female animals. Mooney and his team will explore how their various vaccine immunotherapies, which work by recruiting and activating the body's immune cells to attack … Continue reading

Anatomy of petal drop in sunflowers

Posted: Published on January 14th, 2015

Despite their consumer popularity as cut flowers, some sunflowers are difficult to market because of their tendency to lose petals soon after their flowers open. This characteristic, "petal drop," which in some varieties can occur within a day of the flowers' opening, ruins the appearance of sunflowers and damages their market value. Sunflower growers interested in finding cultivars that are less prone to this condition have had limited information about petal drop, but a new study in the Journal of the American Society for Horticultural Science contains findings can inform both sunflower breeding programs and consumers' choices. Joyous Suiyigheh Tata and Hans Christian Wien from the Department of Horticulture at Cornell University studied the abscission zone, a differentiated region where petal drop initiates, at the base of petals of sunflower florets in two different cultivars. "We wanted to determine if differences in the abscission zone among sunflower cultivars were correlated with differences in timing of petal drop," the authors said. Two pollen-free hybrid sunflower cultivars were selected for evaluation: Procut Bicolor, which loses its petals easily, and Procut Yellow Lite, which holds its petals much longer. For the first experiment, the researchers measured separation force for the two sunflower cultivars … Continue reading

Study finds cell division at abscission zone of short-lived cultivar occurs earlier than in long-lived variety ITHACA, NY - Despite their consumer popularity as cut flowers, some sunflowers are difficult to market because of their tendency to lose petals soon after their flowers open. Derry Area High School biology teacher recognized by St. Vincent College program

Posted: Published on January 14th, 2015

Derry Area High School biology, anatomy and physiology teacher Alisha Ungvarsky prides herself on pushing students to meet high expectations. Her rigorous teaching style made enough of an impact for Ungvarsky to be one of 23 teachers recognized by the St. Vincent College Great Teacher Recognition Program for 2014. I'm not afraid to push the kids, said Ungvarsky, who is in her sixth year of teaching at Derry. I take my classes kind of to the next level when it comes to my expectations for them, whether it's freshmen in high school or the seniors sitting in my class. I tell them it's not going to be an easy road, but we're going to get through it together. I push them beyond what they think they're capable of doing. I've had a couple of them come back to me over the past few years and say, Thank you for pushing me as hard as you did and really making me work,' she said. I always believe in them. The program honors high school teachers nominated by St. Vincent freshmen for excellence in teaching that provides a positive and enduring influence on students. Ungvarsky was nominated by 2014 Derry graduate Angela … Continue reading
