Woman with rare terminal illness gets heartbreaking news about the cure

Posted: Published on November 19th, 2014

CTV Ottawa Published Wednesday, November 19, 2014 5:50PM EST Last Updated Wednesday, November 19, 2014 6:41PM EST Stephanie Headley thought she was getting her life back. The 48-year-old mother of four has systemic scleroderma a rare, incurable auto-immune disease that is slowly scarring her internal organs. It is fatal, but there is a cure - a very expensive stem cell therapy offered in Chicago. Headley couldnt afford it on her own, but in July of 2014 an anonymous donor heard of her plight and gave her $128,000 to cover the costs. Headley called him her angel. I just started crying, she said at the time. But the life-saving miracle was not to be. On a recent trip to Chicago for preliminary testing Headley learned her heart is already too scarred to withstand the demanding treatment. We didnt qualify, and that was that, she says. I was stunned. I was shocked, saddened. Just complete disbelief. Coming back from Chicago was a real tough, tough drive, says her father Peter Headley. It took us two weeks to get over it. Now Headley has opened up about her devastating news. And shes not giving up. She plans to use the donation to pay … Continue reading

FreshSkin Announces Low Level Light Laser Therapy (LLLT), One of the Most Advanced Non-Surgical Treatments Available …

Posted: Published on November 19th, 2014

Highland Park, IL (PRWEB) November 19, 2014 Dr. Josie Tenore and the FreshSkin team announced today that a new treatment for hair loss Low Level Light Laser Therapy has been added to their practice. Very few things are more devastating than hair loss. According to recent statistics approximately 21 million women and 35 million men in the United States suffer from hair loss. I have been practicing medicine for 30 years and I have watched many of my patients, both men and women, lose their hair. Now I can help put a smile back on their faces and regrow their hair by using a laser and not a scalpel, said Dr. Josie with FreshSkin Aesthetic Medicine Center. Lasers are widely used in medicine and now they are being used successfully to stimulate hair growth. It works because light laser therapy stimulates the hair follicles in an environment where they can thrive. The FreshSkin light laser therapy will deliver gentle, nourishing laser light that is applied directly to the scalp to increase blood flow around the hair follicles. This results in follicles that are infused with the energy needed to stimulate growth. This is not a one-time treatment. Typically we see … Continue reading

NeoStem (NBS) Stock Plummets Today on Disappointing Cardiac Stem-Cell Therapy Data

Posted: Published on November 19th, 2014

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Shares ofNeoStem (NBS) plummeted 25.52% to $5.05 in late morning trading Tuesdayafter the biotech company announced poor results from a trial of its proprietary cardiac stem-cell therapy NBS10. NBS10, which used to be called AMR-001, missed two primary endpoints in the study to test the therapy's efficacy. The stem-cell therapy comesfrom a patient's own bone marrow and is injected into patients after a heart attack. The stem cells are then supposed to help blood flow and build cardiac muscle. NeoStem's trial used non-invasive imaging to monitor blood flow through the heart six months after a one dose of NBS10 or a placebo. The study showed no difference between NBS and placebo, NeoStem said. UCLA Doctors Hail Potential Cure For Bubble Baby Syndrome

Posted: Published on November 19th, 2014

CBS Los Angeles (con't) Affordable Care Act Updates: CBSLA.com/ACA Health News & Information: CBSLA.com/Health WESTWOOD (CBSLA.com) Doctors say a groundbreaking stem cell therapy treatment out of UCLA may have cured Bubble Baby syndrome once and for all. KNX 1070s Brian Ping reports Dr. Donald Kohn has perfected a gene therapy that has now cured 18 children born without an immune system, known as ADA-deficient severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID). Only weeks after giving birth to fraternal twins in 2012, Alysia and Christian Padilla-Vaccaro found out their daughter Evangelinas immune system was so deficient that she could have no exposure to the outside world. After enrolling their daughter in Dr. Donald Kohns revolutionary stem cell gene therapy treatment which was nearly three decades in the making doctors extracted stem cells from the bone marrow in Evangelinas hip, then used a modified mouse virus to correct her faulty gene before replacing the marrow. You hear the words mouse virus and you want to run the other way, said mom Alysia. But they modify it so that its teaching it to do something that they want it to do, which is put something in there that was missing. Evangelinas new immune system developed without … Continue reading

UCLA Stem Cell Researcher Pioneers Gene Therapy Cure for Children with "Bubble Baby" Disease

Posted: Published on November 19th, 2014

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise UCLA stem cell researchers have pioneered a stem cell gene therapy cure for children born with adenosine deaminase (ADA)-deficient severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID), often called Bubble Baby disease, a life-threatening condition that if left untreated can be fatal within the first year of life. The groundbreaking treatment was developed by renowned stem cell researcher and UCLA Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research member Dr. Donald Kohn, whose breakthrough was developed over three decades of research to create a gene therapy that safely restores immune systems in children with ADA-deficient SCID using the patients own cells with no side effects. To date, 18 children with SCID have been cured of the disease after receiving the stem cell gene therapy in clinical trials at UCLA and the National Institutes of Health. All of the children with SCID that I have treated in these stem cell clinical trials would have died in a year or less without this gene therapy, instead they are all thriving with fully functioning immune systems said Kohn, a professor of pediatrics and of microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics in Life Sciences. To protect children … Continue reading

Roslyn Heights, NY (PRWEB) November 19, 2014 A shocking number of Americans have psoriasis and eczema39 million adults and childrenwhich is more than four times the population of New York City, the largest city in the US. According to dermatology specialists Dr. Joshua Fox and Dr. Robert Levine with Advanced Dermatology, PC, the seasonal change to cold, dry air creates difficulties for people dealing with these chronic skin disorders. It is important to manage symptoms, says Dr. Fox, who has served on the board of the National Psoriasis Foundation. Psoriasis and eczema can be painful. They can make everyday actions uncomfortable for adults and children, men and women, and they carry a stigma that can lead to a loss of self-esteem, depression, and other health complications. Symptoms Psoriasis appears on the skin as red or white, scaly patches that often itch and bleed. The patches can also look scaly or silvery in color. Nails can become yellow, ridged and separate from the nail bed. Up to 30 percent of people with the disease develop psoriatic arthritis, and recent studies indicate that patients with moderate to severe disease are also at increased risk for other associated health conditions, including heart disease, … Continue reading
