Home TV Grey's Anatomy Tonight on Greys Anatomy season 11, episode 8: The POTUS comes calling Derek will once again face the decision to work for the president tonight on Greys Anatomy season 11, episode 8, Risk. On the last episode of Greys Anatomy Amelia was blindsided when a fellow recovering addict came into the hospital. She was looking for information on her parents that had been in a fire. The last thing Amelia expected was to be outed in front of everyone about her past as an addict. Derek stepped in and took over Amelias surgery. When Derek refused to talk about Amelias past, Owen called an emergency meeting. After wising up, Derek did come to her defense in the meeting and said that he cant do the job any better than Amelia. Despite this, Meredith still looked pretty pissed off at him. Dr. Herman went missing most of the episode with Arizona unable to reach her. Greys Anatomy Recap: Derek Reaches the End of His Rope And Who Gets Devastating News?

Posted: Published on November 22nd, 2014

Sarah Drew Hope was a major theme on tonight's midseason finale ofGrey's Anatomy, for better or for worse. Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Derek (Patrick Dempsey) may have given up completely on trying to repair their marriage, and Stephanie (Jerrika Hinton) and Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) found out some devastating news about Jackson (Jesse Williams) and April's (Sarah Drew) baby. On the other end of the spectrum, Dr. Herman (Geena Davis) might have more of a chance at survival than she originally thought, and Callie (Sara Ramirez) and Arizona are making progress towards a reconciliation though not necessarily a romantic one. Quiz: Grey's Anatomy plot or Florida news story? Let's recap: At the start of the episode, Meredith's caught in the middle of an argument between Derek and Maggie (Kelly McCreary) over which one of them should operate on a patient first. Maggie thinks she should, Derek thinks he should, and Meredith takes her sister's side. The awkward argument that ensues between Derek and Maggie in front of the patient and her mother and Derek's subsequent Blue Steel glare directed at Maggie is a far cry from the welcoming hug Derek gave his new half-sister-in-law a few weeks ago. Sheesh. While giving … Continue reading

Greys Anatomy season 11, episode 8 recap: Mind over matter

Posted: Published on November 22nd, 2014

Home TV Grey's Anatomy Greys Anatomy season 11, episode 8 recap: Mind over matter Tonights winter finale is a battle of heart and mind on Greys Anatomy season 11, episode 8, Risk. Before heading into a two-month hiatus, Greys Anatomy season 11, episode 8, Risk, brought in two cases that required the help of a few friends from Glee. The first, featuring Titus Makin Jr., concerns two veterans in a friendly competition to work their way up using the robotic legs in Callie and Owens research. The second is a girl, Lindsay Pearce, whose root canal results in a rapidly spreading infection that leads Derek to find a brain lesion during a CT. The cases pit surgeons against each other, and test their trust and ability to separate their hearts from their minds. Meredith and Derek are both called in to consult on Hollys infection and they instantly butt heads on which surgery is more pressing. Meredith is convinced that Derek is choosing to dig his heels in as part of his retaliation for the D.C. job and he believes she is being difficult on purpose. Pierce agrees with Meredith that the infection is the greater issue while Derek consults … Continue reading

Omaha transplant patient gets surprise from Grey's Anatomy stars

Posted: Published on November 22nd, 2014

Theres a special bond between the cast and crew of Greys Anatomy and a transplant patient at the Nebraska Medical Center. Doctor appointments are nothing new for Aspen Wiederholt from Alta, Iowa. But the subtle sound, beating loud and clear from the machines at the Nebraska Medical Center is; its the sound of Aspens new, healthy heart. Video: Young woman waiting for heart transplant gets unforgettable surprise Ive had 13 surgeries, explains Aspen, who just turned 20. She was born with a congenital heart defect. Around this time last year, doctors told Aspen theyd exhausted every option they could to help her heart to function on its own. Initially, I was in and out of the hospital five or six times from November to December, Aspen told KETV photojournalist Molly Miles. They finally did another cath and said, yeah, its time to be put on the transplant list. For the next three months, Aspen and her family waited. I didnt have any energy at all, said Aspen. I was very nervous. I couldnt eat. I was losing weight. Her mother created a Facebook page, Aspens Army, to keep everyone updated and to share Aspens story. A newspaper in Spencer, Iowa … Continue reading

New 'bubble baby' treatment means kisses for 18 kids

Posted: Published on November 21st, 2014

A new treatment for children with "bubble baby" conditions means a pair of California twins can finally have their chubby cheeks kissed. A team at the University of California Los Angeles has combined two techniques gene therapy and stem cell therapy to treat 18 children with a genetically inherited immune condition called ADA-deficient severe combined immunodeficiency or SCID. They think it may be a true cure, but will have to wait a few more years to be sure. Its made all the difference for two-year-old Evangelina Padilla-Vaccaro, who was diagnosed just weeks after she and her twin sister Annabella were born. Hearing that news, you just figure your kid is dead, said Alysia Padilla-Vaccaro. Youre supposed to be showing off your kids, not thinking youre going to be burying one, she added, wiping away tears. A bone marrow transplant can cure the condition, but Annabella wasnt a match for Evangelina. That meant isolation, because with ADA-SCID, even a common cold can kill. So there was no kissing of our babies, Padilla-Vaccaro said. You just want to bite those chubby cheeks and kiss that face and we didn't get that until they were about 18 months old, she added. The UCLA … Continue reading

Fat and Bone Marrow-Derived Stem Cells Combo Shows Promise in Preventing Transplant Rejection

Posted: Published on November 21st, 2014

Durham, NC (PRWEB) November 20, 2014 With more soldiers returning from combat suffering devastating injuries, doctors are turning to a reconstructive surgery that uses tissue transplantation along with immuno-suppression therapy. This approach has had encouraging results; however, rejection of transplanted tissue from an unmatched donor remains a critical complication. A new study found in the latest issue of STEM CELLS Translational Medicine reports that researchers may have found a way around that. We demonstrated in mice that a single infusion of adipose-derived stromal cells (ASC) which are stem cells taken from fat in a minimally invasive procedure from an unmatched donor combined with an extremely low dose of bone marrow cells resulted in stable long-term tolerance of the skin graft without undo consequences such as graft versus host disease, said Thomas Davis, Ph.D., a contractor from the Henry M. Jackson Foundation who is working at the Naval Medical Research Centers Regenerative Medicine Department. Dr. Davis is lead author of the study. He added, As we move forward, we are cautiously optimistic, appreciating that the transition from these laboratory models to proof-of-principle preclinical studies is challenging and not straightforward. If successful, the technology has diverse therapeutic applications in clinical transplantation in … Continue reading
