‘Sky Chemistry’ Leads To Greener Way To Make Plastic

Nylon production creates a greenhouse gas but combining ozone and UV light eliminates it Mimicking the breakdown of atmospheric organic compounds has led to a cleaner way to make a key nylon raw material. Credit: USEPA Mimicking the breakdown of atmospheric organic compounds has led to a cleaner way to make a key nylon raw material. Today, adipic acid is produced by opening cyclohexane using large volumes of nitric acid, a process that emits the ozone-depleting greenhouse gas nitrous oxide. But Kuo Chu Hwang and Arunachalam Sagadevan from the National Tsing Hua University in Taiwan have discovered that ozone and UV light provide an effective alternative. 'Our process is far greener, milder and more environmentally friendly,' Hwang tells Chemistry World. Industrial adipic acid production first oxidises cyclohexane to cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone at high temperatures and pressures. This step's yield can be less than 10%, a significant limitation. Secondly, nitric acid oxidation opens up these ring structures, completely converting them into straight-chain adipic acid. Nitrous oxide released from this process accounts for 58% of all annual human-related emissions of the gas. As well as being the dominant human-emitted ozone depleter, nitrous oxide is the third most important greenhouse gas. Cleaning up … Continue reading

Chemistry with Varun Dhawan real: Shraddha Kapoor

/what-makes-shraddha-kapoor-popular-with-her-fans/eventshow/45629825.cms 01 While the actress is trying to set an example with her professional behaviour, there are many reasons as to why she is already a favourite. What makes Shraddha Kapoor popular with her fans? 02 When it comes to professionalism, Shraddha Kapoor seems to have mastered the art. The actress, who is barely a few films old in Bollywood, took her dedication towards the art to another level altogether when she was having a rather harrowing time at the dance rehearsals of her upcoming film, ABCD 2. According to a report on Miss Malini.com the actress broke down during the rehearsals after a tiff with co-actor Varun Dhawan who wasn't too happy with the way Shraddha was dancing. And though Shraddha was reportedly miffed with her co-star for being too hard on her, she kept at it and mastered the steps. She also forgave Varun after he apologised to her. Apparently, the actor, who is known to be a good dancer, also sent her links to YouTube videos that helped her get the steps correct. What makes Shraddha Kapoor popular with her fans? 03 Besides the fact that her dad is a huge fan of her, there are reasons … Continue reading

MSU chemists solve long-standing problem

Posted: Published on December 24th, 2014

10 hours 26 minutes ago by Evelyn Boswell - MSU News Service BOZEMAN - A Montana State University team says it has discovered the grail of organic chemistry and has just published a paper about its accomplishment in one of the field's top journals. The paper by professor Tom Livinghouse and graduate students Bryce Sunsdahl and Adrian Smith appears in the Dec. 22 issue of the German chemistry journal Angewandte Chemie. First published online in October, the highly technical paper explains how the team in MSU's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry developed an inexpensive and environmentally friendly way to sequentially produce carbon-nitrogen and carbon-carbon bonds commonly found in antibiotics and other pharmaceuticals for humans and animals. Organic chemists often produce a mixture of unneeded products in the process of making the one they want, Livinghouse explained. As a result, they often throw much material away and keep the one they want. To solve that long-standing problem, Livinghouse said the MSU group developed a one-step process that largely eliminates waste products. The process is extremely efficient, and it saves time and money. Livinghouse describes it as green chemistry because the process is non-toxic and produces few byproducts. If done right, it … Continue reading
