Anatomy of a Nasdaq 100 Scan

Posted: Published on November 17th, 2014

The stock markets ability to close higher last week has improved the weekly technical outlook but the volume is still not confirming the price action. Nevertheless, the short-term momentum is positive as we enter a two-week seasonal period where stocks are generally weak. The PowerShares QQQ Trust (QQQ) is still a market leader as it is up over 18.2% YTD compared to just a 12.1% gain in the Spyder Trust (SPY). As I outlined in Fridays Week Ahead column Two Potential Stock Market Scenarios, there are two paths for the stock market that I think are the most likely for the next few weeks. Whether the market sees a sharp setback or a period of sideways consolidation, there are some stocks that are just in the process of bottoming and are likely to diverge from the overall market. Therefore, I continue to run my regular weekly scans to find those stocks that look the most promising. One of the scans focused on the Nasdaq 100 stocks as I first looked for those stocks where the OBV was above its WMA. For the Nasdaq 100, there were 58 stocks that met this criteria. This group of stocks was then analyzed further … Continue reading

IBD Support Group: Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis

Posted: Published on November 17th, 2014

The IBD Support Group offers a unique website dedicated to interaction between Crohns Disease and Ulcerative Colitis sufferers Congratulations! Youve found your way to the community created specifically for Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Digestive Health sufferers. We are a public education organization for sufferers. We launched our first website about digestive health in 1995. Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a group of inflammatory conditions of the colon and small intestine. The major types of IBD are Crohns disease and ulcerative colitis. Inflammatory Bowel Disease is not the same as Irritable Bowel Syndrome. The main difference between Crohns disease and Ulcerative colitis is the location and nature of the inflammatory changes. Crohns can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract, from mouth to anus (skip lesions), although a majority of the cases start in the terminal ileum. Ulcerative colitis, in contrast, is restricted to the colon and the rectum. Although very different diseases, Crohns disease and Ulcerative colitis may present with any of the following symptoms: abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, rectal bleeding, severe internal cramps/muscle spasms in the region of the pelvis, weight loss and various associated complaints elsewhere in the body, including the joints, eyes, skin, and liver. Diagnosis is … Continue reading

Management of ulcerative colitis – Wikipedia, the free …

Posted: Published on November 17th, 2014

Management of ulcerative colitis involves first treating the acute symptoms of the disease, then maintaining remission. Ulcerative colitis is a form of colitis, a disease of the intestine, specifically the large intestine or colon, that includes characteristic ulcers, or open sores, in the colon. The main symptom of active disease is usually diarrhea mixed with blood, of gradual onset which often leads to anaemia. Ulcerative colitis is, however, a systemic disease that affects many parts of the body outside the intestine. Standard treatment for ulcerative colitis depends on extent of involvement and disease severity. The goal is to induce remission initially with medications, followed by the administration of maintenance medications to prevent a relapse of the disease. The concept of induction of remission and maintenance of remission is very important. The medications used to induce and maintain a remission somewhat overlap, but the treatments are different. Physicians first direct treatment to inducing a remission which involves relief of symptoms and mucosal healing of the lining of the colon and then longer term treatment to maintain the remission. Anaemia, caused by both chronic blood loss from the gastrointestinal tract and reduced absorption due to the up-regulation of hepcidin should also be … Continue reading

November is National Epilepsy Awareness Month

Posted: Published on November 17th, 2014

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Epilepsy affects one out of every 100 people in the United States. Doctors say there is often confusion about the disease. Having a seizure does not automatically mean that a person has epilepsy. One out of every 26 people have seizures. People who are diagnosed with epilepsy suffer from seizures that happen often. Dr. Jessica Floyd, a neurologist at South East Neurology, says that you should see a doctor if you are having seizures. Floyd says epilepsy is a very individualized disease and you need to contact your doctor immediately to figure out if you have epilepsy, what type of epilepsy it is, and what type of seizures you are having so you can figure out what treatment works best for you.She says finding the right medicine or treatment is vital. Doctors say there are several kinds of seizures.Sometimes when a person is seizing they may be unable to communicate.Others can be more violent, showing much more obvious signs that a person is in trouble. Part of drawing awareness to epilepsy this month is knowing what to do when you see someone having a seizure. "Make sure you alert emergency services and create a safe environment … Continue reading

New hope to find a cure for Parkinson's

Posted: Published on November 17th, 2014

Lysimachos Zografos, a 32-year-old research associate, says: ''We hope to raise 100,000 to kickstart our search. Weve already developed a fast and efficient way of testing compounds by using genetically modified fruit flies. With funding in place, we can begin examining existing drugs, developed for other conditions, to see if they could be useful in the treatment of Parkinsons, a process known as repurposing. New therapies for Parkinsons, which affects about 127,000 Britons, are desperately overdue. Most sufferers of this degenerative neurological condition will be treated with Levodopa, a drug developed in the Sixties, which dampens symptoms such as tremor and muscle rigidity, but does not delay progression, and which has side effects including sickness, confusion and even compulsive behaviour. Although most cases affect the over-60s, City worker Dominic Moger, 29, was diagnosed with the condition three years ago. He explains: ''I was terrified when I developed a tremor in my left hand, and I took the diagnosis very badly. I was absolutely petrified at what the future might hold. ''I have had to adjust to gradually worsening symptoms, although thankfully no mental impairment. But the only drugs available are for symptom control, so Parkures crowdfunding effort is very good … Continue reading

Silver Spring nurse running to shine a light on father

Posted: Published on November 17th, 2014

Photo from Parkinsons Disease Foundation Katherine Lewis, a nurse in Silver Spring, ran the Atlantic City Half Marathon in New Jersey to honor her father, who has Parkinsons disease. As many physical fitness fans spend their fall weekends trotting up and down urban streets, a Silver Spring nurse is running with a deeper purpose than mere recreation. Katherine Lewis is running for her father, who has Parkinsons disease Lewis, 26, who lives in Washington, D.C., recently participated in the Atlantic City Half Marathon in Atlantic City, N.J. On Oct. 19, Lewis completed the 13.1 miles in a personal record time of 1 hour, 51 minutes, 12 seconds. I really tried to push myself on this one, said Lewis, who cracked the two-hour barrier in her third half-marathon. This athletic milestone was inspired by a resolve to help raise money for medical research of Parkinsons. According to the national Parkinsons Disease Foundation, Parkinsons, an illness that progressively degrades the nervous system, plagues more than a million people nationwide. This statistic includes Katherines father Jack Lewis, 60, who was diagnosed this past winter. It came as a pretty big shock to us, Katherine Lewis said. He was always pretty fit and healthy. … Continue reading

SUNDAY READ: David Osmond raises awareness for Multiple Sclerosis

Posted: Published on November 17th, 2014

David Osmond kicked off the opening ceremony at the Walk MS: Houston event on Sunday, Nov. 10. For David, the fundraising event for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society was part of his personal mission to bring more awareness to MS diagnosis and treatment. Both he and his father, Alan, have been diagnosed with MS. The younger Osmond recently wrote I Can Do This, a song to inspire other people living with MS. The song is available as a free download at the Our Voice in Song website. Osmond partnered with Novartis Pharmaceuticals to create the website to share diet and fitness tips and help educate people about Relapsing MS. There are four types of MS. Alan Osmond was diagnosed with Progressive MS. As the name implies, it generally progresses until the person relies on a wheelchair. With Relapsing MS, an attack may last weeks, months or years, then go away for months or years. Since he was diagnosed with Relapsing MS at age 26, Osmond has become an advocate for the MS community. If theres one thing I want people to know, Osmond said, its that there is hope, and there is community. There is support and unconditional love. Im … Continue reading
