Kefalas bill seeks to boost autism treatment

Posted: Published on January 4th, 2015

Craig Brown, 4, hugs his mother, Cari Brown, during a session with therapist Rachel Duval at Trumpet Behavioral Health Friday in Fort Collins. Craig, who was diagnosed with autism, has been attending the center for more than a year. Cari says the changes she has seen in her sons behavior and social skills have been extensive.(Photo: Erin Hull/The Coloradoan) Cari Brown knows her family is luckier than most that have a child on the autism spectrum. Her 4-year-old son, Craig, was diagnosed early. While living in Utah, they literally won the lottery in having him selected for an intense therapy program. Seeing the night-and-day results prompted them to move to Fort Collins to take advantage of state insurance laws that mandate some level of coverage for autism treatments. But not everyone has those opportunities, Brown realized, prompting her crusade to fix state law and remove the cap on how much treatment a child can receive. She calls it a moral obligation to help other families. State Sen. John Kefalas, D-Fort Collins, raised her mantle and aims to carry a bill to that effect in the Legislature this year. Craig started treatment just before his third birthday. Its progressed well enough … Continue reading

Tragic case prompts India to adopt law permitting 'passive' euthanasia

Posted: Published on January 4th, 2015

Delhi: Aruna Shanbaug was working as a nurse in Mumbai when she was brutally raped and assaulted by a co-worker - an attack that left her in a vegetative state for the past four decades. Her case inspired a bestselling book and sparked a heated debate about euthanasia in India. Now, a law has taken effect that may help Indians facing a similar tragedy. But it still may not alter Ms Shanbaug's condition. Last month, India adopted a landmark Supreme Court decision to allow "passive euthanasia" for patients who are in a permanent vegetative state or are declared brain-dead. The procedure involves withdrawing medical treatment and allowing death to occur - as opposed to "active euthanasia", in which a life is ended through a lethal dosage of drugs or other means. A handful of other countries, like Sweden and the Netherlands, have similar legislation. In a culture steeped in traditional notions of karma, destiny and duty, the new law is unlikely to be widely invoked, some say. In Ms Shanbaug's case, hospital staff are vowing they will continue to care for her. Advertisement "Euthanasia does not even enter our minds as a thought. It does not exist in our vocabulary. … Continue reading

Ten years in, California's stem cell program is getting a reboot

Posted: Published on January 4th, 2015

Turning 10 years old may not quite mark adolescence for a human child, but for a major government research effort such as California's stem cell program, it's well past middle age. So it's a little strange to hear C. Randal Mills, the new president and chief executive of the program known formally as the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, say it's time to instill in CIRM "a clear sense of mission." But that's what Mills is planning for the coming year, as he launches CIRM 2.0, a comprehensive reboot of the program. Mills, a former biotech company chief executive, took over as CIRM's president last May. His first task, he told me, was to "take a step back and look broadly at how we do our business." He reached the conclusion that "there was a lot of room for improvement." That's a striking admission for a program that already has allocated roughly two-thirds of its original $3-billion endowment. Biomedical researchers are sure to find a lot to like about CIRM 2.0, especially Mills' commitment to streamline the program's grant and loan approval process for projects aimed at clinical trials of potential therapies. Reviews of applications take about 22 months on … Continue reading
