UM-Flint Chemistry Club surprises elementary students with Halloween experiments

Posted: Published on November 1st, 2014

(10/31/14) - College students crashed an elementary school Halloween party on Friday. The Chemistry Club from UM-Flint had a few spooky tricks up their sleeves and the fifth and sixth graders at Springview Elementary were pretty impressed. STEM teacher Lindy Beckman asked the club to surprise her class with a few Halloween experiments. "We thought we needed to do something different than play bingo and pin the nose on the pumpkin," she said. The STEM program at Flushing Community Schools is in its first year. It's housed at Springview Elementary, where 56 students have been given a very special opportunity to focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Friday, the kids got to let loose and have some fun with science. "Oozey things going on, lots of chemical reactions," Beckman said. "Spooky, fun, kind of Halloween-related. We're showing how Halloween can relate to everyday things, and changing colors and things like that," said Monique Wilhelm, of the UM-Flint chemistry department. With each chemical reaction, ooh's and ahh's filled the room. The kids were seeing the experiments up close and even getting their hands on some of it. In the third and fourth grade STEM class, there was slime. See the … Continue reading

Govt ‘gutless’ on GM: ABCA

Posted: Published on November 1st, 2014

AGRICULTURAL Biotechnology Council of Australia (ABCA) chair Ken Matthews says some Australian governments are gutless when it comes to giving farmers access to genetically modified (GM) crops. The former secretary of both the agriculture and transport departments made the no-nonsense observation in a detailed outline of global and domestic attitudes on biotechnology at the National Farmers' Federation Congress in Canberra last week. Mr Matthews summed up by saying Australia suffers from not having a more objective, science-based discussion about agricultural biotechnology. Its really important that Australia has practicing farmers speak up for agricultural biotechnology because its practicing farmers that will be persuasive. The ongoing anti-GM campaign is one of the big risks facing the technologys development, he said. There is a great suspicion of science and scientists in public debate in Australia and there has been a very effective campaign by NGOs (non-government organisations) which has influenced public opinion. As a result, what worries me is that environmentally responsible farmers - who tend in many other areas to be leaders of farm opinion - can often be ambivalent about GM. The pro-GM constituency among farmers is therefore not as strong as it could be in Australia. Mr Matthews said attitudes … Continue reading

SCSU senior biology major wins $27k scholarship with her blue crab research

Posted: Published on November 1st, 2014

If Melody Jackson is not accepted to the top graduate school of her choice, the University of Hawaii, she has other excellent options. If all else fails, there is always Stanford or Harvard, said the South Carolina State University senior biology major. Jackson is a precocious young lady, a confident self-starter who is not afraid to be different. She was the only S.C. State student out of a pool of hundreds across the nation to receive the 2014 S.C. TRIO McNair Research Scholarship. The grant competition, named after Lake City native Ronald E. McNair, awards institutions of higher education funds to prepare eligible participants for doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities. The goal is to increase the attainment of Ph.D. degrees from under-represented segments of society. Jacksons research, titled Threat to the Blue Crab Population, earned her a $27,000 scholarship toward her post-undergraduate degree. There is no other little animal that is more South Carolinian than the blue crab, she said. For example, there is the Blue Crab Festival, which not only helps the economy but is also a huge part of the states ecology, Jackson said. Her research, complied using current literature about threats to … Continue reading
