KUCHING: Manprit Kaur a/p Gurcharan Singh, an International Medical University (IMU) pharmaceutical chemistry graduate, is currently working as a Formulation Executive at Pharmaniaga Research Centre. Her job scope is to develop generic medicines. In the future, she intends to pursue her Masters and contribute more to the industry. Pharmaceutical chemistry is the course that is meant for the job scope that I am venturing into now. Having the theoretical and practical exposure on both pharmaceutical science and chemistry during my degree assisted me to understand my task even better and perform better. Immediately after graduation, I got a job as contract staff in Merck Sharp & Dohme (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd under regulatory affairs. It was a great exposure and learning experience for me in joining a multinational pharmaceutical company, Manprit said, adding that working and studying are definitely two different worlds. IMU provides a strong foundation in this area of expertise through its three-year programme BSc (Hons) in Pharmaceutical Chemistry which is accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), UK. The curriculum begins with foundation sciences in the early semesters, and extends to applied knowledge and skills associated with drug development activities in the later semesters. Industrial attachment and … Continue reading

Surgeons work on a patient in Canberra Hospital's new Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory. Photo: Rohan Thomson Cardiology patients at Canberra Hospital will be treated more quickly and exposed to less radiation using a new $1.27 million machine unveiled on Thursday. The new technology also allows cardiologists to get more accurate images of the heart to provide more precise care. "This cardiac lab is helping to save lives every day. Improving survival rates for people with angina and heart attacks is the key task here and this new investment in equipment is helping our doctors and nurses to perform that care even better, with survival rates that are better than the national average," Health Minister Simon Corbell said. Canberra Hospital's new Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory allows patients to be treated more quickly and exposed to less radiation. Photo: Rohan Thomson Dr Ren Tan, director of cardiology at Canberra Hospital, said the hospital's new Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory was only the third in Australia. It can get them to diagnostic and treatment procedures quickly," he … Continue reading

Southeastern Professor Studies Bee Communities Southeastern biologist Janice Bossart and biology graduate assistant Eric Van Gorder study a bee they caught at one of the protected habitat sites they survey. Bossart received a $103,448 grant from the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to compare and survey native bee communities in conservation habitats. (Photo by Randy Bergeron, Southeastern Louisiana University) (Randy Bergeron) ASoutheastern Louisiana University professor has received a state grant to study bee communities in conservation habitats in southeast Louisiana, including St. Tammany Parish. Janice Bossart, an associate professor of biology, received a $103,448 grant from the state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries to finance the study, the university said. The grant money will enable Bossart to include graduate student Eric Van Gorder, of Fuquay Varina, N.C., and several undergraduates in the work, the university said in a news release. Bossart said the study will include surveys of bee populations, an understudied "faunal group'' in which some species are experiencing population declines. "These surveys will generate data on the distribution and abundance of various species with a primary aim towards identifying rare, habitat-restricted and/or declining species," Bossart said in the news release. "The project also presents a unique opportunity … Continue reading
