Learning about Retinitis Pigmentosa – Genome

Posted: Published on November 2nd, 2014

Learning About Retinitis Pigmentosa What is retinitis pigmentosa? Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is the name given to a group of inherited eye diseases that affect the retina (the light-sensitive part of the eye). RP causes the breakdown of photoreceptor cells (cells in the retina that detect light). Photoreceptor cells capture and process light helping us to see. As these cells breakdown and die, patients experience progressive vision loss. Top of page As the disease progresses and more rod cells breakdown, patients lose their peripheral vision (tunnel vision). Individuals with RP often experience a ring of vision loss in their periphery, but retain clear central vision. Others report the sensation of tunnel vision, as though they see the world through a straw. Many patients with retinitis pigmentosa retain a small degree of central vision throughout their life. Other forms of RP, sometimes called cone-rod dystrophy, first affect central vision. Patients first experience a loss of central vision that cannot be corrected with glasses or contact lenses. With the loss of cone cells also comes disturbances in color perception. As the disease progresses, rod cells degenerate causing night blindness and peripheral vision. Symptoms of RP are most often recognized in children, adolescents and … Continue reading

Letter: Adult stem cells can change the healthcare landscape

Posted: Published on November 2nd, 2014

Adult stem cells can change the healthcare landscape A recent Colorado political advertisement highlighting a candidates stance on stem cell research shows the issue is still at the forefront of public consciousness. Part of what makes stem cell research such a hot button issue is the number of persistent myths that propagate many of the heated emotions surrounding the topic. Much of the stem cell controversy comes from the fact many people only know of embryonic stem cells, which are generated from fertilized, frozen eggs at in-vitro fertilization centers. These are not the only type of stem cells. Other types include umbilical cord blood and adult stem cells. Umbilical cord blood is extracted from birth and preserved for the future benefit of the child. While this type of stem cell technique is safe and it is becoming commonplace to store the cells, there is currently no way to utilize these cells beyond compassionate care cases which are few and far between. However, adult stem cells are currently in clinical use today and are easily and safely harvested from the patients fat and bone marrow reserves. The adult stem cells can be utilized for a variety of treatment options, which include … Continue reading

My Eczema Care Routine March 2014 | … …

My Eczema Care Routine March2014 Woohoo I have finally updated my routine! Hope this helps! Shower/ Wake up Routine 1) First thing in the morning I like to shower. If my skin is all flaky and dry as well I find that the only way I can really get rid of the flakes/ clean it properly is to shower. As youve probably read all over the internet already, long and hot showers can dry out the skin especially for us eczema sufferers and I do find this to be the case. It feels so nice to have a long, hot shower I know but when I step out of the shower I find that I am so dry and irritated that the long, hot shower is definitely not worth it! So I keep my showers short and the water lukewarm. I know some people find it hard to give long, hot showers up especially in the winter, but I find that eventually you have to put your skin first! It is worth it! Please note, I avoid water contact with my face and neck (which are prone to eczema) as I wash these after my shower. Products used in the … Continue reading

They say that steroids didnt work for them or that theyre no good for the skin. However, every treatment comes with a risk. Even natural eczema trecaratments have risks too. When used properly, steroids are safe to use with eczema. But if not used with precaution, prepare to deal with the risks that others have been warning about. There are two types of steroids used to treat eczema. Theres topical applications like ointments and creams, and then there are injectable steroids. Topical steroids can be bought over the counter or can be prescribed by a doctor. Injectable steroids are always prescribed however. The good thing about using steroids as excema curesis that they are pretty convenient options, especially over-the-counter (OTC) preparations. You dont need to see a doctor to get hold of them. You just need to visit the nearest drugstore and look for a steroid cream or ointment sold … Continue reading
