Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise Esther M. Conwell, research professor of chemistry at the University of Rochester and recipient of a National Medal of Science, died in a motor vehicle accident Sunday at the age of 92. A pioneer in the field of semiconductor research that ultimately revolutionized modern computers, Conwell was recognized as one of Discover magazines Top 50 Women of Science in 2002 and awarded the National Medal of Science by President Barack Obama in 2010. Her expertise earned her the rare honor of memberships in both the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering. Esther Conwells death is a tragic loss for the world of science, as well as for the University community, said University President Joel Seligman. Professor Conwells many scientific contributions and her pioneering role as a leading woman in science made her a source of pride for our entire University of Rochester community. She was a deeply inspiring scientist for young women pursuing careers in science. Our thoughts are with her family and colleagues during this very difficult time. In addition to her own outstanding research contributions, Esther, over her career, mentored many postdoctoral fellows, graduate and undergraduate … Continue reading

Molecules app picks up where The Elements left off

Posted: Published on November 17th, 2014

The sequel to Theodore Gray's acclaimed chemistry iPad app The Elements leads you into the wonderful world of molecules. Touch Press When it comes to learning about the building blocks of our universe, Theodore Gray's The Elements for iPad is the perfect gateway. It's comprehensive, covering every known element; each of which has its own entry, including applications, detailed properties, and interactive images and videos to explore. It's sort of a must-have for any suite of educational apps, or for anyone with even the vaguest interest in science -- and now it has its very own companion app, picking up where it left off. Theodore Gray has taken The Elements and extended it with the logical next step: Molecules. The iPad app (also available as a physical book, only without all the interactive bits) is, to be fair, a little less comprehensive; after all, when you have some 118 identified chemical elements, the number of combinations is astronomical. "There is no catalog of all the molecules in the universe, and there can't be," Gray explains in the introduction to the app. "There may only be six different chess pieces, but it's out of the question to list all the ways … Continue reading

Amid controversy, Simons removed from directorship

Posted: Published on November 17th, 2014

Updated: Monday, Nov. 17 Following revelations that he was formally accused of sexual harassment in 2013, former School of Medicine cardiology chief Michael Simons MED 84 has been removed from his position as director of the Yale Cardiovascular Research Center. Simonss removal from his directorship follows his decision not to return as cardiology chief after allegations that he sexually harassed one of his researchers, Annarita di Lorenzo. Although the University-Wide Committee on Sexual Misconduct, after examining the allegations against Simons, recommended that he be permanently removed from his position at the helm of cardiology, Provost Benjamin Polak chose to suspend Simons for 18 months instead. However, he remains a tenured professor at Yale, according to School of Medicine Dean Robert Alpern. According to a Thursday night email addressed to all faculty members of the medical schools cardiology department, authored by Gary Desir who is interim chair of the Department of Internal Medicine Simonss removal is effective immediately. The email said that the removal came as the result of a prior review of his leadership. It did not mention the sexual harassment charges. However, faculty members interviewed claimed that the process of Simonss removal did not involve administrative transparency. Desirs email … Continue reading

Science scores are up for Beaver County area high schools

Posted: Published on November 17th, 2014

Local high school students are seeing more success on state standardized science tests since new assessments were introduced two years ago, a Times analysis shows. Fifteen of the 21 high schools in The Times coverage area saw an increase in the percentage of students passing standardized science tests between 2010-11 and 2013-14. Since the state introduced the biology Keystone Exam in 2011-12, only Ambridge, Beaver, Central Valley, Hopewell and Rochester high schools and Beaver Area Academic charter school saw a decline in the percentage of students passing the tests during that time. That bucks expectations and performance on math and reading tests. Theres so much emphasis on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) programs that its helping prepare students for these science tests, said Melanie Kerber, superintendent at Blackhawk School District, where the high school has seen a 26 percent increase in students passing the exams since the introduction of a new test two years ago. Without question, our emphasis on STEM has helped a great deal. A Times analysis found that a lower percentage of students are passing math and reading tests at all grade levels compared with five years ago. Thats not the case in science, where two-thirds … Continue reading
