U. student reaches far beyond his disabilities while training to help others

He feels he knows exactly how to help others with disabilities. Zenger has Usher syndrome; born deaf, he wears cochlear implants. And his sight continues to deteriorate with retinitis pigmentosa. But Zenger said he believes he knows exactly how to help others with disabilities. "My experience growing up, it was normalized, he said. You lose vision, you lose hearing, so what? It's just a challenge, that's all it is." Zenger is working to become a social worker, which involves a demanding list of classes, practicums and training, learning people skills and understanding government aid. In his presentation to fellow students earlier this semester titled "Seeing Through Blindness," Zenger described one of his pet peeves: people who say, "You don't look blind." In a study published by Cell Press November 6th in Cell Stem Cell, researchers showed that transplantation of neurons derived from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) can restore motor function in a rat model of Parkinson's disease, paving the way for the use of cell replacement therapy in human clinical trials. "Our study represents an important milestone in the preclinical assessment of hESC-derived dopamine neurons and provides essential support for their usefulness in treating Parkinson's disease," says senior study author Malin Parmar of Lund University. Parkinson's disease is caused, in part, by the death of neurons that release a brain chemical called dopamine, leading to the progressive loss of control over dexterity and the speed of movement. Currently available drug and surgical treatment options can lose effectiveness over time and cause serious side effects such as involuntary movements and psychiatric problems. UAB Researcher Has Key Role in Massive Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma Study

In 2001, Christine Skibola, Ph.D., now a professor of epidemiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health, joined forces with a small group seeking a large goal discovery of genetic and environmental links to the white blood cell tumors that collectively are called lymphomas. This has now resulted in the largest epidemiology and genetic studies of non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) ever conducted. Thus far, these studies have culminated into four genetics papers published in Nature Genetics, American Journal of Human Genetics and Nature Communications, and an entire monograph in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute Monographs comprising 13 papers on environmental and medical risk factors found to be associated with various lymphoma subtypes. More papers are on the way. This sort of research is huge in scale. The hundreds of investigators involved did risk factor analysis and genome-wide association studies on more than 17,400 NHL cases and 23,000 matched controls from North America, Europe and Australia.
