Gilbert postpones biology textbook debate

Posted: Published on November 23rd, 2014

"Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections (Seventh Edition)," has a chapter that discusses abstinence, birth-control methods, tubal ligations and vasectomies, and drugs that can induce abortion.(Photo: The Republic) The Gilbert Public Schools governing board postponed a discussion over whether an honors biology textbook should mention abortion. Superintendent Christina Kishimoto had expected to present a plan Nov. 18 for how to go about editing two pages of "Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections (Seventh Edition)," which has a chapter that discusses abstinence, birth-control methods, sterilization and drugs that can induce abortion. RELATED: Gilbert schools to edit 'abortion' section of textbook But board members questioned whether the presentation would violate the state Open Meeting Law because Kishimoto's presentation was to be part of her regular superintendent's report and not a separate item on the agenda. After calling the district's attorney, they the board instructed Kishimoto to make her presentation at a future meeting. Kishimoto has previously said that she does not believe the textbook violates a 2-year-old state law that requires public schools to "present childbirth and adoption as preferred options to elective abortion." At least one other school district Paradise Valley and one individual high school Desert Vista, in the Tempe district also … Continue reading

UW-La Crosse professor named Wis. Professor of the Year

Posted: Published on November 23rd, 2014

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) - UW-La Crosse Biology Professor Scott Cooper was named the 2014 Wisconsin Professor of the Year. The recognition comes from The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. Cooper was selected from nearly 400 top professors in the U.S. He will be honored in Washington, D.C. on Thursday. "I never would have predicted this, Cooper said. I was surprised to get nominated, then it was ten times more surprising to actually get the award. It's all been a surreal experience." Cooper has been a biology professor for nearly 20 years. Between 20-30 students partner with him in research each semester. In January 2011, Cooper took a half-time appointment as UW-Ls director of Undergraduate Research & Creativity. He is also chair of the Wisconsin System Council on Undergraduate Research and helped launch a teaching model where faculty can share assignments and lecture materials with those teaching intro biology courses. Cooper said the best part about being a scientist is the moment of discovery. "I like what I'm doing, and I don't have any plans to be doing anything different ten years from now, Cooper said. This is the … Continue reading

Supporting graduate studies

Marty Leonard is a familiar face at Dal, but a new one within the Faculty of Graduate Studies. This September Dr. Leonard, a longstanding member of the Department of Biology, took office as the Facultys new dean. I came to Dal in 1993 to join the Department of Biology, she explains. I came on what was then called a womens faculty award. I have been at Dal ever since. Dr. Leonard has been a professor and researcher in the Department of Biology since her arrival, but she also served as the Dean of Science for a year through 2008 and 2009. Many Science students might recognize her name from Introductory Biology, where she teaches a section on animal form and function. Others might know her from her third-year behavioural ecology course a favorite of many Biology students. Her research interests are primarily in animal communication and bird conservation. She shares a lab with her graduate students and husband, Andy Horn, who also teaches behavioural ecology and a popular field methods course in animal behavior. In my lab we do a mix of basic and applied conservation biology, she explains. Her graduate students work in a variety of topics, often trying … Continue reading
