Grey's Anatomy to bid farewell to Tessa Ferrer and Gaius Charles

Posted: Published on January 7th, 2015

Two Grey's Anatomy residents are to depart the series. Tessa Ferrer and Gaius Charles, who play Leah Murphy and Shane Ross respectively, have not had their contracts renewed for season 11, according to Deadline. It is not currently clear whether they could make future guest appearances. The pair formed part of a new group of interns alongside Camilla Luddington's Jo Wilson and Jerrika Hinton's Stephanie Edwards, who so far look set to stay. In January, Ellen Pompeo and Patrick Dempsey agreed new two-year contracts that would see them stay with the medical drama for seasons 11 and 12, although the show has not officially been renewed beyond its tenth run. Grey's Anatomy airs on Thursdays at 9/8c on ABC. Sky Living airs the show in the UK on Wednesdays at 10pm. LETTERS: Support of charitable causes appreciated

Posted: Published on January 7th, 2015

Dear Penticton and surrounding communities: 2014 has been another successful year thanks to the massive amount of support we received from the people we serve. With your continued support, The Penticton Professional Firefighters Charitable Society raised and donated another $41,000 to local, provincial and national charities. A few of the charities/programs we donated to are: BC Burn Fund, Muscular Dystrophy Canada, Miss Penticton, South Okanagan Women in Needs Society, Penticton Regional Hospital Pediatrics Ward, Penticton Minor Hockey, The Penticton Safety Village, Have a Heart Telethon, OSNS Telethon, and Toys for Tots to Teens. We would like to thank everyone who came out to our events and supported our causes; as well we are blessed to have made some great partnerships within our own community with businesses who have become corporate sponsors and partners at some of our events. Britco has helped us in many ways like constructing the platform deck for our rooftop campouts and donating money towards our fundraising. Scotia Bank has become great partners at a few of our events like the Peach City Beach Cruise Pancake Breakfast and The Muscular Dystrophy Rooftop Campout, and has matched our fundraising dollar for dollar at these events. Safeway has partnered … Continue reading

Mobile treatment unit brings faster care to stroke patients

Posted: Published on January 7th, 2015

Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the U.S., claiming the lives of more than 140,000 Americans each year. But many lives could be spared if treatment was given sooner. Now, a new program is aiming to speed up treatment time and save lives. Every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. suffers a stroke. "My left arm and part of my face were numb and tingling, says Brad Fahrenkamp, a stroke patient. When I went to stand up to dress myself, I fell right to the floor." But getting treatment quickly can make all the difference. Dr. Rasmussen, director of the Cerebrovascular Center at Cleveland Clinic, says the life-saving drug TPA must be delivered within four and a half hours of a stroke or less, and the sooner the better. "Unfortunately, in the United States, only between three and eight percent of Americans get TPA if they're having a stroke," says Rasmussen. Doctors at the Cleveland Clinic are trying to change that with a new mobile stroke unit that travels to the emergency scene when a stroke is suspected. "I can't really think of a faster way that you could deliver stroke care to a patient," says Rasmussen. … Continue reading

Influx of Trainee Docs in July Doesn't Affect Stroke Care: Study

Posted: Published on January 7th, 2015

MONDAY, Jan. 5, 2015 (HealthDay News) -- People who suffer strokes in July -- the month when medical trainees start their hospital work -- don't fare any worse than stroke patients treated the rest of the year, a new study finds. Researchers investigating the so-called "July effect" found that when recent medical school graduates begin their residency programs every summer in teaching hospitals, this transition doesn't reduce the quality of care for patients with urgent medical conditions, such as stroke. "We found there was no higher rate of deaths after 30 or 90 days, no poorer or greater rates of disability or loss of independence and no evidence of a July effect for stroke patients," said the study's lead author, Dr. Gustavo Saposnik, director of the Stroke Research Center of St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto, in a hospital news release. For the study, published recently in the Journal of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases, the researchers examined records on more than 10,300 patients who had an ischemic stroke (stroke caused by a blood clot) between July 2003 and March 2008. They also analyzed length of hospitalization, referrals to long-term care facilities and need for readmission or emergency room treatment for a stroke … Continue reading

Experiment allows Calven Goza to move knee and toes after he was paralysed in crash

Method offers hope to thousands of people left paralysed by spinal injuries It involves giving the spinal cord an electrical stimulation Scientists say this 'teaches' the spinal cord to control limbs and body By Mark Prigg For Dailymail.com Published: 15:55 EST, 6 January 2015 | Updated: 17:25 EST, 6 January 2015 Researchers are set to expand a pioneering treatment that uses electric shocks to stimulate damaged spinal cords, allowing patients to move again. Their most recent subject, 26 year old Calven Goza, was paralysed below the chest two and a half years ago, and told he would never move his legs again. Using a radical implant that mimics signals from the brain, he was able to move his toe and knee. Scroll down for video 26 year old Calven Goza trying the procedure: Using a radical implant that mimics signals from the brain, he was able to move his toe and knee for the first time since he was paralysed below the chest two and a half years ago. The technique involves giving the spinal cord an electrical stimulation to mimic signals from the brain. Scientists say this 'teaches' the spinal cord to control limbs and body functions independently of … Continue reading
