Lux Life | UK Lifestyle Blog: My Struggle With Eye Eczema.

Posted: Published on December 13th, 2014

Edit: I have found a cream that clears up my eye eczema and has also helped many others. Please scroll down to the bottom of the post for this if you don't want to read my whole story. This is a bit of a different post from me today, and is quite a personal one and something I'm really self-conscious and sensitive about. It's going to be very long, and have some really gross photos towards the end. But I hope you'll continue reading, because I hope that someone out there will be able to help me somehow, or will know someone who can help me. I've had eczema for as long as I can remember. There isn't a time where I can't remember having it. When I was younger I would always get it under my knees and in the inside of my elbows, and I had to bathe in E45emollient. It would usually strike during Autumn and Winter when the heating came on and cold weather arrived, and for some reason when I was a child seawater also flared it up (thankfully I seemed to grow out of this!). Anyway, nothing has ever really worked for it, I've … Continue reading

Man Utd news: Darren Fletcher reveals how bowel condition put his life at risk

Posted: Published on December 13th, 2014

Darren Fletcher has revealed the shocking extent of his struggles with ulcerative colitis, saying how the condition put his life at risk, that he needed to go to the toilet up to 30 times a day and made him wary of going out in public. The Manchester United midfielder, who was diagosed with the bowel condition in 2008, was forced to miss over a year of football as he battled the disease, which ultimately led to him undergoing surgery to remove his large intestine. Fletcher returned to football on Boxing Day last year but, in an interview with the Daily Mail, he admitted there were moments he feared for his life. He said: "People close to me were getting worried because my bowel was in a bad way. There was a concern it could perforate at any time, almost explode inside me. I dont like talking about death but I would have been in trouble if something like that had happened." Fletcher also revealed how he was affected by "pounding headaches and the constant need for the bathroom" when the condition was at its most severe. He needed to go to the toilet constantly and once lost so much blood … Continue reading

Nicotine patch ends seizures for 5-year-old girl

Posted: Published on December 13th, 2014

The "patch" has long been an aid for people who are trying to kick the habit. But now, it is also helping a girl with a rare genetic disorder. A 5-year-old girl with a rare form of epilepsy is now living virtually seizure-free, thanks to an unusual treatment. After exhausting all other options, doctors at a Florida hospital discovered that a tiny dose of nicotine, administered through a commercially available nicotine patch, was just enough to do the trick. 5-year-old Karen Macon has energy to spare, but that wasn't always the case. "She'd wake up tired every morning with dark circles under her eyes," says Annie Macon, Karens mother. Doctors diagnosed Karen with a rare genetic form of epilepsy called autosomal dominant nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy. "Every single night, she was having an average of 20 seizures," says Ki Hyeong Lee, medical director for the epilepsy program at Florida Hospital for Children. "We tried probably seven different anti-convulsive medications and none of them worked, adds Macon. Dr. Lee says Karens genetic mutation appears to be linked to a nicotine deficiency in the body. Dr. Lee also found evidence that a nicotine patch helped stopped seizures in an adult with the … Continue reading

Brain inflammation a hallmark of autism

Posted: Published on December 13th, 2014

(HealthDay News) -- Brain inflammation, triggered by an overactive immune system, is common among people with autism, a new study finds. However, this inflammation does not cause the developmental disorder. Rather, it's a response to the different factors that can trigger autism, the researchers stressed. Their findings are based on autopsies performed on 72 brains of people with and without autism. In the brains of those who had autism when they were alive, a certain type of cell had its genes for inflammation permanently turned on. "There are many different ways of getting autism, but we found that they all have the same downstream effect," study author Dan Arking, an associate professor at the Institute for Genetic Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, said in a university news release. "What we don't know is whether this immune response is making things better in the short term and worse in the long term," he added. The next step is to find out whether treating this inflammation would reduce symptoms of autism, Arking said. The study was published online Dec. 10 in the journal Nature Communications. "This type of inflammation is not well understood, but it highlights the … Continue reading
