Chemistry professor Joe DeSimone receives national recognition

Posted: Published on October 30th, 2014

By Emily Lowe | Published 3 hours ago UNC chemistry professor Joseph DeSimone has recently been elected to the Institute of Medicine. He is also a part of the National Academy of Engineering and the National Academy of Sciences. UNC chemistry professor Joseph DeSimone can celebrate knowing that he has achieved a feat so great, only a handful of people in the world can say the same. With his election earlier this month to the Institute of Medicine, he has joined a select group of accomplished individuals to be named to all three U.S. National Academies. He is the first professor in North Carolina to receive this esteemed honor. Prior to the Institute of Medicine, DeSimone was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2005 and the National Academy of Sciences in 2012. He said he is excited about the honor as a recognition of his research. We have been fostering whats referred to as convergent research, and it is a validation of our approach in a really significant way, he said. Convergent research is a collaboration of different approaches in order to examine and solve a problem. DeSimone works in many different fields such as chemistry, physics and … Continue reading

Is violent crime in some people’s genes?

Posted: Published on October 30th, 2014

By Alan Mozes HealthDay Reporter (HealthDay News) -- In a cutting-edge look at the biology of crime, a team of Swedish investigators has identified two specific genetic mutations that appear to be linked to a higher risk for extremely violent behavior. "Our study suggests that up to 10 percent of violent crimes might be explained by the aforementioned two genes," said study lead author Dr. Jari Tiihonen, a professor in the department of clinical neuroscience with the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. One of the mutations involves a version of gene called MAOA. This genetic mutation appears to short circuit the usual way the hormone dopamine is processed and controlled. Prior research has suggested that an excess of dopamine can promote aggressive behavior, particularly when mixed with drugs or alcohol, according to background information in the study. The other mutation involves a gene known as CDH13. This mutation seems to impede the development of normal neural connections and undermine impulse control. It has previously been linked to the onset of Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), according to the study. "[But] I think that it is important to realize that there are probably many more genes that [also] contribute to … Continue reading

Mesenchymal Stem Cells: Immunology and Therapeutic …

Posted: Published on October 29th, 2014

1. Introduction Bone marrow is a complex tissue containing hematopoietic cell progenitors and their progeny integrated within a connective-tissue network of mesenchymal-derived cells known as the stroma (1). The stroma cells, or Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), are multi-potent progenitor cells that constitute a minute proportion of the bone marrow, represented as a rare population of cells that makes up 0.001 to 0.01% of the total nucleated cells. They represent 10-fold less abundance than the haematopoietic stem cells (2), which contributes to the organization of the microenvironment supporting the differentiation of hematopoietic cells (3). MSC are present in tissues of young, as well as, adult individuals (4, 5), including the adipose tissue, umbilical cord blood, amniotic fluid and even peripheral blood (1, 6-8). MSCs were characterized over thirty years ago as fibroblast-like cells with adhesive properties in culture (9, 10). The term MSC has become the predominant term in the literature since the early 90s (11), after which their research field has grown rapidly due to the promising therapeutic potential, resulting in an increased frequency of clinical trials in the new millennium at an explosive rate. As data accumulated, there was a need to establish a consensus on the proper definition … Continue reading

Please RSVP at (949) 679-3889. The Irvine Stem Cell Treatment Center abides by investigational protocols using adult adipose derived stem cells (ADSCs) which can be deployed to improve patients quality of life for a number of chronic, degenerative and inflammatory conditions and diseases. ADSCs are taken from the patients own adipose (fat) tissue (found within a cellular mixture called stromal vascular fraction (SVF)). ADSCs are exceptionally abundant in adipose tissue. The adipose tissue is obtained from the patient during a 15 minute mini-liposuction performed under local anesthesia in the doctors office. SVF is a protein-rich solution containing mononuclear cell lines (predominantly adult autologous mesenchymal … Continue reading
