Weight, eating habits in Parkinson's disease

Posted: Published on November 20th, 2014

A review of the scientific literature on Parkinson's disease, conducted by SISSA research scientists, shows that even the non-motor symptoms associated with the disease can contribute to the changes in body weight seen in patients (including those subjected to deep brain stimulation). Among the factors affecting eating habits and body weight there could be, for example, an impaired ability to derive pleasure from food and changes in motivation. These are important findings which can help to understand how to reduce these effects of Parkinson's that exacerbate an already negative clinical situation. Patients affected by Parkinson's disease often show marked changes in body weight: they may gain or lose a lot of weight depending on the stage of the disease, or they may put on up to ten kilos after deep brain stimulation (a treatment to alleviate the symptoms). This situation considerably worsens the quality of life of a person who is already suffering from heavily disabling motor disorders, so it is important to understand what are the factors that cause it. "The body weight and eating habits of Parkinson's patients change as the disease progresses," explains Marilena Aiello, SISSA researcher and first author of the study published in the journal … Continue reading

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 20-Nov-2014 Contact: Federica Sgorbissa comunicazione@medialab.sissa.it 0039-040-378-7644 International School of Advanced Studies (SISSA) @sissaschool Patients affected by Parkinson's disease often show marked changes in body weight: they may gain or lose a lot of weight depending on the stage of the disease, or they may put on up to ten kilos after deep brain stimulation (a treatment to alleviate the symptoms). This situation considerably worsens the quality of life of a person who is already suffering from heavily disabling motor disorders, so it is important to understand what are the factors that cause it. "The body weight and eating habits of Parkinson's patients change as the disease progresses", explains Marilena Aiello, SISSA researcher and first author of the study published in the journal Appetite. "In our paper, we reviewed studies on Parkinson's that provided data on the association between non-motor symptoms and dietary habits and body weight. This way, we were able to evaluate some factors which, beyond the motor symptoms and drug treatments, might play a role in this problem". Depression, cognitive impairment, sensory disturbances - chiefly smell and taste -, impaired ability to feel pleasure: all these aspects contribute to incorrect eating habits. MONTPELIER, Vt. - A New York couple who said Botox treatment of their son's cerebral palsy left him with life-threatening complications and sued its manufacturer won a $6.75 million verdict from a federal jury on Thursday. The verdict, in U.S. District Court in Vermont, came three days after the announcement that New Jersey drugmaker Actavis would acquire Botox maker Allergan for $66 billion, one of the biggest acquisitions announced this year. A lawyer for New York state residents Lori and Kevin Drake said Joshua Drake, now 7, suffered calf spasms due to mild cerebral palsy until he got Botox injections to treat them at a Vermont hospital in 2012. The lawyer, Ray Chester, said Joshua has since developed epilepsy and must have an aide with him at all times in case he needs life-saving medications during a seizure. Thursday's verdict came four years after California-based Allergan agreed to pay $600 million, pleading guilty to a federal criminal charge and settling the government's civil complaint that it had improperly promoted Botox for off-label uses including juvenile cerebral palsy. The injections that damaged Joshua were given by a doctor in Vermont at the Fletcher Allen Health Care hospital, now known as the … Continue reading

Stalybridge family to hold fundraiser for brave Harry

Posted: Published on November 20th, 2014

The parents of a little boy with cerebral palsy have organised a fun day to help pay for the physiotherapy he will need after a life-changing operation. The event, in aid of three-year-old Harry McMylor from Stalybridge, will be held at Oxford Park Sports Hall, Pottinger Street in Ashton on Sunday, November 30, between 1.30pm and 5pm. Attractions at the free fun day include craft stalls, face painting, a bouncy castle and an appearance from Frozens Elsa. Harrys sister, Amy, four, and around 20 other children will also take part in a sponsored bounce on the inflatable castle on the day. The bounce-athon has gained 500 in sponsorship already, while Harrys nursery, Little Angels in Stalybridge, has also held a pyjama day to raise funds. Harry is one of just 120 children a year to be offered the operation called a selective dorsal rhizotomy on the NHS. But although the operation is being funded, the family need to raise 20k to pay for physiotherapy and specialist equipment needed to aid his recovery. The life-changing procedure should allow him to walk unaided, but his mum, Charlene and dad, David must raise 20,000 to fund two years of intensive physiotherapy after his … Continue reading

SA tested MS drug approved by FDA

NEWS FDA reverses its denial of approval on lemtrada, opening the door for many MS patients Posted YESTERDAY, 7:04 PM Updated YESTERDAY, 7:04 PM SAN ANTONIO - One year after denying approval and shocking the multiple sclerosis medical community, the Food and Drug Administration has reconsidered the fate of Lemtrada, a three-year MS treatment infusion that was first tested in San Antonio and proven effective. The Neurology Center of San Antonio offered the first clinical trial in the country 12 years ago, and spearheaded efforts for full approval by the FDA. In 2013, approval denied in large part because test subjects had not been given placebo medication, a practice that MS doctors say would have been cruel with the knowledge that refusing a patient the effective drug would have resulted in MS relapses in which they perhaps would not have recovered. Dr. Ann Bass, the MS specialist at the center, explained what happens next. "The actual drug will be made available Dec. 5, so the paperwork goes in and the drug becomes available right away." Her Patient One, Cheryl Gallagher, will start treatment immediately. Gallagher has had MS for 18 years and lost sight in one eye. Other drugs no … Continue reading

HIV advocates: Some MS patients forgoing treatment for lack of transportation

Posted: Published on November 20th, 2014

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) - Health advocates say they're seeing more people diagnosed as HIV positive having to forgo treatment because they can't afford a ride to the doctor. On Wednesday, some South Mississippi community members gathered in Gulfport to talk about how to stop the spread of HIV and about the plight of those in our community already living with the virus. AIDS and HIV advocates said within the six southernmost counties, the Coastal Family Health Center in Biloxi is the only place uninsured HIV patients can go to receive treatment. For patients who live farther away, the South Mississippi Aids Task Force tries to help with transportation, but the organization doesn't always have money to do that. "It creates frustration on the part of us as an organization, because we want to make sure that everybody who is identified as HIV positive gets the care that they need," said Theresa Youngblood, South Mississippi AIDS Task Force Director. "But also, frustration on the part of that individual because the statistics indicate they're less likely to get treatment as is. Then you have all the obstacles of being able to get there, and very few people are getting the service that … Continue reading

Springs School students Colin and Katalina Rodriguez lost their mother, Darcy Rodriguez, in the blink of an eye.Ms. Rodriguez learned in September that she had terminal lung cancer, a diagnosis that came too late for treatment. She quickly arranged for a childhood friend to take care of her son and daughter after her death, which came on October 30. Colin, 13, and Katalina, 11, now live with Ms. Rodriguezs friend Carla Gagliotti, who promised shed take care of the twosome as best as she could. With two children of her own, 16-year-old Catherine and 22-year-old Alec, and a few rescue dogs, Ms. Gagliotti was afraid she wouldnt be able to fulfill her promise. But with help from the community, she is now more hopeful. Amagansett resident Allison Lupo put together a quick fundraiser on November 1 at the website gofundme.com, where, as of Monday, she had raised nearly $12,000 to help feed, clothe and provide for the family. Her original goal was $5,000. Ms. Lupo, who used to babysit Ms. Rodriguez growing up in Amagansett, said she felt she had to do something when she found out that Colin and Katalina were without their mother. It was shocking, because no … Continue reading

Healthy or harmful? The truth about soy

Posted: Published on November 20th, 2014

Soy a protein made from the soybean plant - has gained a lot of attention in the food and health industry as a nutritiously edible bean with numerous uses. It is rich in omega-3 fats, B-vitamins, zinc, iron, polyunsaturated fat, fiber, phytochemicals and antioxidants. Most popular within the vegetarian community, soy protein is a replacement for animal protein - one cup contains 23 grams of protein (about half the daily requirement). Soy is found in popular foods including tofu, edamame, tempeh and soy milk. Soy contains isoflavones, which are changed in the body to phytoestrogens. Phytoestrogens are similar to the hormone estrogen. Women often use soy as a hormone replacement therapy to relieve menopause-related symptoms. It has also been linked to the prevention and control heart disease and cancer. However, the effects of soy are controversial. Human cells, including cancer cells, have protein receptors that are extremely particular about the molecules they bind to. The fit between the two determines how that cell is going to behave - they will either trigger a cells activity or block it. Soy can do both. Because human estrogen and soy-derived phytoestrogen are so similar, human cells cannot distinguish between the two. Some believe … Continue reading
