Doctors and patients distressed by plan to move Royal Berkshire Hospital stroke unit

Posted: Published on December 8th, 2014

Doctors and patients are distressed by a plan to move Royal Berkshire Hospitals stroke unit from its purpose-built ground-floor ward. The hospital trust says it will provide improvements for elderly patients with hip fractures. The plan is to move the service from the Caversham ward, opened by the Queen in February 2006, to Woodley ward on an upper floor. It would mean reducing the number of stroke beds from 16 to 12, moving patients three storeys up and several corridors away from where they are treated, far from the hydrotherapy pool and therapy garden. In a letter to hospitals chief executive Jean OCallaghan, the staff doctors say of the stroke unit: Absence of social spaces will lead to patients remaining in their beds, will lengthen their hospital admission, waiting lists will lengthen for the service reducing efficiencies of the acute bed locations like ICU [intensive care unit] trauma and acute medical wards. The four doctors whom getreading has been asked not to name say: The move to Woodley ward does mean the Royal Berkshire Hospital will no longer meet the neuro-rehabilitation needs of the community, or the clinical needs of the neurologically impaired patients. Her Majesty the Queen watches a … Continue reading

Two Studies Predict Surgery Outcomes for High-Risk Epilepsy Patients

Posted: Published on December 8th, 2014

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise SEATTLE, December 7, 2014 Anti-epileptic drugs control seizures and improve quality of life for most people with epilepsy. But for those who find medical treatment ineffective or intolerable, brain surgery is sometimes the next best option. Two studies to be presented at the 68th AES Annual Meeting in December explore the outcomes of brain surgery for children with severe epilepsy. One study (Platform Session A.05) created a decision analysis model to compare how two treatment strategies medical treatment alone versus brain surgery influenced the life expectancy of pediatric patients with refractory epilepsy. Researchers at Boston Childrens Hospital developed a decision analysis model with data from the literature. Their findings suggest that surgery increases the odds of a longer life expectancy, compared with medical treatment alone. For example, in a cohort of 10-year old patients, epilepsy surgery in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy yielded 55.2 years of life expectancy, while medical treatment yielded 49.3 years of life expectancy. In extratemporal epilepsy, surgery yielded 54.9 years of life expectancy while medical treatment only yielded 49.3 years. Authors note that the findings suggest that brain surgery is significantly more advantageous than medical treatment alone for … Continue reading

New study identifies first gene associated with familial glioma

Posted: Published on December 8th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 7-Dec-2014 Contact: Glenna Picton picton@bcm.edu 713-798-7973 Baylor College of Medicine @bcmhouston HOUSTON - (Dec. 7, 2014) - An international consortium of researchers led by Baylor College of Medicine has identified for the first time a gene associated with familial glioma (brain tumors that appear in two or more members of the same family) providing new support that certain people may be genetically predisposed to the disease. "It is widely thought amongst the clinical community that there is no association between family history and development of glioma. Because we know very little about the contributing genetic factors, when cases occur in two or more family members, it is viewed as coincidental," said Dr. Melissa Bondy, associate director of cancer prevention and population sciences at the NCI-designated Dan L. Duncan Cancer Center at Baylor College of Medicine and lead author of the report that appears in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute today. "By understanding more about the genetic link, we hope that one day we can improve treatments and preventive strategies for those with a family history of glioma." Bondy estimates that approximately five percent of brain tumors run in families. The study was conducted through the … Continue reading
