Netherlands Kiadis gets EMA orphan drug status for ATIR to treat acute myeloid leukemia

Posted: Published on November 3rd, 2014

PBR Staff Writer Published 03 November 2014 Dutch biopharmaceutical firm Kiadis Pharma has received orphan drug designation (ODD) from the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for its T-cell immunotherapy based medicinal product ATIR to treat acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Previously, ATIR was also granted ODD by both the EMA and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the prevention of acute graft versus host disease (GvHD) following an allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. ATIR allows stem cell transplantations using partially mismatched family members as donors for patients suffering from blood cancer who do not have a standard of care matching stem cell donor available. For many patients hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is the only potentially curative option but a matching donor is available for only half of the patients in need. Kiadis Pharma chief executive officer Manfred Ruediger said: "This second Orphan Drug Designation for our lead product ATIR in the European Union represents another very important milestone in the development of our product. "This, coupled with the previously granted ODDS for ATIR by the FDA and EMA, further highlights our product's importance as a novel approach which may help provide a potentially life-saving transplant from a family member to … Continue reading

OpRegen consists of animal product-free retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells with high purity and potency that were derived from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs). Cell Cure will conduct the trial in Israel where OpRegen will be transplanted as a single dose into the subretinal space of the eye to test the safety and efficacy of the product. Patient enrollment is expected to begin in 2014 following approval of the trial by the Israel Ministry of Health. About the OpRegenClinical Trial Cell Cures Phase I/IIa clinical trial is a dose escalation safety and preliminary efficacy study of hESC-derived Retinal Pigment Epithelial (RPE) cells transplanted subretinally in patients with advanced dry-form AMD called geographic atrophy. The open-label, single center, nonrandomized trial will evaluate three different dose regimens of 50,000 to 500,000 cells. A total of 15 patients will be enrolled. The patients will be 55 years of age and older, with non-neovascular (dry-AMD) who have funduscopic findings of GA in the macula with absence of additional concomitant ocular disorders. The eye most affected by the disease will be treated with the contralateral eye being the control. Following transplantation, the patients will be followed for 12 months at specified intervals, to evaluate the … Continue reading

Public hospitals urged to hire more genetics counselors to treat rare diseases

Posted: Published on November 3rd, 2014

MANILA, Philippines An academician wants the countrys hospitals to employ genetics counselors for the effective treatment and care of patients with rare diseases. Carmencita Padilla, a member of the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) and a professor at the University of the Philippines (UP) Manila College of Medicine, said the move would address both the gaps in medical services given to such patients and the small number of geneticists in the Philippines. According to Padilla, there are only nine geneticists in the country, seven of whom are in Luzon and one each in the Visayas and Mindanao. Padilla, who spoke in a NAST forum in Manila last week, proposed that genetics counselors be included in the plantilla of secondary and tertiary hospitals nationwide to increase the number of geneticists in the country. A geneticist is a biologist specializing in the science of genes, heredity, and variation of organisms, managing and diagnosing patients with hereditary conditions or congenital deformities. We dont have enough geneticists and we dont need a geneticist in every hospital. At least, a genetics counselor can take care of counseling the patient and his family. The counselor is not limited to genetic conditions alone, Padilla said. … Continue reading
