Posted: Published on December 6th, 2014

05.12.2014 - (idw) Johannes Gutenberg-Universitt Mainz Chemistry professor from Mainz University developed in a collaborative research project a novel foil packaging material that displays information on food freshness by means of color changes The Mainz chemistry professor Katja Heinze and her Luxembourg cooperation partner Dr. Patrick Choquet have received the Interregional Research Award for the development of novel, intelligent foils for food packaging. This is the sixth time this award worth EUR 35,000 has been presented. Its purpose is to promote collaboration in cross-border research projects and reinforce the profile of the interregional research landscape. "To offer capable partners the best conditions for cross-border cooperation that is the main aim of our mutual cooperation strategy in the sector of higher education and research in the Greater Region. The SURFAMINE research project that has been honored with the 2014 Interregional Research Award is an outstanding example of the potential that lies in cross-border cooperation," emphasized State Secretary Professor Thomas Deufel of the Ministry of Education, Science, Continuing Education, and Culture of Rhineland-Palatinate. Working in collaboration with Dr. Patrick Choquet from the Centre de Recherche Public in Belvaux, Luxembourg on the SURFAMINE project, the work group of Professor Katja Heinze of the … Continue reading

Augsburgs greener way to do chemistry

Posted: Published on December 6th, 2014

Greener science. (Alex Friedrich / MPR) Ive just been introduced to green science. Im in Prof. Michael Wentzels organic chemistry class, and hes showing his students how to do chemistry in a more environmentally friendly way Benign by design, as he puts it. Theyre reproducing a fluorescent substance found in scorpions but doing it without generating all the waste thats usually produced in such chemical processes. Wentzel uses a combination of heating and mixing to enable his components to form chemical bonds, thus avoiding the use of solvents and thus taking one more chemical out of the equation. And to get his components to react with each other more efficiently, Wentzel uses a polymer styrene catalyst instead of the usual toxic mineral acid. The professor tells me: Its how we should train scientists now. Companies want scientists that know the way to design chemistry to be more environmentally friendly. Chemistry doesnt need to be a fixer of problems. It can be a way to never have the problems in the first place. Alex Friedrich reports on higher education issues for MPR News. Among the stories he has covered: the fall of the Berlin Wall, aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, collapse of … Continue reading

Epinephrine May Do More Harm Than Good For Cardiac Arrest

Posted: Published on December 6th, 2014

December 5, 2014 Provided by Rachel Cagan, American College of Cardiology Study questions current international guidelines for resuscitation For patients in cardiac arrest, administering epinephrine helps to restart the heart but may increase the overall likelihood of death or debilitating brain damage, according to a study published today in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology. The study offers new data in an ongoing debate over the risks and benefits of using epinephrine to treat cardiac arrest, an often-fatal condition in which the heart stops beating. Epinephrine, also known as adrenaline, is a hormone that stimulates the heart and promotes the flow of blood. Current international guidelines recommend administering 1 milligram of epinephrine every 3-5 minutes during resuscitation. The role of epinephrine is more and more questionable in cardiac arrest, said the studys lead author Florence Dumas, M.D., Ph.D., of the Parisian Cardiovascular Research Center in France. We need to constantly assess our procedures and protocols to make sure that the use of epinephrine is effective and done at the correct time. She added that this study underscores the need for caution when using epinephrine. Administering epinephrine to patients in cardiac arrest has been shown to improve the chance … Continue reading
