Genetic Errors Linked to Aging Underlie Leukemia That Develops After Cancer Treatment

Posted: Published on December 9th, 2014

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise For a small percentage of cancer patients, treatment aimed at curing the disease leads to a form of leukemia with a poor prognosis. Conventional thinking goes that chemotherapy and radiation therapy induce a barrage of damaging genetic mutations that kill cancer cells yet inadvertently spur the development of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a blood cancer. But a new study at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis challenges the view that cancer treatment in itself is a direct cause of what is known as therapy-related AML. Rather, the research suggests, mutations in a well-known cancer gene, P53, can accumulate in blood stem cells as a person ages, years before a cancer diagnosis. If and when cancer develops, these mutated cells are more resistant to treatment and multiply at an accelerated pace after exposure to chemotherapy or radiation therapy, which then can lead to AML, the study indicates. The teams findings, reported Dec. 8 in the journal Nature, open new avenues for research to predict which patients are at risk of developing therapy-related AML and to find ways to prevent it. About 18,000 cases of AML are diagnosed in the United States … Continue reading

Genetic Screening Saved This Babys Life

TIME Health medicine Genetic Screening Saved This Babys Life Researchers say sequencing genomes can lead to quicker diagnoses and effective treatments for more than half of children affected by brain disorders Mya Burkhart was only six months old when she went into cardiac arrest. Fortunately, she was in the hospital when it happened, brought there by her parents because she had trouble breathing. It was her eighth or ninth visit to the emergency room for her respiratory problems, but each time the doctors had sent the Burkharts home with more questions than answers. Mya wasnt developing at the normal rate. She couldnt lift her head and wasnt responding to people and things around her. Doctors thought she might have a muscle disorder, but her other symptoms did not fit with that diagnosis. After her heart scare, Mya spent three weeks, including her first Christmas, in the ICU on a ventilator. I couldnt pick her up or anything, says her mother Holly. Still unable to solve the mystery of what was ailing her, the doctors finally suggested she have her genome tested. Maybe, they hoped, her DNA would offer some clues about why she wasnt growing normally. MORE: The DNA Dilemma: … Continue reading

New therapy holds promise for restoring vision

Posted: Published on December 8th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 8-Dec-2014 Contact: Robert Sanders rlsanders@berkeley.edu 510-643-6998 University of California - Berkeley @UCBerkeleyNews A new genetic therapy not only helped blind mice regain enough light sensitivity to distinguish flashing from non-flashing lights, but also restored light response to the retinas of dogs, setting the stage for future clinical trials of the therapy in humans. The therapy employs a virus to insert a gene for a common ion channel into normally blind cells of the retina that survive after the light-responsive rod and cone photoreceptor cells die as a result of diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa. Photoswitches - chemicals that change shape when hit with light -are then attached to the ion channels to make them open in response to light, activating the retinal cells and restoring light sensitivity. Afflicting people of all ages, retinitis pigmentosa causes a gradual loss of vision, akin to losing pixels in a digital camera. Sight is lost from the periphery to the center, usually leaving people with the inability to navigate their surroundings. Some 100,000 Americans suffer from this group of inherited retinal diseases. In a paper appearing online this week in the early edition of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy … Continue reading

Twins joy for TV’s Julia Bradbury

Posted: Published on December 8th, 2014

Television presenter Julia Bradbury and her Irish partner Gerard Cunningham have revealed that she is expecting twins after undergoing five rounds of IVF treatment. The 44-year-old and developer Cunningham are already parents to three-year-old son Zephyrus, and the twins are due to be born in the spring. Speaking to Hello! Magazine, Bradbury said: "I'm completely overjoyed. The prospect of having two for one is just incredible. "Starting later in life having children, I didn't ever think I'd have a big family. Zeph was the unexpected miracle and I was thrilled and happy to have him. It's taken a long time to get to this stage so the prospect of going from one to three is utterly amazing." She added: "I am slightly guarded and I'm not taking anything for granted. This whole process is very much about milestones - getting to the next stage - so it's quite a rollercoaster. "We've got to be ultra, ultra careful, really cautious and try to stay as healthy, calm and comfortable as possible." Of Cunningham's support, she said: "He knows what I've been going through and said if he could do it, he would have. But he's equally passionate about siblings for Zeph … Continue reading

Huntington Willard, an innovative leader in the fields of genetics and genome biology who has built comprehensive research centers at leading institutions, has been appointed the next president and director of the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass. President Robert J. Zimmer, who is also chairman of the MBLs Board of Trustees, announced the appointment to the MBL and University communities. MBL is an affiliate of the University of Chicago, a relationship designed to yield novel avenues for scientific discovery and education at both institutions. At the MBL, Willard will lead one of the worlds foremost centers for biological research, international collaboration and education. Willard, currently the Arts & Sciences Professor of Biology and Genome Sciences at Duke University, will begin his appointment at the MBL on Jan. 1, 2015. Willard has earned a reputation as a groundbreaking scientist, a strong leader and builder of complex academic initiatives, as well as a talented educator who has received multiple teaching awards. From 2003 to 2014 he was the founding director of the Duke Institute for Genome Sciences and Policy, a highly interdisciplinary unit that spanned the life sciences, engineering, medicine, social sciences and the humanities. Genetics show Viking women colonized new lands, too

Posted: Published on December 8th, 2014

Image: Wikimedia Commons Oscar Wergeland Vikings may have been family men who traveled with their wives to new lands, according to a new study of ancient Viking DNA. Maternal DNA from ancient Norsemen closely matches that of modern-day people in the North Atlantic isles, particularly from the Orkney and Shetland Islands. The findings suggest that both Viking men and women sailed on the ships to colonize new lands. The new study also challenges the popular conception of Vikings as glorified hoodlums with impressive seafaring skills. "It overthrows this 19th century idea that the Vikings were just raiders and pillagers," said study co-author Erika Hagelberg, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Oslo in Norway. "They established settlements and grew crops, and trade was very, very important." Vikings hold a special place in folklore as manly warriors who terrorized the coasts of France, England and Germany for three centuries. But the Vikings were much more than pirates and pillagers. They established far-flung trade routes, reached the shores of present-day America, settled in new lands and even founded the modern city of Dublin, which was called Dyfflin by the Vikings. Some earlier genetic studies have suggested that Viking males traveled alone and … Continue reading
