Morgridge Scientists Find Way to ‘Keep the Lights on’ for Cell Self-Renewal

Posted: Published on November 13th, 2014

Contact Information Available for logged-in reporters only Newswise One remarkable quality of pluripotent stem cells is they are immortal in the lab, able to divide and grow indefinitely under the right conditions. It turns out this ability also may exist further down the development path, with the workhorse progenitor cells responsible for creating specific tissues. A team from the Morgridge Institute for Research regenerative biology group, led by University of Wisconsin-Madison professor and stem cell pioneer James Thomson, discovered a way to impose an immortal-like state on mouse progenitor cells responsible for producing blood and vascular tissue. By regulating a small number of genes, the cells became trapped in a self-renewing state and capable of producing functional endothelial, blood and smooth muscle cells. The finding, to be published in the December 9, 2014 issue of Stem Cell Reports, points to a potential new approach to developing cells in the lab environment for use in drug screening, therapies and as a basic research tool. The biggest takeaway for me is the ability to arrest development of these cells, says David Vereide, a Morgridge fellow in regenerative biology and lead author on the paper. Normally, these cells are ephemeral and get used … Continue reading

Posted: Published on November 13th, 2014

BIO has announcedDr. Debbie Yaver, Director, Expression Technology, Genomics and Bioinformatics at Novozymes, as the recipient of the first annual Rosalind Franklin Award for leadership in industrial biotechnology. The Rosalind Franklin Award is a newly established annual award to honor an outstanding woman in the field of industrial biotechnology and bioprocessing. Rosalind Franklins use of X-ray diffraction images led to the discovery of the double helix structure of DNA in 1953. Her work was published alongside Francis Cricks and James Watsons model of the structure of DNA. Watson and Crick are generally recognized for discovering the structure of DNA while the accomplishments of Dr. Franklin are too often overlooked. But the work of this unsung hero was a crucial contribution to one of the greatest breakthroughs in science and the cornerstone of the biotech industry, said Brent Erickson, executive vice president for BIOs Industrial & Environmental Section. BIO is pleased to honor Dr. Debbie Yaver for her accomplishments in the field of industrial biotechnology. We look forward to future advances in this field from Dr. Yaver and her contributions to the great work carried out at Novozymes. This award was created to help carry on the legacy of Rosalind Franklin … Continue reading

See more The Couples of Shondaland: 'Grey's Anatomy,' 'Private Practice,' 'Scandal' "The biggest thing in this episode is that nobody really knows the whole story. There is a lot of gossip and speculation because of the way Amelia is outed," Scorsone tells The Hollywood Reporterof the woman from Narcotics Anonymous who arrives at the hospital who interprets Amelia's story for her. Amelia's dark history will immediately throw everything into question for Grey Sloan Memorial's new head of neuro, with her fellow staffers each reacting in different ways. However, the biggest surprise will be how her brother, Derek (Patrick Dempsey), responds to the whole flap though the elder Shepherd was fully aware of Amelia's struggles. "Amelia would have expected Derek would have been the person for her to turn to and lean on in this time," Scorsone says. … Continue reading
