Biology teacher admits having sex with 14-year-old student

Posted: Published on December 2nd, 2014

A religious school biology teacher admitted Monday that he enticed one of his 14-year-old students into having sex with him several times, exchanged naked photos with the girl and sent her a video of him masturbating. Eric Beasley, 25, of Plantation, expects to serve 20 years in federal prison under a plea agreement with federal and state prosecutors, his lawyers said. He was arrested April 1 after Lighthouse Point police caught him having sex with the girl in his car, parked behind a strip mall with its windows partly blocked by a shirt and sun visors. The two told police they were consenting adults who met online, but soon admitted she was a ninth-grader at Zion Lutheran Christian School in Deerfield Beach and he was her teacher. Beasley, who had been teaching at the school for two years, admitted he had been having sex with the girl since around Valentine's Day. He said they also engaged in "inappropriate behavior at school during school hours" three times. FBI agents and Broward Sheriff's deputies, who joined the investigation, said they found evidence on the pair's cell phones that they had exchanged naked photographs and that Beasley texted the girl photographs of his … Continue reading

For docs, more biology info means less empathy for mental health patients

Posted: Published on December 2nd, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 1-Dec-2014 Contact: Bill Hathaway william.hathaway@yale.edu 203-432-1322 Yale University @yale Give therapists and psychiatrists information about the biology of a mental disorder, and they have less -- not more -- empathy for the patient, a new Yale study shows. The findings released Dec. 1 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, challenge the notion that biological explanations for mental illness boost compassion for the tens of millions of Americans who suffer from mental-health problems. Conventional wisdom suggests that biological explanations for psychiatric symptoms should reduce the blame patients receive for their behavior by making genes and brain cells the culprits. This, in turn, should increase feelings of compassion. In a series of studies, U.S. clinicians read descriptions of patients whose symptoms were explained using information that focused on either genetics and neurobiology or on childhood experiences and stressful life circumstances. Among other questions, the clinicians were asked how much compassion they felt for the individual, an essential element of therapy. The clinicians consistently expressed less empathy and compassion for the patient when his or her symptoms were explained using biological factors, the researchers found. "Biological explanations are like a double-edged sword," said Matthew Lebowitz, a Yale … Continue reading

Sophisticated HIV diagnostics adapted for remote areas

Posted: Published on December 2nd, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 1-Dec-2014 Contact: Margot Kern nibibpress@mail.nih.gov 301-496-3500 NIH/National Institute of Biomedical Imaging & Bioengineering Diagnosing HIV and other infectious diseases presents unique challenges in remote locations that lack electric power, refrigeration, and appropriately trained health care staff. To address these issues, researchers funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have developed a low-cost, electricity-free device capable of detecting the DNA of infectious pathogens, including HIV-1. The device uses a small scale chemical reaction, rather than electric power, to provide the heat needed to amplify and detect the DNA or RNA of pathogens present in blood samples obtained from potentially infected individuals. "This highly creative technical solution brings sophisticated molecular diagnostics to underserved populations and represents a potentially groundbreaking advance in global health care for HIV as well as tuberculosis and malaria, which remain significant health challenges in many remote areas," said Roderic Pettigrew, Ph.D., M.D., director of the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) at NIH. The work was performed by a team at the Seattle-based global health non-profit PATH, led by Paul LaBarre, senior technical officer, and is reported in the Nov. 26 issue of PLOS ONE. The core technology they developed and continue … Continue reading

Kidney organ regeneration research leaps forward

Posted: Published on December 1st, 2014

Okayama City, Japan (PRWEB UK) 2 December 2014 Researchers at Okayama University Graduate School of Medicine and Kyorin University School of Medicine have successfully generated a kidney-like structure from just a single cell. It has been predicted that the kidney will be among the last organs successfully regenerated in vitro due to its complex structure and multiple functions, states Shinji Kitamura, Hiroyuki Sakurai and Hirofumi Makino at the beginning of their latest report, before continuing to describe results suggesting a far more positive prognosis for the pace of kidney regeneration research. Despite the anatomical challenges posed by the kidney anatomy and the complexities understood from embryonic kidney development processes, the researchers have demonstrated that kidney-like structures can be generated from just a single adult kidney stem cell. In embryos, kidney development requires two types of primordial cells cells at the earliest stage of development. However by generating kidney-like structures from a single type of kidney stem cell the researchers provide evidence for differences in the organ development in adults and embryos. Kitamura, Sakurai and Makino researchers from Okayama and Kyorin Universities - took kidney stem cells from the different kidney components of microdissected adult rats and grew them in culture. … Continue reading
