Canadian Blood Services playing matchmaker at MUN

Posted: Published on January 10th, 2015

There are more than 1,000 Canadians waiting for a match to receive a life-saving stem cell or marrow transplant, and many more worldwide. In the coming month, Canadian Blood Services (CBS) will make it easy for people at Memorial University in St. Johns to help answer that demand. Three events are being held at the campus in January and February to recruit people into the OneMatch donor base, which files results of buccal or cheek swabs to match potential donors with patients in need. The primary target are males between 17 and 35 years old and thats why the focus in January is at MUN. Its the quality of the stem cells that come from that age group, said Peter MacDonald, regional director for CBS in Atlantic Canada. As we age, our stem cells become less viable for transplant, and males are just a stronger source of stem cells. Doesnt mean that females are not capable or able to donate stem cells, but males are the preferred donors for stem cells. MacDonald said older people may register, but will age out of the system faster. Those 51 and older are not eligible. Id encourage someone who is perhaps outside of … Continue reading

Elective surgery – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Posted: Published on January 10th, 2015

Elective surgery or elective procedure (from the Latin eligere, meaning to choose[1]) is surgery that is scheduled in advance because it does not involve a medical emergency. Semi-elective surgery is a surgery that must be done to preserve the patient's life, but does not need to be performed immediately. By contrast, an urgent surgery is one that can wait until the patient is medically stable, but should generally be done today or tomorrow, and an emergency surgery is one that must be performed without delay; the patient has no choice other than immediate surgery, if they do not want to risk permanent disability or death.[2] Most surgeries are elective. Many medically necessary surgeries are elective surgeries. For example, inguinal hernia surgery, cataract surgery, mastectomy for breast cancer, and the donation of a kidney by a living donor are performed as elective surgeries. Elective surgeries include all optional surgeries performed for non-medical reasons, i.e., cosmetic surgery. They also include most surgeries necessary for medical reasons. Cosmetic surgery, such as a facelift or the placement of breast implants, is typically performed to subjectively improve a patient's physical appearance. Cosmetic and aesthetic surgeries are elective surgeries pre-scheduled at a time that is mutually … Continue reading

FDA: Stem Cells from Your Own Fat are a Drug …

Posted: Published on January 10th, 2015

FDA and Adipose Stem Cells Several years ago we became fascinated with the potential of adipose stem cells for both cosmetic and medical purposes. However, we soon discovered that nothing in the written FDA guidelines specifically addressed the use of autologous adipose stem cells. Thus began our journey for an answer. In June 2009, we sent a letter to the FDA asking for a position statement on adipose stem cells. Our request focused specifically on autologous, freshly isolated, adipose stem cells for use in soft tissue reconstruction. These stem cells are from your own fat, for your own usage, and not culture expanded . After a very long wait, we recently received a written response from the FDA. First, a little bit of background for any stem cell newbies. Human cells and tissues intended for human transplant are regulated by the FDA. The FDA maintains two levels of classifications for cells and tissues: 1) HCT/P 361 and 2) HCT/P 351. uncultured stem cells from my own fat. a tissue or a drug? Category 361 is summarized as a tissue. A subset of category 361 includes procedures that take place in the same operative session . These same session operative procedures … Continue reading

CIRM stem cell funding opens

Posted: Published on January 10th, 2015

Endocrine cells develop in human islet-like structures following transplantation in an animal model. These cells produce insulin in response to glucose, effectively replacing the insulin that is lost in people with Type 1 diabetes. Insulin is depicted in blue; somatostatin in red, glucagon in green. The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine said Friday it is now accepting grant applications for funding under its overhauled system. CIRM 2.0, as it's called, is designed to sharpen the focus on quickly translating research to therapies. The state agency says the overhaul reduces the time from application to funding from 22 months to about four months, or 120 days. C. Randal Mills, CIRM's president and CEO, advocated the changes to make the agency more responsive to patient needs. The agency is also changing its way of dealing with applicants, according to a CIRM press release. It will act "not as a passive funding source, but instead as an active investor," the agency said. It will use its own internal resources and outside experts to help advance its selected projects. In December CIRM's governing oversight board approved $50 million for clinical trials and late-state preclinical work for the first six months of the new program. … Continue reading

Tina Fey Asked To Weigh In On Slaughter At French Magazine, Defends Right To Make Dumb Jokes

Posted: Published on January 9th, 2015

An eczema of Tina Fey Defends Free Speech headlines broke out on the web this morning when Fey came to the Winter TV Press Tour to talk about Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, her new comedy series for Netflix. Thats because TV critics and Reporters Who Cover Television woke up this morning to news of a terrorist attack on French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo. And so, in one of the most awkward moments of any TV Press Tour though this ones still in its first day and looking promising a reporter asked Fey to comment about the executions at the publication and the importance of satire, and to tie it into her work on this show and 30 Rock and Saturday Night Live. Fey, who appeared not to have been prepped for that question, responded hesitantly. Obviously, that news is terrible and tragic and upsetting, she said, noting that todays news and the controversy surrounding the Sony movie The Interview are a reminder of how important free speech is and you cannot back down. By way of a follow-up, another reporter asked Fey how she had dealt with pressure to not write or say something in her work. She deftlydodged that one, … Continue reading

Breakthrough: Statin treatment reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease in women

Posted: Published on January 9th, 2015

A large international study, published today in The Lancet, has shown conclusively that statin treatment reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease in women. Whether statin therapy is as effective in women as in men is debated, especially for primary prevention. This study compared the effects of statin therapy between men and women. The research confirms that statins are beneficial not only to women who have already had a cardiovascular event such as a heart attack or stroke, but also in those who - whilst they have not yet developed cardiovascular disease - are at an increased risk of such diseases. Lead investigator Anthony Keech, Professor of Medicine, Cardiology and Epidemiology at the University of Sydney said "These results resolve a major uncertainty about the value of treating women with statin therapy, and reinforce the need for recommendations to treat women to be included in national and international guidelines. "It has long been known that, by reducing low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, statin medications prevent heart attacks and strokes in people at risk of these diseases. "However women tend to develop cardiovascular disease later in life than do men, so have been under-represented in most statin trials. As a result, the benefits … Continue reading
