Celebrity chef Sunny Anderson on living with irritable bowel disease

Posted: Published on November 23rd, 2014

By Sunny Anderson I may be best known for my Food Network shows, where I whip up my favorite meals and share recipes I love on The Kitchen and Cooking for Real, but many fans may not know that Ive been living with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) for about 20 years, specifically, ulcerative colitis (UC). Now, Ive partnered with Janssen Biotech, Inc. and the Crohns & Colitis Foundation of American (CCFA) to launch Get Your Full Course, a website designed to educate patients on the paired role of diet and nutrition in managing IBD. These diseases often go unlooked, and while symptoms vary for everyone, patients commonly experience urgent bowl movements, horrible cramps and bloody stools. The site is designed to educate patients on the paired role of diet and nutrition in managing IBD, which is especially important to me because I love to cook! When I first received my UC diagnosis at age 19, I worried that having UC meant giving up who I am. Living with IBD, food is sometimes the last thing you want to think about, especially when experiencing a flare and symptoms are at their worst. While food didnt cause my IBD (nor will food … Continue reading

DHB being asked for more stroke staff

Posted: Published on November 23rd, 2014

SCOTT HAMMOND Nelson Marlborough District Health Board stroke specialist Dr Suzanne Busch and Christchurch occupational therapist Clare Jamieson spoke at the first in-house stroke training day at Blenheims Wairau Hospital. A business case is being lodged for more physiotherapists, speech therapists and occupational therapists to boost rehabilitation services within Nelson Marlborough District Health Board. Wairau Hospital geriatrician and stroke physician Andrew Wilson previously said a shortage of physiotherapists and occupational therapists hampered the hospital's ability to have an organised stroke service. The Ministry of Health say all district health boards should have an organised stroke service that comprised of a lead stroke physician, a lead stroke nurse, acute support and community rehabilitation. A briefing paper on stroke services in Nelson Marlborough District Health Board said Wairau does not have a ATR (assessment, treatment and rehabilitation) community rehabilitation team and stroke patients had limited access to outpatient community rehabilitation services after their discharge. There was no lead stroke nurse at Nelson and Wairau hospitals, and up to 50 per cent of stroke patients are discharged without physiotherapy or occupational therapy assessment and advice. Stroke physician Dr Suzanne Busch said the shortage of allied health professionals was a nationwide problem and they … Continue reading

Opening minds: the biotech company aiming to change stroke victims lives

Dr John Sinden, left, and Olav Helleb of Reneuron. Photograph: Linda Nylind for the Guardian He wants to bore ahole in your head. But dont panic, Olav Helleb is not a modern-day trepanist and it will be a top-notch surgeon, not the 49-year-old Norwegian businessman, holding the drill. Drilling holes in the skull sounds drastic. But Helleb says it is worth it; the procedure, coupled with injections of stem cells, from his British biotech company Reneuron, could help heal victims of debilitating strokes, he says. Its a routine thing but it does sound pretty scary to me, Helleb says of cranial drilling. You only do it if you think it is going to make a significant difference to the patient. You set the bar pretty high, its not an antihistamine pill. The treatment isnt pills but millions of stem cells undifferentiated cells that can be encouraged to grow into all kinds of human cells. Helleb says the cells injected into patients brains can be encouraged to regenerate neurons lost in a stroke. The field is regenerative medicine, which in a word tells you it is about regenerating cells which are missing or damaged in some way. So in a way … Continue reading

Parkinson’s Disease Symptoms, Causes, Treatment – How can …

Posted: Published on November 23rd, 2014

How can people learn to cope with Parkinson's disease? Although Parkinson's disease progresses slowly, it will eventually affect every aspect of life - from social engagements, work, to basic routines. Accepting the gradual loss of independence can be difficult. Being well informed about the disease can reduce anxiety about what lies ahead. Many support groups offer valuable information for individuals with Parkinson's disease and their families on how to cope with the disorder. Local groups can provide emotional support as well as advice on where to find experienced doctors, therapists, and related information. It is also very important to stay in close contact with health care professionals to monitor the progression of the disease and to adjust therapies to maintain the highest quality of living. Scientists currently believe that Parkinson's disease is triggered through a complex combination of genetic susceptibility and exposure to environmental factors such as toxins, illness, and trauma. Since the exact causes are not known, Parkinson's disease is at present not preventable. The severity of Parkinson's disease symptoms vary greatly from individual to individual and it is not possible to predict how quickly the disorder will progress. Parkinson's disease itself is not a fatal disease, and the … Continue reading

Hormone Replacement Therapy, HRT / ERT – Welcome to the …

Posted: Published on November 23rd, 2014

Hormone Replacement Therapy is the substitution of naturally occurring hormones in the human body with those that are manufactured. In the case of women that have had a hysterectomy we are talking about oestrogen and possibly testosterone replacement therapy. When a woman has had a hysterectomy that removes her ovaries she will no longer produce oestrogen from her ovaries although she will continue to produce small amounts of oestrogen from the adrenal glands and fatty tissues. However, this will not be enough to counteract the possible effects of oestrogen deficiency that we see begin with the onset of the menopause. If a woman has a hysterectomy that leaves her ovaries in place, she has a 50% chance of suffering ovarian failure within five years of surgery. This is not age dependent. There are many things that women need to consider when they are faced with an surgical menopause and one of the major issues is whether or not to take Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT). HRT can be beneficial in alleviating the symptoms of the menopause. Women should also consider the fact that they will be longer without the female sex hormones than their age related peers and that some of … Continue reading
