IVF treatment to be offered to couples in Vale of York

Posted: Published on December 4th, 2014

COUPLES in the Vale of York have finally won access to fertility treatment on the NHS. Health chiefs at NHS Vale of York Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) received the green light from its Governing Body today to press ahead with plans to provide IVF. York had been the only area in the country not to provide a single cycle of the treatment. The move comes after a year of indecision from the CCG which, having said it would provide the treatment, backtracked on the decision in August saying it would cost too much. But having revised the potential demand from couples it has todaybeen decided it is affordable. Dr Emma Broughton, a local GP and the CCGs Clinical Lead for Womens Health said she was delighted by the change in the commissioning position. She said: Im so proud to be part of the team at the CCG that has championed the provision of local IVF services and helped to change, for the first time in several years, the commissioning position for the Vale of York." Nearly 1000 people had signed a petition against the "postcode lottery" - calling for York to bring its policy in line with the rest of … Continue reading

Duke Signs Exclusive Licensing Agreement with Leading Genome Editing Company

Posted: Published on December 4th, 2014

Duke University has signed an exclusive licensing agreement with Editas Medicine, a leading genome editing company, for genetic engineering technologies developed in the lab of Charles Gersbach, assistant professor of biomedical engineering. The agreement focuses on Gersbachs work with genome engineering technologies known as CRISPR/Cas9 and TALENs. Charles Gersbach The agreement allows broad use of the technology developed in Gersbachs lab for the prevention or treatment of human disease. To this point, Gersbachs most notable work in that field is on Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a genetic disease affecting one in 3,500 newborn males that currently has no approved treatment and causes muscular deterioration, paralysis and eventual death, usually by age 25. Gersbachs work is focused on using gene editing to correct the mutated gene that causes the disease, in contrast to treating the resulting symptoms of the disease. Gersbach has also pioneered the use of both CRISPR/Cas9 and TALEs for turning on genes in a way that could be used to treat degenerative disorders or compensate for genetic defects. Charlies deep expertise in both genome editing and in this area of biology is a tremendous asset as we begin to understand how to apply genome editing technologies to specific diseases, … Continue reading

Experimental Gene Therapy Successful in Certain Lymphomas and Leukemia

Posted: Published on December 4th, 2014

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise Study results of CD19-directed chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) therapy using the Sleeping Beauty non-viral transduction system to modify T cells has demonstrated further promise in patients with advanced hematologic malignancies. Patients who had acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) or chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) were part of clinical trials at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, which used the Sleeping Beauty gene transfer system initially discovered at the University of Minnesota. Results from the study were presented at the 56th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Hematology (ASH) annual conference in San Francisco and were published in the Dec. 5 issue of the ASH journal Blood. The Sleeping Beauty gene was named for its ability to awaken an extinct transposon DNA that can replicate itself and insert the copy back into the genome. This allows a gene to be transferred into a DNA molecule known as a plasmid. An enzyme called a transposase binds to the plasmid, cuts the transposon and gene out of the plasmid and pastes it into the target DNA sequence. This gene transfer system was the basis for the MD Anderson clinical trials. Using … Continue reading
