Cancer, heart disease, stroke deaths down, life span stays put

Posted: Published on January 1st, 2015

Heart disease and cancer, which cause of deaths of half of Americans who die each year, continued to loosen their deadly grip in 2013, while rates of deaths attributed to flu and pneumonia surged, the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention said this week. Posting its year-end "data brief" on mortality in the United States in 2013, the CDC reported no change in expected life spans for Americans: On average, an American woman can expect to live to 81.2 years of age -- 85.5 if she makes it to the age of 65. A man can expect, on average, to live to 76.4 years of age. A man still alive at age 65 is likely to live, on average, to almost 83. Of the 2.6 million deaths reported in the United States in 2013, 611,105 -- almost 24% -- were due to heart disease. Some 584,881 -- nearly 23% -- were attributed to cancer. Stroke, the nation's fourth-leading cause of death in 2012, dropped to No. 5 as a killer of Americans in 2013, despite the fact that Americans are suffering strokes at increasingly younger ages. In 2013, 128,978 Americans died of stroke, and the likelihood of an American dying … Continue reading

VIOREL FLORESCU/STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER Alyssa Sims, 30, of Teaneck is training for the 2015 World Special Olympics in Los Angeles. Born 2 months premature by cesarean section, she had to fight for life from the moment of delivery. Sims and her mother suffered from a prenatal condition that came close to being fatal for both of them. We were killing each other, said Renee Herriott, Sims mother. As a result, Sims lungs and central nervous system didnt function properly, requiring a 2-month stay in the hospitals neonatal intensive care unit. She developed cerebral palsy. But despite that, Herriott said, progress came quickly so much so that by the time Alyssa was a toddler, it was clear she would excel beyond the hopes of her loving and protective family. They still pinch themselves at the thought that their tiny baby, now a 30-year-old woman, is a world-class Special Olympian. Overview of Head Injuries: Head Injuries: Merck Manual …

The thick, hard bones of the skull help protect the brain from injury. Also, the brain is surrounded by layers of tissue (meninges) containing cerebrospinal fluid, which cushions the brain. Consequently, most bumps and knocks on the head do not injure the brain. Head injuries that do not affect the brain are considered minor. Head injuries may cause brain injury (traumatic brain injury, or TBI). In the United States, about 13 in 10,000 people sustain minor head injury, and about 3 in 10,000 sustain severe head injury each year. In the United States, from 2002 to 2006, about 1.7 million civilians had TBI each year. About 1.4 million were treated and released from emergency departments. About 275,000 were hospitalized and discharged alive, and 52,000 died. TBI is responsible for about 33% of all deaths caused by injuries of any kind. About 5.3 million people have permanent disabilities due to head injury. About 25 to 33% of people in the United States who have a severe head injury die. About half of head injuries result from motor vehicle crashes, and head injuries occur in more than 70% of severe motor vehicle crashes.
