Anwar should undergo DNA test to prove himself: prosecution

Posted: Published on November 4th, 2014

PUTRAJAYA, Nov 4 (Bernama) -- PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim should have undergone a DNA test to prove that the unknown profile of 'Male Y' found on Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan's rectum was not his, the Federal Court heard today. Lead prosecutor Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah said the defence never explained why Anwar's semen samples were found on Mohd Saiful's rectum. "He should be ready to do his own DNA test if the semen is not his. He can do it quietly in Australia or Europe," he submitted before a five-man bench chaired by Chief Justice Tun Arifin Zakaria, which is hearing Anwar's final appeal against a sodomy conviction and five-year jail sentence. He said Anwar could have tendered the results of his DNA test at the High Court stage as an additional defence evidence. The Court of Appeal had found Anwar, 67, guilty of having sodomised his former aide, Mohd Saiful Bukhari, 27, at Unit 11-5-1 of the Desa Damansara Condominium in Jalan Setiakasih, Bukit Damansara, between 3.10pm and 4.30pm on June 26, 2008. Anwar was charged under Section 377B of the Penal Code, which carries a jail sentence of up to 20 years and whipping, upon … Continue reading

Shafee: DNA reading perfect and pristine

Posted: Published on November 4th, 2014

The prosecutor in Anwar Ibrahim's sodomy case says the defence was playing on semantics. UPDATED PUTRAJAYA: Prosecutor Shafee Abdullah defended the findings of chemist Seah Lay Hong against the case made by Anwar Ibrahims chief counsel by telling the court that government doctors had said the DNA reading, and not the DNA samples, was perfect and pristine. Describing the defences insistence on pristine DNA samples as a play on semantics, Shafee gave the court the example of a murdered woman in Queensland, Australia. The case, R vs Butler, saw DNA being retrieved from a towel buried for 13 years and used to secure a conviction when the DNA matched. Shafee explained his choice of example by telling the court that Queenslands climate is as tropical as Malaysias Shafee also took the defence to task for failing to follow up on the claim of an alibi. None of the witnesses listed on the alibi notice was called for cross examination, he said, noting that alleged sodomy victim Saiful Bukhari Azlan was cross examined on his alibi. The defence cannot simply abandon the defence of alibi, he said. Once you have opened the umbrella, you must use it irrespective of rain or … Continue reading

DNA IDs West Reading home invasion suspect nearly a decade later

Posted: Published on November 4th, 2014

WEST READING, Pa. - DNA evidence has helped police identify a suspect nearly a decade after a violent home invasion. Edwardo Santiago, also known as Eduardo, is now facing charges that include robbery, simple assault, theft, conspiracy, receiving stolen property and related charges. "Someone was standing there and they maced me and all I could see was a big figure," said Frederick Korper, who spoke only to 69 News following the break in the case. Korper, 78, survived the violent home invasion nearly nine years ago. "I kept thinking about it every time I heard the word DNA," said Korper, who now lives in Reading. Santiago, 44, of Reading, is locked up in the Berks County Jail. According to police, Korper received a knock on his door in the 500 block of Franklin Street in West Reading in November 2005. Korper said when he asked who it was he was told, "It's the police." A woman burst inside and sprayed mace in Korper's eyes. He fought her off and managed to pull her to the ground and pulled out some of her hair. "She kept macing me, and she said, 'Let go of my hair or I'm going to keep … Continue reading

Science is Serendipitous: Green Chemistry

Posted: Published on November 4th, 2014

If youve attended any institute of higher education, youve probably taken a chemistry class once in your life. So you know that when you start a chemistry lab class, the first thing you go over is the safety rules, and how to handle the harsh chemicals used. Before you start each lab, you also go over what kind of reactants youre going to use, and how dangerous they could be. But we shouldnt waste dangerous chemicals. What if I told you there was a whole field of science trying to reduce the interaction with harmful chemicals and do the same experiments with friendly and safe chemicals? The field is called green chemistry, and Im hoping it can clean up the way we conduct chemical research and engineering. When I get into my research work, I want to make sure Im using chemicals that are safe, sustainable, and get my product with minimal cost and time. Green chemistry is a sustainability and safety concept for the world of physical and natural science. You take a given experimental method and try to reduce the use of hazardous and unsustainable material. Experiments that we do in the classroom labs have already taken great … Continue reading

How do I become a chocolate taster

Posted: Published on November 4th, 2014

Chocolate is surprisingly hard to work with, says Cat Channon, because youre using a blend of fat as well as cocoa. Photograph: Alamy Cat Channon has never forgotten her first taste of Cadburys chocolate. I must have been two years old. Cadburys Buttons were Mums little treat and she gave some to me. I have a strong memory of sitting with her, savouring each and every one. Little did she know the experience would mark the start of her career as a master chocolate taster, product developer and laboratory scientist for Mondelez (formerly Kraft Foods), which now manufactures Cadburys chocolate. I studied chemistry at Warwick University and started looking for lab work when I graduated. I leapt at the opportunity to work here. I was 22 years old, and so keen in the interview I told them they could pay me in chocolate! Instead, she was offered 7.50 an hour to work in the Bourneville factory analytical lab, testing caramel. Most of the tests involve heating it up. So you sit in this room that smells nicely of warm caramel, and you have to make sure its not runnier or thicker than the specifications, and that it doesnt have an … Continue reading

The New York Times Reveals Widespread Allegations Of Harassment Against Women At Yale Medical School

Posted: Published on November 4th, 2014

A New York Times article this weekend documents a disturbing case of sexual harassment at the Yale School of Medicine the university's medical school that has led to claims that Yale "is insensitive to instances of harassment against women." Former Yale School of Medicine head of cardiology Michael Simons "professed his love to a young Italian researcher at the school," giving her a handwritten love letter in "effortful Italian," The Times' Tamar Lewin writes. Additionally, Simons "sought to intervene in her relationship with a fellow cardiologist under his supervision" now her husband and allegedly impeded him professionally within the department. According to The Times, the researcher Annarita Di Lorenzo and her then-boyfriend Frank Giordano were forced to file formal complaints with Yale's University-Wide Committee on Sexual Misconduct after they were unable to get help through the medical school. The committee found that Simons "had sexually harassed and created a hostile work environment" for Di Lorenzo and "had exercised improper leadership and compromised decision-making" towards Giordano, The Times reports. The committee then recommended that Simons be permanently removed from his position as head of cardiology a ban that Yale University provost Ben Polak reduced to 18 months. However, The Times reports, … Continue reading
