Kite Pharma gets positive opinion for orphan drug designation in Europe for cancer immunotherapy

Posted: Published on November 18th, 2014

Published 18 November 2014 Kite Pharma, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on developing engineered autologous T cell therapy (eACT(TM)) products for the treatment of cancer, has announced that the European Medicines Agency (EMA) Committee for Orphan Medicinal Products (COMP) has adopted a positive opinion recommending KTE-C19 for designation as an orphan medicinal product for the treatment of diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL). KTE-C19 is an anti-CD19 CAR T cell therapy that involves genetically modifying a patient's T cells to express a CAR that is designed to target CD19, a protein expressed on the cell surface of B cell lymphomas and leukemias. The COMP, a committee of the EMA, adopts an opinion on the granting of orphan drug designation, after which the opinion is submitted to the European Commission for endorsement of the opinion. Orphan drug designation by the European Commission provides regulatory and financial incentives for companies to develop and market therapies that treat a life-threatening or chronically debilitating condition affecting no more than five in 10,000 persons in the European Union (EU), and where no satisfactory treatment is available. In addition to a 10-year period of marketing exclusivity in the EU after product approval, orphan drug designation provides … Continue reading

Heart Muscle Inflammation and Swelling Peak Twice After Heart Attack

Posted: Published on November 18th, 2014

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Results of a new study challenge the current consensus in cardiology that peak myocardial edema, or heart muscle swelling, only occurs just after a myocardial infarction, or heart attack. In the study, presented as a Late-Breaking Clinical Trial at the American Heart Association (AHA) Scientific Sessions 2014 and published simultaneously in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), scientists discovered a second wave of swelling and inflammation occurs within a week of a heart attack. The researchers from Mount Sinai Heart at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares Carlos III (CNIC) in Spain believe their identification of this second wave of inflammation may advance the use of cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging to better assess initial damage caused by a heart attack. Furthermore, it may enable the design of future targeted therapies that interrupt the two inflammatory reactions to better protect a patients heart muscle. Previously, it was widely accepted that heart muscle responds in a stable and progressive way to a heart attack or blockage, with the response pattern starting right after the attack and lasting at least a week. Our study found … Continue reading

Puma Biotechnology Falls on Disappointing Neratinib Data – Analyst Blog

Posted: Published on November 18th, 2014

Puma Biotechnology, Inc. 's ( PBYI ) shares lost 9.7% immediately after the company announced the top-line results from a randomized, two-arm, phase II study (NEfERTT) on its lead candidate, neratinib. Neratinib, in combination with paclitaxel, failed to show significant improvement in progression free survival (PFS) in patients suffering from first-line HER2-positive locally recurrent or metastatic breast cancer when compared to paclitaxel plus Roche's ( RHHBY ) Herceptin. The primary endpoint of the NEfERTT study was PFS. In this study, patients were randomized to receive first-line treatment with paclitaxel plus neratinib or paclitaxel plus Herceptin. Results showed that patients treated with paclitaxel plus neratinib achieved a PFS of 16.6 months while patients receiving paclitaxel plus Herceptin achieved a PFS of 16.7 months. However, the company stated that the incidence of central nervous system metastases in the patients treated with paclitaxel-neratinib combination was reduced by 52.6% than those treated with paclitaxel plus Herceptin. Detailed data from the NEfERTT study will be available in 2015. We note that Puma Biotechnology has a licensing agreement with Pfizer ( PFE ) for neratinib. Our Take We are disappointed by the top-line results from the NEfERTT study. Neratinib being the primary candidate at Puma Biotechnology, … Continue reading

Biotechnology group ReNeuron sees its losses widen by 1 million

Posted: Published on November 18th, 2014

The Surrey-based developer of stem cell therapies has attracted investment from the likes of top fund manager Neil Woodford who has a 20 per cent stake, and is poised to move from Surrey into purpose-built laboratories in Wales early next year. Loading article content It said last year's loss was as expected at 4.13m after the previous year's 3.17m, while cash had eroded from 20.9m in March to 16.1m at September 30. ReNeuron conducted a groundbreaking patient trial for its stroke disability therapy at Glasgow's Southern General Hospital in 2012-13, conducted by a team from Glasgow University led by Professor Keith Muir. It reported that some patients regained movement in their limbs and showed "modest" improvements in condition, despite all having had their strokes between six months and five years earlier. Its success triggered a major investment into the group by biotechnology guru Sir Chris Evans, who joined the board in August last year. This year ReNeuron began a Phase 1 safety study at Ninewells Hospital in Dundee of its therapy for people with lower limb ischaemia, which can lead to limb amputation. The group yesterday cited "encouraging long term Phase 1 data" from the stroke study and said Phase … Continue reading
