US treatment hope for young stroke patient

Posted: Published on November 3rd, 2014

A young Melbourne woman hopes a controversial treatment in America will reverse the side effects of her stroke. Krystal Reynolds was aged just 16 and studying for her VCE exams when she suffered a major stroke. She had to learn to walk and talk again. Twelve years on, she is confident a treatment available for patients in the US could reverse her paralysis. The drug anti-inflammatory drug, called Etanercept, approved for conditions like Rheumatoid arthritis, is being injected into a patient's necks, then into the brain. "My cloudiness in my brain will clear and my walking will get better," Krystal told Seven News. While the treatment is not approved for use in Australia, brain experts say they cannot rule on its effectiveness until it has been tested through clinical trials. Neurosurgeon Professor Jeffery Rosenfeld is keeping an open mind. "It's not impossible to think that if you use an anti-inflammatory drug, like this one, that it might modify the function of the brain by dampening down inflammation," he said. In a statement, the Stroke Foundation said 'it is an interesting development in the treatment of stroke' and that it 'strongly supports the introduction of the new evidence based treatment'. Stroke prevention treatment trialled in region

Posted: Published on November 3rd, 2014

A NORTH-EAST hospital is one of 10 centres in the UK which will pioneer a new heart procedure to prevent strokes. More than 5,500 people have a stroke every year in the North-East but it is hoped that the new sieve-like Watchman device will prevent strokes and reduce the number of lives lost. Along with nine other centres, the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle will be implanting the device in patients who are suffering an irregular heartbeat - known as atrial fibrillation. It works by sealing off the small pocket-like structures in the heart where the vast majority of clots form. Known as left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) treatment, the Watchman LAAC device is not routinely available on the NHS at present. But evidence from the 10 centre trial will be used to assess its effectiveness as a treatment and its cost-effectiveness for the NHS. Teams at the Freeman will begin implanting the device today (Monday, November 3). The Watchman measures between two and three centimetres across and works by preventing blood clots in the heart being pumped through the blood vessels to the brain, causing a stroke. Once it is implanted the Watchman holds any clots in the heart and … Continue reading
