Skulls, skeletons and shrimp: report lists macabre medical faculty finds

Posted: Published on November 12th, 2014

When EL PAS revealed on Tuesday that a mummified corpse and two skeletons had been discovered on the roof of the anatomy department at Madrids Complutense University, college officials offered their version of events. But a report written by a lecturer about the incident paints an altogether different picture of the macabre discovery. The facts date back to October 29, when an anatomy lecturer discovered the body parts in a structure on the roof of the department. No one has yet offered a proper explanation as to how they came to be there, nor why they had been left up there for so long. The Madrid universitys Anatomy II department had already hit the headlines this year, after employees reported in May that hundreds of bodies donated to science were piling up in varying states of decay inside its basement. The door had been forced open and the parts of the lock were on a table The lecturers report on this latest incident, to which EL PAS has had access, describes a scene that sounds like something out of a horror film, and contradicts the universitys claim that the mummified body was in a desiccation area and protected from the … Continue reading

Why Miracle Drugs Exist But You Cant Have Them

Posted: Published on November 12th, 2014

It's supposedly getting easier for innovative drugs for rare diseases like Duchenne muscular dystrophy to reach the market. So why, asks Andy Extance, is hesitancy still proving devastating to desperate families? Had it begun five years earlier, Leo Le Gal's story would have followed a depressingly familiar pattern. Aged somewhere between 8 and 11, Leo would lose the ability to walk and go into a wheelchair. In his teens, he'd progressively lose the use of his arms and with them, his independence. And eventually, some time between the ages of 21 and 30, his heart and lungs would give out, causing him to suffocate. But today there is a tantalising hope. Leo's parents, Ruth and Damien, got him onto a clinical trial for a drug that promises a reprieve. It's one of three drugs that are trying a totally new approach: directly treating the genetic problem that causes his disease, Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), rather than simply treating its symptoms. Trials like Leo's have sent parents scrambling to get their sons on them and have brought the drugs to the threshold of widespread availability. Yet if he weren't already involved, the drug would probably remain out of reach for him, … Continue reading

720k funding to help improve treatment for people with epilepsy at Poole Hospital

Posted: Published on November 12th, 2014

AN innovative approach to improving the quality of life and treatment of people with epilepsy is being spearheaded by Poole Hospitals Dorset Epilepsy Service. Working as part of a consortium, the service has been awarded more than 720,000 funding from Innovate UK to introduce a new software solution which combines a patient portal, integrated digital records, social networking and data analysis tools. It employs automated sensing and geo-location technologies in smartphones and wearable technology to record and track patient-related information relevant to epileptic seizures. The aim is to reduce the costs of care and improve the treatment of a life-altering condition. Expected patient benefits include improved quality of life and management of the condition and well-being and a reduction in incidents and accidents. For many people with epilepsy the key to the best treatment is expert guidance on how to adjust medication promptly after a seizure, to reduce the likelihood of another, rather than waiting for an appointment. This project aims to provide patients with a simple and secure way to manage their condition with timely expert guidance and support. Having spent a considerable amount of time trying to get this idea airborne, I am delighted that we can launch … Continue reading

Autism spectrum disorder Definition – Diseases and …

Posted: Published on November 12th, 2014

Autism spectrum disorder is a serious neurodevelopmental disorder that impairs a child's ability to communicate and interact with others. It also includes restricted repetitive behaviors, interests and activities. These issues cause significant impairment in social, occupational and other areas of functioning. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is now defined by the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnosis and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) as a single disorder that includes disorders that were previously considered separate autism, Asperger's syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified. The term "spectrum" in autism spectrum disorder refers to the wide range of symptoms and severity. Although the term "Asperger's syndrome" is no longer in the DSM, some people still use the term, which is generally thought to be at the mild end of autism spectrum disorder. The number of children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder is rising. It's not clear whether this is due to better detection and reporting or a real increase in the number of cases, or both. While there is no cure for autism spectrum disorder, intensive, early treatment can make a big difference in the lives of many children. Mayo Clinic is a not-for-profit organization. Make a difference today. … Continue reading
