Posted: Published on November 14th, 2014

The 1776 incubator, which is interested in helping startups break down geographic barriers and collaborating with other incubators and accelerators has announced a partnership with a major physician association the American College of Cardiology, according to a company statement. The cardiology association will play a role not only in the incubators Challenge Cup, but also longer term. The Washington, D.C.-based incubator works with early stage companies in regulated industries such as healthcare, energy and education. The move follows the incubators partnership with MedStar health system. Although it does have other physician association partnerships, it has not announced them. It underscores the interest by incubators and accelerators in connecting healthcare entrepreneurs with clinicians who can offer the kinds of valuable insights to help them sharpen their strategy and deliver technological solutions that are worthwhile and conform to parameters of health systems. The ACC will provide regional Challenge Cup winners an opportunity to pitch their companies at the associations 64th Annual Scientific Session in San Diego in an all-expense paid trip, according to the statement. ACC CEO Shal Jacobovitz said: Forward-thinking, innovative startups can play a pivotal role in developing new ideas and technologies to help stimulate advances in medicine and science. … Continue reading

University of Iowa-based cell bank a go-to source for researchers

Posted: Published on November 14th, 2014

By Vanessa Miller, The Gazette November 14, 2014 | 12:01 am IOWA CITY Crammed into the third floor and basement of the University of Iowas Biology Building East are 3,000-some antibody-producing cells called hybridomas, tens of thousands of samples of the antibodies they produce and one-of-a-kind cancer research laboratories, as well as Iowas best kept secret. Or maybe not. The UI-based Developmental Studies Hybridoma Bank (DSHB) the largest not-for-profit bank of its kind in the world has 100,000-plus customers, distributes about 68,000 samples annually, houses the only three-dimensional tumor reconstruction equipment, and has brought the university $17 million over the past eight years. This is the most famous resource the university has, said UI biology professor David Soll, who now directs the bank. But few people outside the world of research including Iowans and members of the UI community know it exists. Its the best kept secret in Iowa, Soll said. But we are growing at an incredible rate. This week, the bank is receiving about 450 characterized hybridomas increasing its salable collection by 25 to 30 percent from the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, which is off-loading due to research budget cuts. And, Soll said, the bank expects to receive … Continue reading

Scientists from the University of Aucklands Bioengineering Institute (ABI) are collaborating with the Fraunhofer Institute in Stuttgart, Germany to create human exoskeletons that will reduce workplace injury and assist stroke patients. The BIONIC JOINT is a project that will integrate the latest wearable sensor technology from the University of Auckland with mechanisms that enable movement provided by researchers at Franhofer IPA. A Memorandum of Understanding on the project will be signed today at the University of Aucklands city campus and representatives from Franhofer IPA. German Chancellor Angela Merkel is also visiting the University today. The device will sense and assist movements of the arm and could be used to help lift heavy objects or perform repetitive tasks. In this way it could help to reduce the risk of injury for people doing a lot of manual lifting. Stroke sufferers who need assistance to move in a smooth and coordinated manner could also use the device and it would improve their motion … Continue reading

Greys Anatomy Recap: The Shepherds Hit Rock Bottom

Posted: Published on November 14th, 2014

Patrick Dempsey, Caterina Scorsone We've always known Meredith Grey to be the dark and twisty one onGrey's Anatomy, but apparently she's got nothing on Amelia and Derek Shepherd. It's Amelia's (Caterina Scorsone) night to shine (or flame out) onGrey's, with her drug-fueled past putting her career in jeopardy. How does she get to this point? The episode kicks off with Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) apologizing to Maggie (Kelly McCreary) about the dinner party that never was. "We really lost track of time," she says of her and Derek's (Patrick Dempsey) absence, which translates (literally, a few scenes later) to "we were up having sex all night." Rude. Quiz:Grey's Anatomyplot or Florida news story? In another part of the hospital, Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) is indignant that Dr. Herman (Geena Davis) expects her to process in 24 hours the fact that her mentor has a fatal brain tumor. Dr. Herman tells her to suck it up. (Brain tumor or not, I still kind of hate Dr. Herman.) As a result, Arizona finds herself in the position of having to take over all of Dr. Herman's cases and also lie to the patients about why Dr. Herman is MIA. After Meredith's sex humble-brag, Callie … Continue reading
