Report: Performance measures should include patient actions

Posted: Published on November 4th, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 3-Nov-2014 Contact: Rachel Cagan rcagan@acc.org 202-375-6395 American College of Cardiology @ACCinTouch WASHINGTON (Nov. 3, 2014) The actions or inaction of patients should be considered in programs designed to improve care and patient outcomes, according to a report released today by the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association, American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, American Academy of Family Physicians and the American Nurses Association in collaboration with other professional organizations. The work of doctors and other clinicians is often evaluated based on "performance measures," specific measurable steps that should be taken or avoided in treating patients for specific conditions. For instance, whether aspirin is given within the first 24 hours of a patient arriving at a hospital having a heart attack is an important performance measure. Incorporating both clinicians and patients into shared-accountability performance measures may be an important way to improve patient-centered outcomes, morbidity, and mortality, according to the report, "The Concepts for ClinicianPatient Shared Accountability in Performance Measures," which was published online today. The report was developed in collaboration with the National Committee for Quality Assurance, the American Society of Health System Pharmacists, and the American Medical Associationconvened Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement. It … Continue reading

Synthetic biology: ‘Telomerator’ reshapes synthetic yeast chromosome into more flexible, realistic form, redefining …

Posted: Published on November 4th, 2014

NYU Langone yeast geneticists report they have developed a novel tool -- dubbed "the telomerator" -- that could redefine the limits of synthetic biology and advance how successfully living things can be engineered or constructed in the laboratory based on an organism's genetic, chemical base-pair structure. Synthetic biologists aim to use such "designer" microorganisms to produce novel medicines, nutrients, and biofuels. In a report in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences online Nov. 3, NYU Langone scientists say the telomerator should also improve study of yeast genetics, the model microorganism for human genetics, and help researchers determine how genes, as well as the chromosomes housing them, interact with each other. The research team, led by Jef Boeke, PhD, a professor and director of NYU Langone's Institute for Systems Genetics, built the telomerator to convert circular chromosomes into linear ones. Boeke says this better resembles the natural structure of more complex organisms, including humans. Comprising about 1,500 chemical base pairs linked together, the human-made piece of telomerator code can be inserted as a single unit at any position on circular DNA and almost anywhere among a chromosome's other genes, whose base pairs can number into the hundreds of thousands. … Continue reading

Auckland celebrates $15.2m success in Marsden Fund

Posted: Published on November 4th, 2014

The University of Auckland is celebrating the success of 28 of its researchers and research groups, who have won $15.2 million in the prestigious Marsden Fund round, amounting to 27.3 percent of the total awarded this year. The research supported by the fund will address a wide range of topics, from getting inside the earthquake machine, to 8000 years of hunter-gatherer adaptation, and axioms and algorithms for multi-winner elections. "The Marsden Fund supports leading-edge research and these awards reflect the breadth and depth of research at the University of Auckland", says Distinguished Professor Jane Harding, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research). "The University prides itself on the excellence of its research and we congratulate all our researchers on the calibre of their work." Twelve research groups led by investigators from the Faculty of Science have been awarded a total of $7.3 million. Amongst them Dr Anna Santure will predict the adaptive potential of small populations: a case study in the endangered hihi. Four researchers or teams from the Faculty of Arts received a total of $2.7 million, including Professor Margaret Mutu who will research What do the claimants say? Reconceptualising the treaty claims settlement process. Dr Marama Muru-Lanning from the James Henare Research … Continue reading

Engineering research attracts $2.1m new funding

Posted: Published on November 4th, 2014

A robotic device to monitor muscle development in children with cerebral palsy and research into the biomechanics of the lung are just two engineering research projects at the University of Auckland to attract Marsden Fund grants for 2014. Dr Andrew McDaid from the Department of Mechanical Engineering is developing robotic therapy that incorporates a robotic wrist that manipulates muscles as therapy for children affected by cerebral palsy. The project, which has been awarded $300,000 in Fast-Start funding, will advance intelligent robotic therapies and has the potential to postpone or even reduce the need for orthopaedic surgery for children suffering from cerebral palsy. Associate Professor Merryn Tawhai of the Universitys Auckland Bioengineering Institute and a team of international researchers have been awarded $765,000 in funding for a project which follows blood as it moves through the lungs. The team has also developed novel methods for mapping the distribution of inhaled air in the lung. Other engineering projects awarded grants from the 2014 Marsden Fund round include: Dr Heide Friedrich Civil & Environmental Engineering Uncovering the hidden secrets of rivers: the role of interlayer structures $300,000 Read more: Engineering research attracts $2.1m new funding … Continue reading
