Chemistry issues affect debuting Hapee in close win over AMA

Posted: Published on November 3rd, 2014

MANILA, Philippines Theres no denying the talent of the Hapee Fresh Fighters but their chemistry was still very much in question during their PBA D-League debut Monday. Hapee, a star-studded team led by two-time UAAP MVP Ray Parks and standout Garvo Lanete, needed to fight off AMA University, 69-61, in a game many deemed to end in a rout. This is not the real Hapee team yet, said Nigerian center Ola Adeogun. We just had few practices together so were still trying to get our chemistry. We just had three practices before this game, said Hapee coach Ronnie Magsanoc. The Fresh Fighters were on their way to a blowout in the third quarter when they led by 20, 52-32. But the Titans, spearheaded by their new recruit Philip Paniamogan, came back in the fourth quarter that pushed the Fresh Fighters to their limits. We let our guard down and if you do that you open yourself up to things like this, said Magsanoc. This was a test for us. Forward Troy Rosario led Hapee in scoring with 12 points. Parks added 11 points, six rebounds and five assists while Lanete had 10 points and 10 rebounds. Dealing with unfamiliarity, Hapee … Continue reading

Faculty describe mood of fear in cardiology department

Posted: Published on November 3rd, 2014

On the walls of the Yale School of Medicine hang the portraits of previous deans and acclaimed scholars. They have one thing in common all are male. Professor of immunobiology at the School of Medicine and chair of the Womens Faculty Forum Paula Kavathas said she thinks the portraits are telling: They reflect a school where men wield power. The allegations that have emerged about the mishandling of a sexual misconduct case involving Michael Simons, the former chief of the schools cardiology department, and researcher Annarita Di Lorenzo have spurred discussions about the working environment for women at the school. But members of the community disagree about whether the School of Medicine is a hostile work environment for women. Of 18 medical school faculty members interviewed, 11 expressed concerns about the environment, while seven said they felt the school was a completely safe place for women. Of nine faculty members in the cardiology department interviewed, five all physicians said their department was a hostile work environment in general, but especially for women. Researchers, however, defended the work environment under Simons. Five female physicians working in cardiovascular medicine some of whom said they experienced various forms of harassment at the hands … Continue reading

Ariz. school district may edit biology textbook over abortion law

Posted: Published on November 3rd, 2014

PHOENIX - A Phoenix suburb's school district may revise a high school honors biology textbook to add or remove content because of a 2-year-old state law on abortion-related instructional material. The Gilbert Unified School District board voted 3-2 Tuesday night to have district officials consider how to change the textbook and report back to the board, the Arizona Republic reported. At issue is a chapter in the textbook, "Campbell Biology: Concepts & Connections," that discusses abstinence, birth-control methods, tubal ligations and vasectomies, and drugs that can induce abortion. The 2012 Arizona law says the state has a strong interest in "promoting childbirth and adoption over elective abortion." It prohibits instructional programs and material that don't give preference to childbirth and adoption over elective abortion. No organization tracks Arizona school districts' selection or usage of textbooks, but Staci Burk, the president of the Gilbert board, said the district is likely the first to enforce the relatively new law. Chris Kotterman, a state Department of Education official, told the board in an email that the textbook didn't appear to violate the law. "In general, the mere mention of a means of medically inducing abortion does not automatically signal a lack of preference … Continue reading

The effects of poor eating habits persist even after diet is improved

Posted: Published on November 3rd, 2014

PUBLIC RELEASE DATE: 3-Nov-2014 Contact: Cody Mooneyhan cmooneyhan@faseb.org 301-634-7104 Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology @fasebopa Almost everyone knows that improving your eating habits will most likely improve your health. What most people may not know, however, is that the effects of poor eating habits persist long after dietary habits are improved. In a new report appearing in the November 2014 issue of the Journal of Leukocyte Biology, scientists use mice to show that even after successful treatment of atherosclerosis (including lowering of blood cholesterol and a change in dietary habits) the effects of an unhealthy lifestyle still affect the way the immune system functions. This change in function occurs largely because poor eating habits alter the way genes express themselves, including genes related to immunity. This change in gene expression (epigenetics) ultimately keeps the risk of cardiovascular disorders higher than it would be had there been no exposure to unhealthy foods in the first place. "I hope that this study demonstrates the importance of diet-induced changes in the epigenome and encourages further research into the interaction between dietary patterns, DNA methylation and disease," said Erik van Kampen, a researcher involved in the work from the Division of Biopharmaceutics … Continue reading

CMGH will showcase cutting-edge digestive biology research in a digital open-access format. "There is a pressing need for a premier, laboratory science-focused journal in the area of gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary and pancreatology research," said Jerrold R. Turner, MD, PhD, AGAF, editor-in-chief, Cellular and Molecular Gastroenterology and Hepatology. "CMGH will be that journal. We will showcase the most novel and cutting-edge research in the field, which is currently taking place at a rapid pace." CMGH will publish original digestive biology research that covers a broad spectrum of themes related to digestive diseases, as well as integrative research that falls between traditional disciplinary boundaries. The research will be rigorous, hypothesis-driven and mechanistically novel. Featured topics include biology, immunology, physiology, microbiology, genetics and neurobiology of gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, and pancreatic health and disease. In addition to full-length original articles, CMGH will also publish brief reports, commentaries, editorials and focused reviews. Nanotech start-up secures 750,000 in seed funding

Posted: Published on November 3rd, 2014

Neal OHara, Declan Scanlan and Graham Cross of Adama Innovations Adama Innovations Ltd was formed after Prof Graham Cross, a senior researcher in Trinitys Amber (Advanced Materials and BioEngineering Research) centre, made an important discovery in the nanotechnology area, explains company managing director Declan Scanlan. It relates to the most powerful kind of microscope there is, one so sensitive that it can literally see clusters of atoms and map surfaces at scales down to billionths of a metre across. We spun out the company and patented the discovery in May 2013. Once we had that done we needed to find funding to get it going, says Scanlan. This has come through with todays investment worth 750,000 made by a syndicate that includes Enterprise Ireland, NDRC VentureLab and Irrus Investments. This vital seed funding will begin the scale-up process, given it already has a product and customers, Scanlan says. This is the second large-scale investment the company has won in the past 12 months. It received 400,000 from the European Commissions FP7 FaBiMed project, which seeks to apply nanotech research to advanced medical devices. We are in the position that we make a product and have couple of customers who really … Continue reading
