Give Babies And Young Kids Less Frequent Baths To Reduce Eczema Issues

Posted: Published on November 30th, 2014

More than one in 10 children are diagnosed with eczema, a chronic skin condition that causes patches of dry, itchy and inflamed skin. Experts recommend less frequent baths and daily moisturising to keep eczema at bay. Picture: Picture: Locutis/Flickr The Wall Street Journal explains in an article that how we take care of childrens skin can cause more outbreaks: How often a baby gets a bath, what is in the baby wash and shampoo and whether the skin is properly moisturized after bathing are things that could help bring on eczema, recent studies suggest. Researchers say many babies may be getting too many baths, and two to three a week is enough. Eczema causes patches of dry, itchy, inflamed skin that usually starts in early childhood. Scientists increasingly believe that environmental factors, such as bathing, pollutants and indoor heating, can disrupt the skins ability to keep moisture in and allergens and microbes out. A weakened skin barrier the outermost layer allows outside irritants to penetrate the skin and spark an immune-system response. Other research has found that genetic variations in some eczema patients also can compromise the skin barrier. The article noted a small study that found that babies with … Continue reading

Ms Palmer’s Classroom – Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA …

Posted: Published on November 30th, 2014

In our classroom we love to celebrate our achievements - big or small. Here is a collection of moments we'd like to share! Our salmon unit is not over yet! Students continue to explore and learn new facts about salmon. We read aboriginal myths, wrote stories and drew pictures. We continued our visits to Mrs. Lidke's salmon tank and were amazed at how the salmon were changing and growing. Students have learned about different way to fish for salmon including fish farming. They will finish up the unit by completing their Salmon Lap Books. Valentine's Day was bittersweet for us all this year. We shared valentine's treats and cards. Today was the day that each student picked a stuffy (stuffed animal for those not from BC!) . Ms. Palmer collected these stuffed animals whenever she travelled. It just seemed right that they find homes with this years students. Friday February 21st will be Ms. Palmer's last day at Jarvis Traditional as she will be moving to Calgary to start a new position with the Calgary Board of Education and be closer to her family. It is hard to believe that almost five years have gone by since this classroom got … Continue reading

Longtime La Jolla resident Fiona Tudor was executive director of the ResMed Foundation and Farrell Family Foundation. Talk to anyone who knew Fiona Tudor, and one will find that she was considered the personification of grace and elegance. Ms. Tudor demonstrated those qualities and many more in leadership and behind-the-scenes roles for numerous arts and philanthropic organizations in the region. She was a very positive influence on our community for a long time, said Hugh Davies, The David C. Copley director and CEO of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. Whether it was managing foundation budgets or leading fundraising campaigns, Ms. Tudor went about her work expertly and without fanfare. She did what she did very quietly, very effectively and very lovingly, Davies said. Added Erika Torri, the Athenaeum Music & Arts Librarys Joan & Irwin Jacobs executive director: It was not all that important to her to be known for what she was involved in and all that she accomplished. As an Athenaeum board member, Ms. Tudor played a pivotal role in the cultural centers fundraising campaign to reclaim its historic buildings, Torri said. The $2 million campaign grew to $5 million, enabling the Athenaeum to reunite its … Continue reading

Research findings offer hope for treating Alzheimers

Posted: Published on November 30th, 2014

Dr. Charles P. Gennaula reviews a patients file with certified nurse practitioner Patty Zamiska in his office in Belle Vernon. Photo By:Jim McNutt/Observer-Reporter Marlene Oreski said she welcomes breakthrough research this year by Harvard stem-cell scientists, something that offers hope for treating Alzheimers disease. But it wouldnt benefit her mother. It certainly is good news, said Marlene, a retired Carroll Township schoolteacher, in response to news in March that the researchers, Tracy Young-Pearse and Christina Muratore, had created the types of neurons that are damaged by the disease from skin cells of patients with early-onset Alzheimers. Marlene said her mother, Helen Oreski, 93, was diagnosed with dementia more than a year ago, and its symptoms have worsened to the point where she now has problems with mobility and recognizing her relatives. It would be too late for her, Marlene said, speaking of any better dementia or Alzheimers medication that could come out of new research findings. The Harvard study could lead to developing improved treatment regimens for Alzheimers before those who are at risk for the disease begin to exhibit its symptoms, much like how physicians treat heart disease early with high blood pressure medication, said Eric McDade, a UPMC … Continue reading

Obokata to wrap up STAP cell reproduction bid

Posted: Published on November 30th, 2014

Discredited stem-cell biologist Haruko Obokata will end her attempts to reproduce so-called STAP cells on Sunday as scheduled, officials at the Riken research institute said. The young scientist is attempting to prove that the cells, which are purportedly capable of developing into any type of body tissue, actually exist after studies published by her team were discredited by allegations of research misconduct. She and her co-authors later retracted two research papers on stimulus-triggered acquisition of pluripotency that had been published in the British science journal Nature. The state-backed institute plans to disclose the results of her tests after compiling the data but has not decided when to release them because it is not known how long it will take to interpret the data, the officials said Friday. Obokata will organize and analyze the data under the supervision of other researchers, including the leader of a Riken team that is attempting to reproduce the fabled cells, the officials said. In August, the team said in an interim report that it had not yet succeeded. Obokata has joined the research team to conduct, with a third party present, experiments that are set to be terminated at the end of this month, regardless … Continue reading
