Arrow to introduce characters from The Flash spinoff

Posted: Published on December 30th, 2014

The CW's Arrow is set to introduce several characters from the upcoming spinoff series The Flash, it has been announced. It was revealed last year that Grant Gustin was to get his own spinoff based on the DC Comics character, with Robert Knepper, Jesse L Martin, Danielle Panabaker, and Carlos Valdes among those in the supporting cast. First look picture of Grant Gustin as The Flash Panabaker plays bioengineering expert Caitlin Snow, while Valdes plays Cisco Ramon, a scientist at Central City's S.T.A..R. Labs. Executive produce Marc Guggenheim explained at a press event on Monday (March 17): "The idea of bringing in those characters really, really appealed to us because it allowed us to honour our original intention [of] doing something Flash-related around Episode 19 or 20 without basically paying Grant Gustin to sit around with his eyes closed/unconscious the whole episode." Arrow returns to the CW on Wednesday (March 19). Sky1 airs the show in the UK. View original post here: Arrow to introduce characters from The Flash spinoff … Continue reading

Anatomy of a 2014 villain: Cliven Bundy

Posted: Published on December 30th, 2014

Background: Back in April, Cliven Bundy was just your average Nevada racist. The 67-year-old Mormon earned his living as a cattle rancher, allowing his herd to graze illegally on nearby federally protected land. The controversy: Bundy owed a lot ofmoney to the federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in grazing fees and penalties $1.1 million, to be exact for allowing his cattle on federal property. Bundy refused to pay, so the BLM began impounding his 900 head of cattle. After posting on his website about the standoff, area supporters came to his ranch to protest the roundup, leading Bundy to threaten a range war against the U.S. government. The confrontation turned violent when an armed militia gathered on his ranch, aiming rifles at BLMs forces, who were in turn armed with semi-automatic weapons. BLM decided to retreat and Bundy became something of a folk hero to the anti-government set, garnering significant media attention in the process. Sens. Rand Paul, Dean Heller and large swaths of the conservative press lionized the rancher. Sen. Harry Reid, meanwhile, called Bundys militia a band of domestic terrorists. It later came out that Bundy was (not unexpectedly)super racist:I want to tell you one more thing … Continue reading

Snyder signs bill with $5.5 million for autism

Posted: Published on December 29th, 2014

By - Associated Press - Monday, December 29, 2014 LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder has signed legislation to take $5.5 million from a state autism fund and redirect it to autism programs at universities and for autism-related family assistance services. The fund was created in 2012 to reimburse health insurance companies for the cost of benefits covering the diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorders. But insurers havent filed nearly as many claims as expected. Western Michigan University will receive $3 million, while Central Michigan and Oakland universities will continue getting $500,000 apiece. The money will help universities train health workers to assess, diagnose and provide treatment to people with autism spectrum disorders. The bill signed Monday also provides $1.5 million for the Autism Alliance of Michigan to provide assistance and resources for families dealing with the disorder. Teens efforts bring hope for children with autism

Posted: Published on December 29th, 2014

By JESSICA DAMICO Staff Writer Sharwani Kota, 15, of Edison, uses skills gleaned from volunteering at the New Jersey Institute for Disabilities to work with children at a school in Southern India. Her charity work helps raise money for children with autism in India and the United States. When 15-year-old honor student Sharwani Kota was a child, it bothered her to see some fellow students struggling and being treated differently. Instead of simply turning her head or shrugging it off, the tenacious teen has since made it her mission to help children with autism. I have grown up with children diagnosed with autism through elementary and middle schools, and have seen how these kids have been separated from us and have suffered through so much trouble not being able to express themselves. I felt that they were being isolated from learning normally and were rather treated very differently, said the sophomore at J.P. Stevens High School. This has motivated me since childhood to do something to make a difference in society. Sharwani began her efforts by learning more about autism. She was alarmed to find out that New Jersey has the highest prevalence of the disorder, with one in 45 … Continue reading
