Biology meets geometry: Geometry of a common cellular structure explored

Posted: Published on October 31st, 2014

Architecture imitates life, at least when it comes to those spiral ramps in multistory parking garages. Stacked and connecting parallel levels, the ramps are replications of helical structures found in a ubiquitous membrane structure in the cells of the body. Dubbed Terasaki ramps after their discoverer, they reside in an organelle called the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), a network of membranes found throughout the cell and connected to and surrounding the cell nucleus. Now, a trio of scientists, including UC Santa Barbara biological physicist Greg Huber, describe ER geometry using the language of theoretical physics. Their findings appear in print and online in the Oct. 31 issue of Physical Review Letters. "Our work hypothesizes how the particular shape of this organelle forms, based on the interactions between Terasaki ramps," said Huber, who is deputy director of UCSB's Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics. "A physicist would like to say there's a reason for the membrane's shape, that it's not just an accident. So by understanding better the physics responsible for the shape, one can start to think about other unsolved questions, including how its form relates to its function and, in the case of disease, to its dysfunction." The rough ER consists … Continue reading

Arizona School District Censors Biology Book for Mentioning Abortion (Video)

Posted: Published on October 31st, 2014

The Gilbert Public School District recently voted to remove pages from the biology textbook "Campbell Biology: Concepts and Connections" because it mentions emergency contraception, morning after pills and abortion pills. According to AZCentral.com (video below), Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) signed a state law two years ago that says in part: "[N]o school district or charter school in this state may allow any presentation during instructional time or furnish any materials to pupils as part of any instruction that does not give preference, encouragement and support to childbirth and adoption as preferred options to elective abortion." The issue began when the Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), a Christian law firm, wrote a letter to the superintendent of Gilbert Public Schools in August complaining that the biology book mentioned "emergency contraception" and "morning after pills." The ADF also opposed this scientifically correct line in the book: If a pregnancy has already occurred, the drug mifepristone, or RU486 can induce an abortion, the termination of a pregnancy in progress. The biology book said that these pills "may cause significant side effects," but the ADF referred the school district to the website AbortionPillRisks.org for "documented deaths" from abortion pills. AbortionPillRisks.org doesn't disclose its owners, … Continue reading
