Is donkey milk the next big thing?

Posted: Published on December 15th, 2014

Few Nativity scenes come without an ass helping keep the Baby Jesus snug in his manger. But who knew that asses (donkeys) have health benefits too. Asses milk was, of course, hailed as an elixir by the ancients and favoured by Cleopatra for daily bathing but there is now renewed interest in it after Pope Francis revealed he was fed such milk as a baby. Rich in lactose and low in fat, donkey milk is said by experts to be the closest animal milk to the human variety. The UNs Food and Agriculture Organisation says it has particular nutritional benefits, with a protein profile that may make it more suitable for those allergic to cows milk. I first learned of the milks growing reputation in a tourist gift shop in Paphos, Cyprus, last month, where bars of donkey milk soap, liqueur, chocolate and cosmetics were on sale. I was particularly intrigued by the assistants account of a Dutch customer who snapped up 15 bars of soap, declaring they were the best relief for his psoriasis. For the past 15 years Ive regularly suffered bouts of itchy, flaky inflamed skin under my beard and eyebrows. I suspect its psoriasis although it … Continue reading

Posted: Published on December 15th, 2014

Dec. 15, 2014, midnight ALISON Armstrong never thought she would be affected by stroke. Alison Armstrong is using the experience of her stroke to urge others to be aware of the signs. Picture: MATTHEW SMITHWICK ALISON Armstrong never thought she would be affected by stroke. The Thurgoona resident, 47, had been fit and healthy and was managing the Katies clothing store in Centro Albury. During a shift in August last year, she had tried to stand and felt the left side of her body dragging. Her face dropped and started to tingle and her speech became slurred. Her daughter Brooke, who worked nearby, came to the store and instantly recognised she was having a stroke. Mrs Armstrong was rushed to hospital for treatment and given drugs to reduce blood clots and minimise the damage. Yet the mother-of-three said her life was still being significantly affected more than 12 months later. Visit link: Alison uses stroke trauma to educate … Continue reading

Patient implants in Parkinsons trial completed

Posted: Published on December 15th, 2014

Living Cell Technologies Limited today announced that the final patient has been successfully implanted in its Phase I/IIa clinical trial of regenerative cell therapy NTCELL for Parkinsons disease. The operation took place at Auckland City Hospital last week. The Phase I/IIa clinical trial, led by Dr Barry Snow, is an open-label investigation of the safety and clinical effects of NTCELL in patients who no longer respond to current therapy. Dr Snow MBChB, FRACP, FRCPC, leads the Auckland Movement Disorders Clinic at the Auckland District Health Board and is an internationally recognised clinician and researcher in Parkinsons disease. LCT anticipates presenting the results of the 26-week trial at the 19th International Congress of Parkinsons Disease and Movement Disorders in San Diego in June 2015. Dr Ken Taylor, chief executive, notes that the success of the implant procedure means that LCTs clinical programme remains on track. "The treatment phase of the trial has been completed on schedule. We believe NTCELL has the potential to be the first disease-modifying treatment for patients who are failing the current conventional treatment for Parkinsons disease," said Dr Taylor. Time to use your head and wear a helmet when cycling

Posted: Published on December 15th, 2014

Ireland is on target to have its worst year since 2008 for cyclist deaths and there is no legal requirement for cyclists to wear a helmet and no Government appetite to change the law, writes Brian McDonald. RYAN SMITH was and still is mad about his hair. At 16, image is all important and Ryan never went anywhere socially without his blond hair groomed to perfection. Even when cycling, keen sportsman Ryan didnt want anything to interfere with his tresses and wouldnt be caught dead wearing a cycling helmet. Tragically, he nearly was and probably because he didnt have a helmet. In August last year his bike collided with a van and Ryan suffered a brain injury. He was in a coma when rushed to hospital and received emergency treatment in a respiratory ward before being moved to a specialist neurology centre. Following extensive treatment, Ryan finally made it home on September 1 this year, 13 months after his accident. He is still brain injured, but his family in Lincolnshire are just thrilled to have him back once again. His Dad, Mark, a paramedic, is now campaigning for a law to force cyclists to wear helmets. Mark Smith is calling … Continue reading
