Eczema stunting your growth?

Posted: Published on December 12th, 2014

Posted: Thursday, December 11, 2014, 4:00 AM (HealthDay News) -- The skin disease eczema doesn't increase the risk of being short, researchers report. "Childhood eczema is not associated with short stature overall, although severe disease with prominent sleep disturbance is associated with higher odds of short stature in early adolescence," the Northwestern University researchers wrote. Previously, there have been conflicting results in studies looking for a possible link between eczema and height, they said. The current analysis looked at nine past studies. Those studies included almost 265,000 children and teens and more than 80,000 adults, according to the researchers. Overall, the analysis showed that eczema was not associated with significant differences in height. However, a very small number of youngsters with severe eczema who did not get enough sleep appeared to be at increased risk for slower growth. These children had three or fewer nights of sufficient sleep a week, according to the study. And the researchers also found that this link was significant only at ages 10 to 11, which suggests that this growth impairment may be reversible. "Future studies are warranted to better characterize sleep disturbances and other risk factors and mechanisms of growth impairment in eczema and … Continue reading

Study finds eczema, short stature not associated overall

Posted: Published on December 12th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 10-Dec-2014 Contact: Marla Paul marla-paul@northwestern.edu 312-503-8928 The JAMA Network Journals @JAMA_current Eczema, an itchy chronic inflammatory disease of the skin, was not associated overall with short stature in an analysis of data from several studies, although a small group of children and adolescents with severe eczema who do not get enough sleep may have potentially reversible growth impairment, according to a study published online by JAMA Dermatology. Eczema (atopic dermatitis) affects about 10 percent of children and adults in the United States. The disease results in a number of conditions that could impact growth in children and adolescents, such as sleep impairment, chronic inflammation and treatment with systemic corticosteroids. However, there have been conflicting results in studies about a possible association between eczema and short stature, according to background in the study. Jonathan I. Silverberg, M.D., Ph.D, and Amy S. Paller, M.D., M.S., of Northwestern University, Chicago, used data from nine population-based studies to examine a possible association between eczema and being short. The data included 264,326 children and adolescents and 83,511 adults. An analysis of the studies indicates that, overall, eczema was not associated with significant differences of height in any of the studies or in … Continue reading

Supernus Faces another Patent Challenge for Oxtellar XR – Analyst Blog

Posted: Published on December 12th, 2014

Supernus Pharmaceuticals, Inc. ( SUPN ) is facing yet another patent challenge for its epilepsy treatment, Oxtellar XR. This time round, the company has received a Paragraph IV notice from TWi Pharmaceuticals, Inc. which is looking to get its generic version of Supernus' Oxtellar XR capsules approved in the U.S. Oxtellar XR was launched in Feb 2013 for the treatment of epilepsy. The drug is protected by four patents listed in the FDA's Orange Book, all of which are slated to expire on Apr 13, 2027. We remind investors that Actavis ( ACT ) is also looking to bring its generic version of Oxtellar XR to market. Supernus has filed patent infringement lawsuits against Actavis. Supernus is currently reviewing the details of the Para IV notice from TWi Pharma. The company will most likely file a patent infringement lawsuit against TWi Pharma. We note that Oxtellar XR is not the only product in Supernus' portfolio to face a patent challenge. Supernus is occupied with a number of patent infringement lawsuits related to its other antiepileptic drug, Trokendi XR. Earlier this week, Supernus received a Para IV notice from Par Pharmaceutical, Inc., informing the company about the submission of an abbreviated … Continue reading

December 11, 2014, 12:14 PM Last updated: Thursday, December 11, 2014, 12:15 PM Taxpayers would be allowed to donate to autism research by checking a box on their state tax returns and families would be have access to more information about programs and treatment options, under bills approved by an Assembly committee today. Both bills cleared the Assembly Women and Children committee and head to the full Assembly for a vote. The tax donation measure would create an autism research fund with the money ultimately being distributed by the state Department of Health. New Jersey has one of the best systems in the country for identifying, diagnosing and caring for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. It also has the highest autism rate in the nation its hard to find someone in New Jersey who doesnt have a family member, friend, or neighbor who faces the challenges of autism, bill sponsor Assemblyman Jay Webber, R-Morris, said in a statement. Allowing taxpayers to make voluntary contributions through their income tax returns to help combat this terrible problem is an easy and convenient way to help fund the states many exemplary autism programs.
